Sotheby's 10.17 Contemporary Art evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 20:05:28 GMT 1, Warhol's `Skulls' Silkscreen Sells for 4.4 Million Pounds 2008-10-17 18:54:56.100 GMT
By Scott Reyburn and Katya Kazakina Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- An Andy Warhol artwork consisting of 10 silkscreen paintings of skulls sold tonight at Sotheby's in London for a below-estimate 4.4 million pounds ($7.6 million) with fees. The 6-foot-4-inch-high Warhol, one of 10 works in the auction whose sellers had been guaranteed a minimum price by New York-based Sotheby's, was bought by New York collectors Jose and Alberto Mugrabi. The work had been estimated to fetch 5 million pounds to 7 million pounds. ``Skulls'' had been assembled in 1976 by the Zurich art dealer Thomas Ammann, who conceived the project of a complete catalog of Warhol's works. The seller of the piece had acquired it directly from Ammann, and it had never appeared at auction before, said Sotheby's. The price is a record for a Warhol skull silkscreen. The previous high was the 1.2 million pounds paid at Christie's International, London, for ``Six Skulls,'' also dated 1976, according to the saleroom result tracker Artnet. The sale represents the first major test of the art market during the worst financial crisis since the Depression. Dealers said declines in stock markets and economic growth could cut prices of contemporary art before New York auctions in November, especially if Russian buyers who have propped up sales stay away. A survey of U.K. valuers said the Damien Hirst auction last month might have marked the top of the art market. Sotheby's said before the sale that it expected to raise at least 30.6 million pounds from 64 lots. Last October, the equivalent auction at Sotheby's totaled 34.9 million pounds with fees, in line with estimates. On that occasion, 84 percent of the material sold.

I'm sure you work for the CIA - although your contacts seem too good!

Sotheby's 10.17 Contemporary Art evening sale, by pezlow on Oct 17, 2008 20:28:39 GMT 1, That queen vic was a real stunner as well. Looked superb in the flesh. The Kate's didn't sell but the condition of some of them wasn't great - one had a dirty great crease.

Sotheby's 10.17 Contemporary Art evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 20:32:24 GMT 1, Sotheby's was 25% light on their estimate so one could begin to argue the Hirst sale was the top. Though, to be fair, if that Richter painting had found a buyer most of that delta would evaporate. A so so auction comparatively imo with the work Christie's is offering for sale on Sunday night.
Christie's is looking for £40m on Sunda plus Richter and Fontana estiamte upon request so call it £50m. That sale is BY FAR the strongest collection of work for sale over the next week and i've got a link to it below. i think PdP is tomorrow though i don't follow them as closely and will probably check those results on Sunday.

If I had to guess, Christie's will have success Sunday night and probably every other sale over the next week will come in a bit light based upon the results of this sale. Interesting and pretty cool for Banksy at his age to have the Queen Vic sold in an evening sale though I get the impression he loathes this stuff anyway.

Sotheby's 10.17 Contemporary Art evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 20:38:50 GMT 1, >>> The Kate's didn't sell but the condition of some of them wasn't great - one had a dirty great crease<<<
Pez, did you see this in the flesh or was that something you heard? I'm stunned that Sotheby's would offer any print set in an evening sale that wasn't pristine. We're talking the best of the best here, that's pretty surprising to me if so as it was the only collection of prints offered in the sale. Christie's is offering a set of Warhol Mao's in their evening sale so those are the only 2 artist's that either house welcomed in that format which that alone should be a strong indication of their condition.

Yup saw them in person. There was a significant crease on the border of one and a couple of the others had smaller dints. This showed up quite significantly because they were framed in perspex. Bear in mind though that these prints were editions of 20 so it is extremely rare to offer a set of them for auction.
