So you saying that you can just bowl in and ask for 10% discount ?
I thought that would only be after a while when things hadn't sold ?

When you buy something from a gallery you should always ask for a 10% discount. The dirty secret is that prices for work is usually made thinking that it will be discounted anyway, galleries kind of expect it. If the piece has sat around a long time you can probably even get a 15-20%. FYI Galleries usually discount work at least 20% if a museum is interested in buying it.
There have been instances where I wasn't able to get a 10% discount, and there have been instances where galleries gave me 10% off without even me asking! Sometimes you can get more, doesn't hurt to ask.
And especially these consignment shows where the asking price is not the artists retail prices. They're probably reselling it for a private collector and I would encourage a lot of haggling if you really want to buy anything here.

I was told it was a mix. There were a couple of Shep pieces that supposedly came from source, as well as I think the Saber, Cyclops, Hush, Bumblebee, Labrona, and some others that came from the artists directly.
Prices aside, it was a very good looking show and nice to see so many examples from many big name artists.

I definitely agree with this. Although I personally have found it harder to obtain that discount when the artist is extremely popular and there is a waitlist to buy works. In such circumstances and when you are buying at preview time, sometimes simply being given the opportunity to buy the work is a deal in and of itself.

Booked @Carmichael Gallery, Group Exhibit 5th June, by snausages on Jun 8, 2010 21:45:57 GMT 1, I agree RPM, some artists in high demand it's hard to get 10% but I know some galleries selling work from very hot artists still discount the work 10% even if there's a waitlist, it's a nice courtesy that many galleries offer. And if you're a previous client and good client I would push the issue a bit if they haven't offered a discount already.

Booked @Carmichael Gallery, Group Exhibit 5th June, by Benjamin Davies on Jun 8, 2010 22:50:46 GMT 1, I agree with rpmoore4, i think it is ok to ask for a discount especially if your buying more than one piece, all they can do is say no, and you have lost nothing.
At my shows i expect it to a certain degree, as this shows an interested in your work and at preview it also shows they have taken the time to come down to view the work before it even opens
