My original bought from her recent San Francisco show at Upper Playground 5024 gallery is due for delivery tomorrow via UPS.
Been waiting a while, though now that it is arriving I am shocked it has come quite so quickly - wouldnt have been surprised to have had it delivered in June frankly... but anyway, on to the point...
I got a call from UPS today, asking after the parcel and the terms of import for VAT... I told them it was an original canvas and should only have the 5% rate applied to it.
I did ponder over the chancier option of attempting to pass it off as my work originally and it was being returned - which does seem to be "an" intention from the wording on the thing, but assumed they may ask for the original shipping documents as proof of ownership - it's what I would have done! So left this as it would be a shame for it to get here only for me to misread Upper Playground wording and have it returned.
Anyway... I've had to pay an amount in VAT, which isnt a major problem in the great scheme of things, but during the call the amount payable (in cash on delivery, fingers crossed for tomorrow apparently) suddenly jumped by ยฃ11.
This ยฃ11 is a VAT handling charge... this seems like an extraordinary amount to handle a payment, cheques are about 50p, card transactions are pennies... anyone else come across this? The item was ony ever going to be sent to me in this country when it was originally dispatched, the item was probably always going to be elligible for some VAT... the amount charged for handling is apparently unconnected to the amount of VAT charged so this seems like a one-off fleecing opportunity... shouldn't it and wouldn't it be better to include this inevitable cost in the original delivery cost - even though it's only ยฃ11 and will hardly stop me from paying and receiving the item, it is precisely this that makes it feel like a last chance quick grab by UPS... any thoughts?

You're not wrong... I did a quick ring round of other competitors and found the same handling charge for around ยฃ8, ยฃ10 (ยฃ11 seems the most)... just enough to make it worthwhile for them but not enough to make it worth getting round for us...
I spoke to one of the UPS customer services about it and all she seems to do is field calls and complaints about it - quite literally every single person who they deal with about it appears to have something to say on the matter.

Lucy McL work, by spirit on May 16, 2008 0:51:57 GMT 1, I bought a couple of LA show Banksy's from a guy in the states recently and they were Fedex'd over to me on a 2 day International priority service. I asked him to write "return to sender" on the Fedex customs form and I did not get charged VAT (or the "handling" charge) on either. I was not contacted about it at all and the tubes were simply delivered. I'd recommend trying that next time.

I think the Gallery kind of inferred that in the wording on the package, but not having heard from them about it and not knowing what the wording was exactly I felt very dodgy about proceeding along those lines (if they werent in California I would have called them first to find out what they had written on it, as it was they wouldn't have been in the office till about 8pm our time - art people, huh!)...
UPS gave me an opportunity which I almost took... a little paranoia monster sprang up as I started to mouth the words and I relented... I could well imagine UPS thinking "we can get it returned to the gallery and get two lots of delivery charges out of this one!"

Little little one... "In the cold cold night" I think is the name, even though it's only 8"x8" I'm really struggling for space, something has probably gotta go for it to go up.
My Mum has her eye on it already and it hasnt even arrived yet... so it may end up on her wall! I s'pose it'll mean I visit more...

Lucy McL work, by Heavyconsumer on May 16, 2008 4:37:31 GMT 1, Congrats Benny! Very nice little piece. I need to chasee them up about shipping arrangements. This is coming straight to me in Brazil, cause I can't see how I'd smuggle a large, framed pice in a suitcase later. The problem is that here they just seem to charge 60% import tax on bloody everything, so I either have to have it sent as a valueless gift (not happy with it being glazed and on paper!) or find a loophole (which I haven't done yet), or maybe get them to insure it independantly and then send it with a value of zero on the shipping label.
Anyone got any other helpful ideas?? Please?

Lucy McL work, by mcnuts on May 16, 2008 9:49:56 GMT 1, parcelforce charges around 12 for their handling charge. I have gotten stung for 3 GBP Vat and 11 GBP handling fee. Imho the handling fee should never be allowed to exceed the amount owed in VAT

Lucy McL work, by bennyhedgehog on May 19, 2008 15:10:41 GMT 1, For what it is worth...
I had a bit of a snarl up with the customer services over this... basically along the lines of asking them what the charge was actually for and whether they could give me a breakdown of the charge, I'm a bit of a git like that, anyway...
long story to short...
one of their customer services put the phone down on me and was slightly rude, as well as giving me duff information... and they are now refunding the "deferment" charge... not sure if it is something particularly worth pursuing, but if you can be arsed in goading them to put the phone down on you, they seem to give you a refund!
Which is nice. Shame it's only ยฃ11 now!!!
