BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by rosstierney on Jan 22, 2010 2:21:32 GMT 1, i can't stop thinking about the endless possibilities. banksy of all people knows how negative publicity can result in positivity so why would he out brainwash for being a pleb? obviously banksy isn't brainwash but what if banksy was his puppeteer? e-mailing him all the images with instructions etc. oh i don't know. one thing's for sure though, imagine having a brainwash on your wall. i think i've just erupted a little bit of sick.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by raiden on Jan 22, 2010 3:07:42 GMT 1, Couple other points:
Both Shep & Banksy have aided MBW in his career. ย Shep provided him with permission to buff Banksy's rat on Melrose to promote the LA show (Shep has an agreement with the shopkeeper) ย Shep also DJ'd the LA show. ย Shep said he was not responsible for the documentary, and that it was Banksy's thing. ย
Banksy supposedly recommended the people to put together the LA show for MBW.
I can confirm MBW is not a puppet of Banksy. ย The furthest you could go is "Creation" of Banksy, in the sense that William Hung is a creation of American Idol & its producers. ย So in a sense,i think this film may suggest MBW is produced by Banksy, but but that takes away from MBW... Who legitimately failed his way to the top through innuendo and a very weird modern art culture that Banksy deftly comments on.
MBW may be the living manifestation of Banksy's "I can't believe you Morons buy this shit.". Just now in film. ย ย
As for MBWs prices... I've been warning people for two years that this documentary will likely make MBW appear as the Chance Gardiner of the art world, by centering on an eccentric guy like Thierry whose passion always supeceeded his talent, and who is in some ways the starfucker become star through a self feeding hype machine, so choked in overdrive, it became impervious to substance.
Is there a danger of this being the end of the road to MBW now that the man behind the curtain is revealed?
It cuts both ways...
For one, Banksy is behind the curtain to some degree, always has been in the form of wild and totally untrue rumor that once went so far as to say they were one and the same...ย
Lots of people knew this documentary would come out some day. ย And certainly speculation fed a wild speculative market unseen before where MBW went from a lowly, unknown street artist as late as early 2008 to an artist with the biggest show of that year, who then produced the more prints than almost any artist in 2009, save for maybe Shep, and did the cover of Madonnas lowest selling album.
All while most serious art critics, and even some of the very people behind him considered him a joke.
But knowing Thierry personally, you can't help but like him. ย And what makes most sense about ย this doc is that Thierry is the perfect loveable loser because he doesn't care. ย
Where does that leave his art prices post this documentary? ย
First, as much buzz as this will generate, it will likely see only very limited theatrical release - possibly UK, LA, NY - then probably get picked up by HBO. ย Not numbers to bat an eye at in terms of publicizing MBW.
The Daniel Johnston Doc was a big buzz generator, and doubled the price of his work, only for them to settle down to a ho hum level. ย
This seems like it will be like no doc ever before because it (most likely from what I've heard and can surmise) is essentially a reality version of "Being There" set in the art world with MBW as the protagonist.
In a sense, all publicity is good publicity. ย But for those wondering about the prices of MBW prints, I say is relatively massive publicity of MBW as a loveable character who is depicted in the sense "I can't believe you morons by this shit" a good thing or a bad thing?
But what do I know. ย I could watch it after being an obsessed observer of this strange drama and find out that the biggest idiot of all was myself. ย And Rhys sits quoting my posts laughing about how I was the most mislead of them all.
I still hope to go to the Sunday preem. ย Got tickets for Wednesday. ย DM me, love to meet up.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by chief on Jan 22, 2010 3:46:59 GMT 1, banksy hit up shepard and asked if he knew of good places to paint in LA since banksy getting caught would spoil everything. shepard knew a guy who owned many properties and would oblige to let banksy paint on his properties' walls. that person turned out to be mr brainwash who eventually got footage of banksy and that's all I know really but it seems like "brainwash" has been manipulating his way into the art world using the footage as leverage. personally I think his art is shit. though I do admit the michael jackson pieces made out of records at the ron english/opera gallery show were his best work yet. looking forward to seeing the film surely

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by baileymontana on Jan 22, 2010 14:29:56 GMT 1, So far I've concluded from this thread that:
1. MBW may or may not be Banksy (probably not) 2. No one who posts here actually knows what the film is definitely going to be about, including people who have footage in the film. 3. Mr Brainwash / Banksy print prices are either going to go up or down after the film is premiered.
