Calma, by Trismanco on Sept 13, 2007 11:11:46 GMT 1,
Currently showing at the Choque Cultural gallery, Sao Paulo is a solo show by Calma a.k.a Stephan Doitschinoff
www.stephandoit.com.br
This show has been much anticipated and original canvases for sale can be viewed here - www.flickr.com/photos/choquecultural/sets/72157601772865768
Stephan Doitschinoff, aka Calma (30), was born in Sรฃo Paulo, but since 2004, he has lived and worked in Sรฃo Paulo, Bahia, London, Manchester, Madrid and Barcelona.
He didn't have a formal art training but at aged 16 began to work with scene painter called Zรฉ Carratรบ. Over three years he painted backdrops for rock festivals including bands such as Black Sabbath and Bad Religion.
After some time in Europe he came back to Brazil then forming an artist collective known as FACA with Carlos Dias, together they painted murals and produced posters and stickers that were placed on the streets of Sao Paulo.(As featured in the Graffiti Brasil book)
His iconography and symbolism uses elements of sacred art, urban art and pop culture. As the son of a protestant pastor he was actually born in a church. He likes to play with religious iconography but without eliminating the intention of these profane icons. His research doesn't shy away from secret symbols or the handwriting of pichaรงรฃo (graffiti).
Stephan compositions combine the written word with imagery reminiscent of heraldry, for example, Skulls, daggers, clouds and keys intertwining. The images become, at the same time, pop and architypes. In the illustration, Stephan expertise with images and symbology have yielded him the important Tortoise Illustration prize, in 2006, for the book "Word Gypsy", Publisher Cosac Naify.
After several expositions and important publications in Europe and the United States, Stephan presents his first individual show in Brazil, at Choque Cultural.
Calmas screenprint series will soon be available at www.choquecultural.co.uk/
Here is a preview of one of the upcoming screenprints...

Calma, by Simococo on Dec 30, 2007 19:58:17 GMT 1, I didn't originally, but I find the gold canvas work really captivating. Agree on the Blu pictures on paper. Really well executed but look too much like children's book illustrations for me. Also his work relies so much on scale outside.
There's also the cost issue
$3500 for Blu on paper
$200 for Calma

Calma, by Trismanco on Oct 30, 2008 10:26:06 GMT 1, I was pleased to contribute to this book of one of my favourite artists...
info here - www.gestalten.com/books/detail?id=ceaea7651a5e798e011a72a6c7500031
Design and artwork is beautiful.
Calma The Art of Stephan Doitschinoff
Author: Stephan Doitschinoff Editors: R. Klanten, H. Hellige Texts: Tristan Manco, Carlo McCormick Language: English
Release: September 2008 Price: โฌ 39,90 / $ 65,00 / ยฃ 35,00 Format: 24 x 28 cm Features: 160 pages, full colour, hardcover
ISBN: 978-3-89955-224-9
Stephan Doitschinoffโs street alias is Calma. This book presents the emblematic and spiritual paintings and murals that the Brazilian painter has emblazoned on houses, churches and walls in rural villages in his South American homeland. His metaphoric imagery feeds off Afro-Brazilian folklore, pagan and alchemic symbolism and contemporary pop culture. For the first time, Calma documents his artistic journey through these rustic areas and presents the complete visual pandemonium of a young urban artist who creates powerful figurative worlds.
