New Replete painting on found furniture, by Replete on Dec 14, 2010 20:17:46 GMT 1, Hi all, Just thought I'd share something special with you. It's my latest painting and is entitled "Capture A Moment In Colour's Course" and is painted on a late Victorian piece of furniture I found discarded on my travels which I believe to be a wooden frame that once held a mirror.
The piece is painted directly onto the back wood panel of the frame entirely in spraypaint featuring a girl with a outstretched hand amongst blossoms of vivid colours including pink, green, blue purple, red, orange, yellow and metallic gold. It features all manner of subtle depth and movement effects including a unique technique I invented that allows me to temporarily chemically alter the spraypaint so it behaves like oil paint allowing it to be smeared across the surface of the wood. The picture doesn't really do it justice but you can get a good idea. It's 24"x16" in size (of the painted area) and 28x26" including the frame.
Good to hear your thoughts on it.

New Replete painting on found furniture, by pcant on Dec 14, 2010 21:00:51 GMT 1, I think it looks fantastic (would love to see it in color, obviously, but just from the pics it looks great) and I dig the frame/repurposed furniture angle.

New Replete painting on found furniture, by Replete on Dec 14, 2010 21:33:05 GMT 1, thanks pcant and yes you really need to see it in person to get the full effect as the details, depth/movement effects are much more prominent as well as the colours, like the gold which acts as an accent which appears orange in this photo.

New Replete painting on found furniture, by Michael Jacob on Dec 14, 2010 21:44:58 GMT 1, Very nice Replete. To push this idea further, it would be neat if you used drawers from old furniture/desks. They would be smaller, and also suitable for hanging without and framing needed. Also, might be neat if you used drawers, to add some collage stuff to add dimension. Just some random ideas... but very nice piece you posted. Best of luck.

New Replete painting on found furniture, by Coach on Dec 14, 2010 22:41:20 GMT 1, Like that a lot Replete. Great to see work on a different medium. Amazed that its all done with spraypaint - it almost looks like thick oils from that photo. c

New Replete painting on found furniture, by wizzy on Dec 14, 2010 23:40:24 GMT 1, Nice execution as always Replete and applaud your experimentation with different techniques and media. What i dont get is why on that piece of furniture?, i do like paintings and painted furniture ie Campana / Gio Ponti and JM etc but they seem to think more about the actual piece it goes on, this of yours seems to deserve a better piece than a 19th. c. dressing table mirror?.

New Replete painting on found furniture, by Replete on Dec 15, 2010 23:28:26 GMT 1, really pleased about the response so far and in answer to the questions posed I have seen art on drawers Michael, I remember seeing some great portrait work by an artist I can't remember his name who did retro portraits based on deep south from places like New Orleans. They incorporated items such as scraps of wallpaper and fabric, barb wire and cutlery.
I've got a cutlery drawer on my bathroom wall that I use as shelving as well as an orange crate turned on it's side for the same purpose.
And yes Coach you're quite right if you see it in person some of the paint does look like oils due to my new technique allowing it to be smeared and I built up the inital base coats to give more texture.
I found the piece Wizbong whilst painting a wall one day last year. It was discarded in the bushes near the wall and I was taken with it as I didn't expect to find something like it there, and thought I'd save it from being burnt by the local drinking crews who frequent the area. Now I'm not a antiques expert apart from the knowledge that seeps in whilst Dickinson's Real Deal is on in the background so I know Clarice Cliff from Troika but I thought the frame attactive and suited the piece I intended to paint as I didn't want an over decorative ornate frame to distract from the painting.
In future I'll probably have a dig around some clearance sales or bric a brac shops to find some more bits to paint on.
I've had a buyer for it before I posted it on here, I'm just waiting for it to pass the wife approval procedure so from past experience it'll probably get rejected but touch polished wood it won't this time.
And urban umbrella art? Is that like Banksy's NOLA;? Funnily enough I was once asked to paint an umbrella for an exhibiton of umbrella's painted by urban artist. Seeing as I'm not an urban artist I politely declined the offer.