As I've got the day off work I thought I'd add my thoughts on the film, as someone with no inside information whatsoever:
1. It looks good. I like the idea of seeing what goes on behind the scenes with the putting up street art. I'm not a huge Ron English fan but really enjoyed his documentary. I think this has the potential to be quite self depreciating ie showing that it's just a bunch of imature adults putting up slogans and pictures on walls. The artists can't help doing it and lots people enjoy what they do....the Daily Mail can never get it's head round this.
2. THe MBW story is a hollywood film. It would have been made if Banksy didn't. Here's the pitch: Rich Kid films street artists to get in with Cool Gang who are slightly edgy (but still get permission to put up some street pieces), Rich Kid then decides he must become part of the cool gang and signs the cheques to make it happen, Cool Gang get a bit annoyed but also see the funny side. They make a film about it and everyone lives happy ever after. Cast: Banksy: Christian Bale Shepard Fairey: Daniel Craig Mr Brainwash: John Belushi (CGI reconstruction) Angelie Jolie & Brad Pitt: Play themselves buying a Banksy Canvas
Exit Through The Gift Shop 2 already scripted: Cast: Banksy: Cartrain Cartrain: Silky Silky: Steve Lazirides Soundtrack: Susan Boyle
Predictions how this thread might go once the film is shown:
1. Do you think a signed print will come with the DVD (plus a seperate thread with 40 pages of highs, lows, sales and framed pictures). 2. Someone will have a go at Silky about something. 3. Someone will be trying to sell a MBW print for more than they bought it for.
With all that, keep the speculation coming! One thing I would ask if people start posting about what's in the actual film can Silky or a moderator put SPOLIERS in the subject header. I want to see the film without knowing what's in it.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by RPM on Jan 22, 2010 16:02:30 GMT 1, with all respect.. but does anyone have any idea why this should be in UTAH!? of all places?
Because Sundance is the biggest film festival for indie and unsigned films. Kinda like Cannes but for the little guy. However, given the number of films that have been bought or hyped out of Sundance that have then gone on to become major hits, having the film premiere there is a MAJOR deal. Now if your question is why did Robert Redford start the whole Sundance thing in Utah, give this a read:

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by toxicmarys on Jan 22, 2010 22:47:09 GMT 1,
A great description, quite a few people including myself under another name in the past have tried to stress the point that Mr Brainwash (I'ts all in the name BRAIN WASH, jokes!!) is pure spinal tap, Banksy's monster created to embarrass a diseased and perverted art scene interested more in commerce than culture.
I have been waiting for Banksy to really hit hard and have believed for some time that MBW would be the tool. I stand by my quote as stated before; MBW will probably turn out to be Banksy greatest ever creation. The only thing that could ever better that revelation would be MBW turning out to be Banksy himself, although that would probably be taking it a step too far and I still would like to think my man will take it to the grave like some good version of Jack the Ripper!!
From the first moment I saw MBW on the preview night at Cans Festival sitting on a step, pork chop sideburns, comical face, silly hat, paint covered hands and video camera I questioned this mans odd presence?
The fact that his LA show was more than obviously created/helped/directed By Banksy was evident from the sheer scale and similarities to Mr B's previous shows. Making a stupid amount of money overnight, proving that you really could sell any old s**t in this "scene" with a bit of buzz and hype.
MBW continues to copy the good and downright bad in the art scenes making a mockery of us silly "morons [who] buy this s**t" The best bit though he done Madonnas artwork, I never use the word but, lol!!
Anyway I am so impressed, so so impressed:
Banksy equals genius, full stop, day dot.
Probably the best piece of conceptual art ever, as Andre 3000 would say, ever ever, ever ever!!
Roll on the Film release!! CANNOT WAIT!!
