The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by Viva Hate on Apr 18, 2008 17:15:17 GMT 1, I like Nick's work well enough and appreciate the fact hes 'old school' and has been doing graf for years, I also own a couple pieces as well. That being said, the current market is overblown and will not sustain prices or momentum. Two months ago you couldn't get cost back for any Walker print, and could barely get cost back on a hand sprayed piece. There were prints and originals available that just sat and collected dust because very few people if any wanted to buy them. NOW all of a sudden (and with ONE auction record to site), everyone thinks he is huge and a must have. Give me a break! Also consider the strong possibility the prices on ebay are BS. You don't know if any of them are actually selling (cash changing hands) at these prices, or if people are messing with the auctions by hitting the BIN... or further, that people are running up bids to make it appear the prints are more valuable than they are. Do people really believe its rational to pay more for a Nick Walker than a Banksy?! Use your heads, and keep your cash for when the prices sort out to their true values... anyone else that feels the need to go spend huge cash on a Walker print should remember the Tusser quote โA fool and his money are soon parted.โ
good post saved me saying it.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by Va Va Voom on Apr 18, 2008 17:17:42 GMT 1, Gutted I missed out on this one, certainly aint gonna be paying ยฃ10k for it but might have to bite the bullet when it is sitting around the ยฃ4-6k mark!!!! Can't see an edition of 76 and this quality selling for much less!! Mate, regardless of what people are attempting to sell them for on ebay, 4-6k is still a ludicrous amount of money to spend on this print. Give it a couple of months until this furore dies down & see what it settles down at. It'll be far less than that, believe me.
Agree with you here James, see this more in the 2-3k bracket. Well done those that got one...to keep that is!!

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by waveydavey on Apr 18, 2008 17:24:56 GMT 1, 'life too short'. Best looking print I have seen to date. Not often does the print completely outshine the original. A photo won't do it anywhere near justice. Fantastic show.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by spirit on Apr 18, 2008 17:37:47 GMT 1, I have to say that I just don't get the life's too short print. Can someone please explain why they like it without mentioning "production values". Production is important but surely it is secondary to the art itself. For example, I don't particularly like country music - even if it is the most perfectly produced/expertly recorded country music, that won't make any difference - I still won't like it because it's country music. With this print I don't get the connection between the vandal in the boat and the butterfly - what is this connection? why has Nick put these 2 images together? what is the point??

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by sand on Apr 18, 2008 17:50:12 GMT 1, Nick states in an interview that the butterfly represents the 'fragility of life' as butterflies often only live for a week.
The dust / sparkle / glitter coming from the butterfly (I believe) shows how beautiful and magical life can be if you live life doing what you want.
The fact that the word chaos is hidden in the butterflys wings is in reference to the chaos theory - that there are no rules; do as you wish and be happy.
The butterfly could also be in reference to the butterfly effect - everything you do / don't do has an effect on the rest of your life.
'Life's too short' for you not to follow your passion.
Perhaps the vandal is rowing to his love/ or rowing away from a mundane life to now do as he pleases..it's open to interpretation.
For me the peace is magical / uplifting and inspiring.
It's also a very beautiful image.

The butterfly, like graf is short lived, lifes too short to not take every chance to make it better by doing things such as painting the streets to brighten up the world. The butterfly represents chaos which some would say is a cause of vandalism. The colour (and life) is draining from the butterfly but raining down on the vandal who will take it up and make the colour live again.
Still too tired to come up with anything better, maybe someone can add more.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by bobbyt23 on Apr 18, 2008 19:24:20 GMT 1, Hi Pud...as a big NW fan I'd be interested in your take on those who say there's not much depth to his work and at the moment he's just 'in vogue' ....my own take is he's proper old school, with some talent and some great images..and hit on a popular theme with his Vandal series - I personally think a picture doesn't have to tell a huge story or a have a great social commentary to warrant being something wonderful to look at...anyways what's your opinion dude? And of course anyone else , haters and likers, whoever really Wow, my opinion!? Wouldn't know where to start really. My opinion is that the majority of those who slate Nick don't know what they are talking about! Nick has been on the scene for years, he is an 'associte' of Banksy and his 'Ratatouille' was a little piss take based upon Banksy's 'Non slip paint' rats. The Vandal series has been, without doubt his biggest success to date, it appeals to more than just us street art lovers which I beleive is the massive governing factor in the print price increase. Nick is passionate about keeping edition numbers low as he wants all those who own a print to feel they have something a little more exclusve than say a Micallef edition of 1000. Nick also knows that the Vandal series will have to come to an end before it is flogged to death, there's lots more to this episode but I swore I would keep Depth of work! It's tongue in cheek, it's funny, it makes me smile, but it also has depth! Speaking to Nick I asked if the Vandal had jumped into the river Thames after bombing the Parliament building, was this why he wasn't stood admiring his work in the painting and hence the bowler hat on the wall, Nick told me that Big Ben was the vandals biggest job to date and he made a quick getaway, after all it's London and a new Bowler Hat wouldn't be difficult to get! The quality of his stencils are superb, the Butterfly on Metal and the Empire State were amazing! Don't get me wrong I am not into everything Nick has done, but if you could spend some time with him and see just how over excited he gets working on a new idea, explaining how he came up with it etc you couldn't help but get drawn into his magical world! I know this post is a bit scatty Carlito but that question would take hours to answer in my one finger type!! ;D It's something easier done in person with a beer in one hand!!
Great post PUD. I'm only new to Nick's work and didn't really like much of his earlier stuff but I love these vandal series.
To me I love the idea of the vandal hitting all these big targets and getting away with it. Hearing the story behind the London one makes it so much better.
I also love the contrast between the black and white buildings and the colour of the paint.
I'm gutted I caught onto these images too late to get them cheap but I am going to try and get a TMA London now.
Had a great time at the show and met lots of great forum members. Met Nick and had a quick chat with him but I was probably quite drunk by then so probably had stinky chat.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by funyoung on Apr 20, 2008 11:16:34 GMT 1, Two months ago you couldn't get cost back for any Walker print, and could barely get cost back on a hand sprayed piece. There were prints and originals available that just sat and collected dust because very few people if any wanted to buy them. NOW all of a sudden (and with ONE auction record to site), everyone thinks he is huge and a must have. Give me a break!
Is this really true? I bought the Vandal Triptych back in December. I checked Ebay first and they were selling at over cost (think around ยฃ200 mark) despite being still 'in stock' with Nick. I know this because I try to check ebay sales before buying any print these days. I don't remember seeing any go below cost (about 150). So not really big profits but not sure your statement is true.

It's not far off... I sold a couple of Walker bits a few months ago for cost or a bit less. It may bot be true for all the Walker prints, but for most it is. Ghetto Ghost for ยฃ240 the week before Bonhams anyone
