Jaybo (aka Monk) solo show at Signal , by Signal Gallery on Jul 8, 2009 13:31:20 GMT 1, Signal are pleased to announce opening of the solo show 'Headscape' by Jaybo (aka Monk) on the 16th July. To request to be put on the list for the private view or to receive a preview of the show, please email us on info@signalgallery.com
'Jaybo is one of those enigmatic creative people who seem to have had their finger on the pulse for decades. In his adopted home city of Berlin he has had a pivotal influence on style and culture in a diverse range of fields. Jaybo is a true renaissance man of our time โ pushing against the trend to conveniently package and label our most talented individuals. Moving to Berlin from his native France in the early 1980โs, he quickly made a name for himself as a graffiti writer, street actor and hip-hop musician โ indeed he was one of the first ever French rappers. In the early 1990โs, he founded the street-wear label โIrie Dailyโ and the cultural magazine โStyleโ. Both of these ventures were extremely influential on Berlinโs youth culture and fashion scene, bringing a streetwise edge at a crucial period in the cityโs history that seemed to be in tune with the social turmoil of the time. Indeed, the urban subculture has continued to be the driving force behind all Jayboโs commercial and artistic activities to this day.
In recent years Jayboโs work as an urban artist has been his main creative output. Refusing to be pigeonholed again, the style of his work varies widely. From a Mickey Mouse hand collage of a famous Hokusai wave to Baconesque head studies, his work has an unpredictable quality that is disarming. However, whether he is in lighter mode with his Disney references or he is finding his own version of the twisted psychology of a Bacon portrait, there is always a sense of purpose and confidence, which draws you into his world.
Over the past few years he has taken his street art into galleries with great success. He has shown in a number of solo and group shows in Berlin and across Germany, as well as showing at The Leonard Street Gallery in London and internationally.
His first solo show in London at Signal Gallery promises to be one of the summerโs most interesting shows. Entitled โHeadscape: Tales From The Driftersโ the show will mostly feature works in his portrait style, with new surprise elements. However, there may be further surprises and the odd Mickey Mouse hand may find itโs way into the mix'.

Jaybo (aka Monk) solo show at Signal , by jusdeep on Jul 8, 2009 21:10:24 GMT 1, The likeness is uncanny Wizz, you crack me up. I really like the work I have seen previously, but personally didn't think much to the Stolen Space pieces, hopefully his Signal show will change my opinion.

Jaybo (aka Monk) solo show at Signal , by Signal Gallery on Jul 11, 2009 11:05:55 GMT 1, There won't be any 3d pieces, but have just seen images of the paintings that he has done for the show (the actual works are arriving Monday) and it's going to be a pretty amazing show. Very confident and strong. Previews will be sent out after the weekend.
Really looking forward to hanging this show.

Jaybo (aka Monk) solo show at Signal , by hlarmy on Jul 17, 2009 11:50:33 GMT 1, Cracking show; thanks to Signal for a great night.
A true painter with a lot of talent. I'm still in two minds as to whether I prefer some of his other styles / older work but this body of work did grow on me a lot during the evening. The two larger paintings were stunning.
