ED TEMPLETON : DRINKING THE KOOL-AID 6 - 17 April 2010 Monday - Saturday 12 - 6pm, Thursdays 'til 8pm
For two weeks in April, Elms Lesters will be hosting DRINKING THE KOOL-AID by Ed Templeton, a non-selling exhibition presented by Emerica and Slam City Skates.
Ed Templeton (1972, Orange County, USA) is hard to define. At once professional skateboarder, owner of skateboard company ToyMachine, photographer, illustrator and painter, Edโs work merges these activities on a level and democratic field of subculture art. With origins in the skateboard and punk scenes, his work reflects the DIY aesthetic and endeavor of these cultures, which is furthered by having no formal training as an artist. Templetonโs use and mingling of multiple mediums (painting and/or writing on photographs, etc.) demonstrates his non-hierarchical approach, whilst his subject matter in turn reflects an non-judgmental perspective of his surroundings. With subject matter not only delving into his personal relationships, but also seeking the outside streets and the activities surrounding the skate culture, Templeton's images contextualise a broader vision of contemporary youth culture.
Templeton has exhibited internationally at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Museum Het Domein (Netherlands), and Kiasma Museum (Helsinki), as well as participated in the influential Beautiful Losers exhibition and feature film. There is currently a major exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Museum in Gent, Belgium.
In this show "Drinking the Kool-Aid" Templeton offers a poignant selection of his photographs from the last 15 years. BOOK SIGNING EVENT: SATURDAY 10th APRIL . 12 - 2pm
You are invited to an exclusive book signing on Saturday 10th April between 12 - 2pm where Ed Templeton will be signing copies of three books:
'DRINKING THE KOOL-AID' is a small limited edition, 'little gem of a book', personally designed by Ed Templeton and published by Morel books.
'THE SECONDS PASS' is an in depth look at Templeton's recent and ongoing series of photographs from a moving car which accompanies his current solo exhibition at the Roberts & Tilton Gallery, Culver City California, and also his mid-career survey exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Museum of Contemporary Art, Gent, Belgium. Published by: Seems books.
'DEFORMER' available both as a the regular edition and the boxed limited edition version that comes with a signed and numbered photograph by Ed Templeton. Published in 2008 this book was eleven years in the making, and compiling more than 30 years of material, Ed Templeton's 'scrapbook' of his upbringing in suburban California gives a sun-drenched glimpse of what it might have been like to be young and alive in the "suburban domestic incubator" of Orange County. Winner of the best photographic publication at the Festival FotoGrafia 2009. Published by DAMIANI

Ed Templeton - Elms Lesters - 6th April, by afroken on Mar 29, 2010 15:41:30 GMT 1, Ed Templeton is a legend. Should be a good show. And nothing for sale either, which makes a nice change.

Picked up a few postcards so if there are any Templeton fans that want one, let me know and I will post them off.

Ed Templeton - Elms Lesters - 6th April, by afroken on Apr 19, 2010 22:14:40 GMT 1, Yes, cheers Bram. Much appreciated.
I very nearly bought the piece that's on the postcard but couldn't bring myself to give it up for two years for a museum tour even though the provenance would have been amazing. So it's great to have a postcard to remind me of it. Such an incredible piece of work.

Ed Templeton - Elms Lesters - 6th April, by Bram on Apr 19, 2010 22:46:46 GMT 1, No probs, the exhibition is all encompassing in the sense that it physically surrounds you with many (I think it is around 1800+ pieces) some of which are pretty intense. There is one wall dedicated to photo's of Christianity which had a strange gravitas.
