Gotta keep your blade sharp if its gonna be clean. I'm talking scalpels not stanleys.
ps Plus I get em free from work so I can afford to use fresh ones regularly

Greenwich Mean Times, by lukedixon on Oct 2, 2008 11:53:23 GMT 1, are you cutting the stencil from concrete? dont mean to go on about it........but 8 blades!
nice clean piece, i would maybe try connecting the lines around the image a bit more - add a bit more detail?

Greenwich Mean Times, by My Name is Frank on Oct 2, 2008 19:59:25 GMT 1, Cheers for your comments people. But I don't see what the fuss is all about wanting to use a blade with a nice sharp point to it. Doesn't take much to lose the tip of a scalpel blade.
Sh*t, I've just realised, this has turned into the most boring thread ever.
Just thought that we'd stick a pic of a new canvas on here. There's no stupid price tag on it (or any mention of even selling it). Its not a limited edition run. Its just the first collaborated idea that spawned Leftery that had recently been tweaked since the first attempt only 3 months ago. No worries if you don't like it. Cheers if you do. Don't even know if its worth mentioning that it was hand drawn (original sketch on Flickr) and not just downloaded and run through a Photoshop filter. Doesn't mean much these days does it?
Anyway, cheers for looking

Greenwich Mean Times, by Dellboyy on Oct 2, 2008 20:08:25 GMT 1, Pretty good, especially since it's hand drawn!
Only comment i'd make is it seems a bit busy in terms of the shaded areas, if there were less detail it would probably be more effective!

Cheers Dell, we will be experimenting with it further. Any crit is welcome. Here's the first sketch:
Ran it through Illustrator to get a vectored image that got tweaked here and there. Recently did a few more tweaks and cut the new stencil. And did I mention the blades?? zzzzzzzzz.......

Greenwich Mean Times, by lukedixon on Oct 2, 2008 20:34:49 GMT 1, haha im just jealous leftery, as im a pauper student i go through one blade for at least 3-4 stencils. I'm the kind of guy who puts water in stuff to make it last longer!.......
personally think the drawing works better for the image!...but i would say that!

Greenwich Mean Times, by GVD on Oct 2, 2008 20:44:31 GMT 1, Are you using a good rubber cutting mat? cause 8 blades is allot. Or do you use low quality blades where the tips keep breaking of?
edit: haha im blind theres a cutting mat on the pic. what material do you use to stencil? Acetate works wonders and you will see that its super easy to cut.

Recently bought another A2 pad from local art shop. Not the most suitable stencil material as it gets wet and curly quite easily (if you know what I mean). We're still cutting our teeth with this stencil game. Its damn good fun though

Greenwich Mean Times, by Martin DK on Oct 2, 2008 22:37:41 GMT 1, Looks good Leftery, However, I still think your "broken soldiers" is better. Theres always thumps up for hand drawn images, and this image is nice, I dont see a strong message in it (there dosent have to be), but its well drawn, and the stencil does look sharp!
Love the tag on the first image!

Tery here. I live in Greenwich, this is the spiritual home of the great English Empire. It was founded on its Navy, Greenwich is symbolic of it, being the centre of the world in terms of latitude and longitude and indeed time.
The most famous figure of naval history in Britain was Nelson. He defeated Napoleon. He was also laid in state at Greenwich after he died. He has a monument in trafalger square. He represents all that was great in great Britain.
The image is a statement about how the mighty have fallen, the empire is no more, Greenwich is no longer a powerful hub of the most feared empire on the planet. Its fair to say that if Nelson were born today and grew up in Greenwich, he would not be a naval commander, he would be a chav, probably knocking up a girl and getting a council flat. Hence the piece, which is titled 'Greenwich mean times'.
