EUROTRASH
320 N. Beverly Drive | Beverly Hills | Los Angeles | California
9th โ 27th June 2010 Immortalizing the individual in monumental proportions is what these exciting artists do best. Using the overlooked, misunderstood and mundane elements of our everyday, each artist captures our attention with their distinctive style and alternative approach. Sharing a vested interest in their individual and collective surroundings and society, they poetically express a desire for universal appreciation. Hailing from France, JR will bring his unsurpassable unique vision to Beverley Hills. Immersing himself within cultures where struggle and conflict are rife, he presents his monochromatic photographs, often over 20 feet high on unconventional exhibiting arenaโs to highlight humanist matters that are often overlooked. Cork born painter Conor Harrington goes against the grain of the fast pace of graffiti art preferring to opt for the slower process of oil painting yet never forgetting his street roots. Interested in opposing elements, illusion of power and the emotional side of masculinity, soldiers and conquerors exist within colorful abstracted landscapes. London based Antony Micallefโs energetic work both celebrates and despises contemporary society. The world portrayed by Micallef is one of contradictions as Barbie becomes the Virgin Mary adorned with a Chanel necklace and cutesy paraphernalia, Angelโs wield guns and Soldiers wear flower power printed uniforms. Portuguese artist Vhils aka Alexandre Farto is the youngest artist on Lazarides books. Working with manipulating surfaces, whether it is the brick faรงade of buildings with masonry equipment or layered fly posters that he peels away, he transforms these varying planes to reveal mystifying, striking portraits that explore a cities dimensions.

It works well for me this way, even if i can't afford all of these beauties

EuroTrash | LAzarides | Beverly Hills, by RPM on Jun 9, 2010 15:26:54 GMT 1, I must say, the folks at Laz truly know how to put on an opening! Having the Lakers game on in the corner (by the JR video installation nonetheless!) was a fantastic idea. It gave many of us the chance to enjoy 2 things we love without having to choose between them. Thanks!
As far as the show goes, there were some VERY strong pieces in my view, most especially from Micallef who I believe truly brought his A game. In fact, I would go so far as to say many of the pieces at this show were stronger than the majority of the pieces at his last L.A. solo show. My favorites were definitely "Study Of A Kiss" which was just lovely (and already sold) and "Deity-Becoming-Animal" which represented a perfect example of his style. The colors (I loved the splashes of red) and the face reminded me of what I like best in his work.
Some of the Vhils pieces were nice, most notably the etched brick installation pieces. However, I was not that impressed with some of the other images and I felt that he was just repeating himself ad nauseam with the same thing. I'm not familiar with the process of how he creates the images that appear to be in a plexi-like material, but they simply looked to me to be a transparency over a background, not unlike what Shepard Fairey does with his rubyliths (which I am also not a fan of).
As for JR and Connor Harrington, well, to be honest I was a little underwhelmed. The images of Connors work at the last Kinsey/DeForges show were much stronger to me. That being said, I did like the installation piece he did. And while I can appreciate what JR does and I do enjoy seeing it in a book, I didn't get the feeling that it would be something (a photo of a photo) I would want to hang in my house.
For the record, this should not be taken as a slam on Laz or any of the artists. Just trying to put up some honest thoughts and opinions out there. Plenty of sales were taking place, so clearly not everyone agrees with me. But I was honestly much more impressed with what Choe did in the space. That being said, I'm still very much looking forward to seeing the next 2 shows. I'm glad to be given the opportunity to see this work in person.
