Represent Show (Curated by Matt Small) , by huggybear on Nov 9, 2009 20:25:49 GMT 1, Oh well, better fes-up. Although I went along not expecting to buy anything, I couldn't resist the Case painting and one swipe of the plastic later and she's mine.
I'm not normally a fan of ultra-realism, but there's something irresistible about Case's paintings. I can't say I'm a fan of all his work, some of it is just too disturbing to hang in a family house (don't want the kids to have nightmares...) but seeing this painting in the flesh just blew me away. His technique with a can is second to none and the best of his work treads the weird/disturbing line very cleverly. One thing I did notice is that a lot of people were looking at it with their noses two inches from the glass and commenting on his amazing technical ability. Photographs just don't do it justice.
Anyway, congratulations to Matty Small for putting on this show, knowing that the normal gallery commission was going to a worthy cause made the purchase a no brainer.

I'm not sure if i mentioned it, Case came to the show himself on the day and i asked him why he has been depicting these swimmers recently. In his local German dialect he explained that Akut and him came from the very same tiny remote village and since they have been very little have been spraying walls together (hence the formation of the McClain (SP?) crew ). He said that its only after many, many years and only until very recently have they been working on 'canvas'. So he is marking this new development with painting swimmers to symbolise the fact that he is 'diving into a new period of his life'.
He also explained that the 'canvas' that he uses is the cardboard from the old spray can box's he has used (all stapled together).
Also I was told that the images he uses aren't just from some photo's ripped from the net but that he invites his favourite people in from the village and does a full make over on them and photographs them himself. Then from this image he makes his art. So from the beginning to end its all his creation. Here's an example of a previous swimmer (also originally from his village I presume).
Its when you realise the story behind the art, you can truly begin to appreciate the worth IMO.
Ok two Matt small records left. Also just a little heads up that not this Thursday but next Thursday we will be opening the gallery up for a bit of a fun event. The charity are putting on a bit of an art workshop / painting demo / end of show party. The only twist is that its going to being totally kid friendly with no booze.
Instead, food wise, there shall be everything you expect at a kids party. For those lucky first 35 folks in the door you'll get to make your own screen printed t-shirt and take it away for free. In a matter of fact, the whole event will be totally free. Just a little insight into the kind of workshops that we spend our money on with people that we help to encourage social inclusion and promote an arts 'scene' to people who may not otherwise enjoy one.
Its also a little way to say thanks to the artists taking part and everyone that was so friendly and supportive at the opening night.
So put Thursday November the 19th in your diaries 6-9pm and tell the kids and look forward to watching the creative process, possibly taking part yourself (or pushing your kid forward if you are too shy) and eating pickled onion and cheese on a stick washed down with cherry aid. Also today I Will be in the gallery from 12.00. Come and say hi. I'll be the one freezing on the floor with a laptop trying to finalise a home office mentoring application.

Represent Show (Curated by Matt Small) , by Rsyok on Nov 11, 2009 14:09:59 GMT 1, Credit to Matt he's putting the hours in for a great charity project. Congrats to the Case's new owner.
In reply to the concern's of Leonard st. gallery/crew. The new setup Blackall studios is a venue for hire not a sales gallery all the exhibitors handle transactions.

Represent Show (Curated by Matt Small) , by ginx on Nov 12, 2009 20:56:53 GMT 1, Ok just so you know this Saturday we will be open and look forward to seeing any of you taking a stroll round the manner. Matt and RYCA will be sharing duties from 12-5 fri, sat, mon and Tuesday.
I shall mostly be in Bavaria enjoying the mad mad world of king Ludwig and trying to finally get a straight answer from my lass's gran as to what exactly she and her hubby were up to, during the second world war.
