SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by Daniel Silk on Oct 22, 2009 14:17:05 GMT 1, people collect like sheep, follow the heard mentality. seen it far too much.
VERY true! Its seems a sad part of our culture that some people want to fit in with the crowd so badly that they will buy, wear & say anything to do so

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by hlarmy on Oct 22, 2009 14:20:25 GMT 1, Could pricing a print too high not end up killing the market, especially for a relatively new artist?
I've missed out on previous, more affordable slinks as was hoping future releases would give me the opportunity to pick one up at £200. Personally I would have rather seen this as an edition of 40 (still low) and at half (or 2/3 of) the price - the print would have sold out by now, there would have been far more hype and discussion about it, and demand will build for the next release. Plus it would increase the collector base - I for one very rarely buy 1 piece from an artist so if I had bought this one, I probably wouldn't have been able to resist the next . As it is, I will probably now never own a Slink.
Agreed, there would be some on the Bay, but to be honest the secondary market for this print wouldn't have been that much higher than the sales price so I wouldn't be too worried about that.
Angelo, I love your roster of artists and have always had a lot of respect for you - I don't mean to critisize, merely discuss what I consider to be quite interesting. Have another bump on me

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by Daniel Silk on Oct 22, 2009 14:21:13 GMT 1, yes very true at this low low level, but quality will win out. I've witnessed a fair few artists who've decided what their worth is and paid the price of not selling anything
True! but I think also some people buy what you might say is low level art as a sort of statement against what might be classed as establishment art.

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by jellya on Oct 22, 2009 14:22:40 GMT 1, although if an artist is left with 'no true fan base' that would imply they weren't very good to begin with
I think Slink's fan base is pretty solid and extends way beyond the forums. A very popular artist I'd say.
As has been said, if he can survive as an artist on sales from a few of that fanbase who like to 'own' the pieces then all the better.
The matter of pricing is an interesting one. I'm in favour of the prices being higher at source, reflecting market value and pricing out the flippers. Studiocromie have priced this well.
If you like his pictures there's the book which Amazon have practically given away for the last couple of years. I'd like to see another one soon.

long since passed at least to my eyes, the fans reflect the artists and very few have this view nowadays

Just because this print hasn't sold out on release, doesn't mean that it wont sell in the next few days or weeks, only time will tell. obviously if it doesn't sell then the pricing is wrong, and needs to be corrected. The same happened with the last Faile release prices were too high and got adjusted by Faile and the prints sold out in a few weeks. Of course everyone wants to see the work increase in value from the artists perspective and the collectors view point, but it has to be at a rate that is sustainable. And i totally agree, that what Studiocromie are doing has to be applauded, from the shows they create to the roster of artists and the sheer quality of the print making, long may it continue.
and BUMP for a great print!!

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by eddiedangerous on Oct 22, 2009 18:13:33 GMT 1, hello again, i have to say that i dont agree with what you say iloveartonwalls. the success of an artist is not quantified by how fast he sells out his prints. and honestly with this buy/sell flipping thing, i can see why the prices get higher from the source. it's just really annoying to see em on ebay straight away, it's not good for the artist, for the galleries and for the buyers too. so, the deal is, instead of giving 400 to the secondary market, give it straight to the artist and galleries so that they can pick edition sizes lower and you get a print if you really like it. so you dont have to find yourself selling it again after some months 'cause you bought it just because if was costing 150. mhhh hope it makes sense
no thats TOSH

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by sug on Oct 22, 2009 21:21:46 GMT 1, I would go with selling the work to collectors in small editions. I agree with that to an extent. Raising the price rapidly to try and keep up with the secondary market can in turn alienate those who helped kick start an artists career. It wasn't that long ago that Slinks prints were selling for a couple of hundred from source. It's all about finding a balance.

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by patrese on Oct 22, 2009 21:34:37 GMT 1, i would certainly have bought at around 300 euros, but the release price just isn't reasonable. 30 prints @ 300 a piece would be almost the same revenue as 20 @ 480, and i think would have been better for everyone. shame.

SLINKACHU - new print out now!, by G-Man on Oct 23, 2009 21:05:56 GMT 1, It is a real shame when artists/galleries choose to do this kind of release
I agree with others that if the edition had been larger and cheaper it would have sold out long ago and generated much more interest in Slink

I was the second highest bidder on this, which is probably worse than forgetting to bid. That said I really wanted the Josh Keyes the seller also had on ebay so I put a smaller bid on the Slink than I would have done otherwise.
I think this release is very nice and for me part of the issue is the £/€ exchange rate. If it was still 1.3 rather than almost parity some of the discussion would be closed.
I would like a bit of Slink on the wall, there are some crackers, but with so much art to chose from and limited funds I am not sure if / when I'll have some
