Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Michael Jacob on Dec 3, 2010 14:52:07 GMT 1, Remember, like I mentioned earlier, no trash talking!
Happy Holidays forum members. Here is the piece that I was giving away a few weeks ago. Our lucky winner was Manty. It will be Mantys decision whether he wants this or one of my Princess Diana prints.
About this piece. Ive had this concept going for a while. Instead of a traditional portrait, I wanted to see myself by what I consume. This bag is one week of my trash. It is a snapshot of what keeps me going. From food (just the packaging), to work, to bills, its all there. I hope to continue this as a series. I've tried my hardest to keep all the my leftovers. As for the production side of this piece, it was a challenge. Aside of keeping track of the trash, I had to always request double of any food related items, like McDonalds. Whenever I got food, I had them give me a complete set of packaging, to make sure everything was clean, and food free. Im still working on how to show packaging from store bought stuff like meat. One of the local stores said they might help. Size is about 18x14x14cm.
Thanks again to the forum, its members and their continued support. If anyone is interested in future self portraits, drop me a line.

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Michael Jacob on Dec 3, 2010 16:01:54 GMT 1, rico The only way you can see the contents is to own the piece! The few people I showed it to at work, thought I was on crack. They did find it interesting to hold it and look into it. Its kind of engaging to look at it. I kind of like the idea of laying it out. I might run with that, and do a collage on canvas. It I do it, Ill give you some of the credit.

Ahhhhh, the penny drops! I thought you were printing editioned photo's of the bag, not the actual bag itself Silly me. But there's another, more affordable/accessible way to consider moving forward in this project Cheers ;D

- class...i know artists are supposed to "think outside of the box", but to be fair i think this one needs to be crated, burned, urned then scattered

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by froz on Dec 4, 2010 20:23:33 GMT 1, A very Interesting Concept, mike. For the people that are cracking jokes, please if it isn't your cup of tea, then don't bash it, just say you don't like it and move on.
really outside of the box mike. Again like Damien state, I would not be sure how to display it. The buyers would have to be really into modern art and probably have different pieces of art/sculptures. Maybe a photo would be the way to go like one of the other members said.
So far sounds like you have been getting some reasonable feedback. To think how much time it took for you to do that and making sure to get duplicates of everything that went in the trash.
try and get some type of representation at a museum of sorts. I think there would be one to take it and display it off in their modern section.

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by shower on Dec 5, 2010 0:27:18 GMT 1, Really like this. A gallery owner once told me that you can only fully understand a piece of art but talking to the artist, or at least gaining an understanding of their thought process. This piece is all that rolled up into a bag to physically see. Its rather cool!

I love the fact that most of your work has an added dimension to it and there is always a serious thought process going on.
Always looking forward to the next piece.

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Poppy Sunshine on Dec 5, 2010 12:24:34 GMT 1, It's a completely different thing.
MJ's is conceptual. The stuff you've highlighted is a very clever use of things to produce some great looking pieces of art and/or sculpture. Fantastic pieces and thanks for pointing them out but not the same thing as each other at all.
If we're not careful we'll end up down the well worn path of debate as to whether Tracey Emin is any good or not because all she's done is mess her bed up and not make any pretty pictures.

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Warm Gun on Dec 5, 2010 13:58:44 GMT 1, I quite like the idea behind this but it's a shame you asked for additional clean packaging on some items rater than just clean what your food was given in. Seem an awful waste and doesn't fit the concept of what makes you....as you're leaving 50% of your rubbish out (in some cases)

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Michael Jacob on Dec 5, 2010 17:22:17 GMT 1, Good point warmgun, and I definitely took that into consideration when I was doing this. I wanted to get my point across, but also did not want to run the risk of mold or anything like that long term. If I continue this series, I will make every effort to not multiply my waste. After reading your thread, I might take washable containers with me, when I go for fast food. Maybe they would just put my food in their and give me the containers. Thanks.

Michael Jacob self portrait #1, by Michael Jacob on Dec 5, 2010 17:26:37 GMT 1, Artsmybag, thanks for your opinions. While i dont agree with them, thats what art is all about. Not everyone will like every piece of art. The link you posted is great, I remember seeing those a few years back. What I am trying to do is show people who i am by what I consume (and not by what I look like). thanks again for the comments.
ps sorry you hated redemption. while the execution stands to be improved, i still like the concept.
