Your latest Art Purchase?, by Harveyn on Jul 20, 2014 20:59:05 GMT 1, Big thanks for the perfect service as always from my friends at Whitewalls. A gallery I visited whilst in SF several years back and have remained very much in mind.
A very large ROA on its way from SF (190cm x 70cm x 46cm).
At the farmers a rather tasty raspberry IFTL uncut AP.
Check this guy out. Very impressed and the last addition. French artist Salvatore Coccoluto.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by met on Jul 21, 2014 6:14:44 GMT 1, Helmut Newton - signed lithograph It's art and she's in the street Congratulations.
That's Gunilla Bergstrรถmโ, one of Helmut Newton's favourite models in the late 70s and early 80s. The image is strong, well-known and has been featured in at least three of his books. If you're a completist in your collecting habits, check out the April 2012 issue (no. 488) of the French magazine, Photo, which has this image on the cover.
As an aside, the piece is most likely an offset lithograph โ not a lithograph, which is a very different medium.
Now for the warning message, and apologies for being a potential killjoy here. As a photography fan myself, and a former obsessive of the work by both Newton and Guy Bourdin, I consider it a duty to offer a word of caution:
It may not be that much of a concern for you, but if (i) you paid a premium for the Newton signature, and (ii) you don't have absolute confidence in the seller, then I'd recommend doing additional research into your purchase.
There is an astonishing number of counterfeit Newtons circulating on the market. Not just fake photos, but also fake signatures that have been added to posters, postcards, etc. and then advertised as genuine signatures or autographs.
This isn't just about eBay. You'll find plenty of fakes being sold by dealers, especially online. And surprisingly often by third tier auction houses โ perhaps because they're unscrupulous, or they're negligent with their due diligence, or their so-called experts are just inexperienced, ignorant and/or easily fooled.
artnet News actually ran an article earlier this month highlighting the scale of the problem. If you Google the terms "Helmut Newton, forgeries, artnet", I'm sure you'll find it easily.
Looking at your piece, would the dimensions (unframed) be 16" x 11" for the paper size, and around 13.5" x 9" for the image size? If so, it may have been cut out from the Newton book, Special Collection โ 24 Photo Lithos, and had the signature subsequently added. In this case, the back of the offset litho will have the name and date of the image ("Bergstrรถm, Paris, 1976") along with the text, "Preceding Page".
You may wish to consider contacting the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. I don't believe they provide an authentication service, but they should be able to offer additional information and advice. If you're London-based, you could also have a chat with Hamiltons Gallery, who deal in Newton's work.
Hope it all turns out well.
