weird collections, by gozgoz on May 15, 2008 16:28:42 GMT 1, do not disturb i get that its kinda like match books, but sick bags. did you get a cans catalogue gozgoz?
yeah thanks a lot for that bigman! got it from a colleague who went. she is a classic example of why street art rocks. she knows next to nothing about art. zilch. but i forced her to go to get me a programme. when i came back this week, she couldnt stop telling me about it and how amazing it was.
now back to topic: toys. yeah i never understood people who kept them in the boxes. i had to open them, take a huge whiff of that vinyl as it rushes out of the sealed bag. and then display them in all their lovely glory.

weird collections, by 13loco on May 15, 2008 16:33:01 GMT 1, Sometimes Art exhibitions, my wife loves the italian art from the National Gallery and ancient from BM... but I swap hours of classic museums for walks for the east side and some prints shopping... Itยดs great by internet but better after looking some stuff in fresh.
Last weekend was the May first and I retourn with a beautiful signed boolk from Adam Neate...

weird collections, by angryboy on May 15, 2008 16:35:05 GMT 1, I have a few of the James Jarvis vinyl toys, nothing like Ideabolo's collection though. I also have a mate called James Jarvis and the Kid Robot staff got all excited when he bought something on a credit card from there.
I've got a pretty mean Clipper lighter collection somewhere too from my teenage stoner days.

excellent stuff, actually the first proper prints I bought for reasonable money (other than that bird playing tennis scratching her backside when I was like 10) were of Gaudi's Casa Mila/La Pedera....one was blue and yellow and the other red and burgundy.

weird collections, by Agent Provocateur on May 15, 2008 16:44:26 GMT 1, ooh ooh weird collections, can I join in?
I've got about 100 'space' magazines that used to be in the guardian newspaper (Wednesday?). They were full of contemporary design, art, furniture etc. Anyone else got any?
I also collect original film/movie posters, mostly new ones (1990 and after) because they are affordable. But if you know what you're looking for there are some great very rare ones that are worth quite a bit:
Matrix โ i managed to persuade an ebay seller to stop his auction for the digital proofs of the three posters for the first film which were sent from the designers to Keanu Reeves and his agent (the guy worked there)... pretty proud of them!
Star Wars โ any selfrespecting bloke born in the 70's will appreciate these iconic posters. I have a couple, the light saber pointing to the sky with DV in the background, the mock up of a wall with various posters ripped off (v. rare one)... but the best of all is a Polish one, it is black and yellow with C3PO in the middle and start all around with some great polish typography
Spiderman 1 โ this was recalled because Spiderman had the Twin Towers reflected in his eye... and it was going to be released just as the atrocity in NY happened.
And on and on and on... sorry that was getting quite boring!
Ahhh and I do have a little collection of autographs from people I have met:
Darth Vader (AKA the 'Green Cross Code' man) Boba Fett (from the original 3 films) Alex Ferguson Uma Thurman (she signed one of my rare Japanese 'Kill Bill' posters when she was shooting a scene outside my building and wanted a shot from my window!!) Tony Blair Mick Hucknell Denis Lewis (Olympic Heptathlete) Gordon Brown Gareth Thomas (Welsh Rugby Union manager as some point I think!) Tanni Grey-Thompson (probably our greatest olympic athlete)
That's it for me!!! haha nutter alert or what ;D AP

weird collections, by Daan on May 15, 2008 17:07:14 GMT 1, I collect collections. At the moment my collections collection contains the following collections:
Stoneage artifacts (neolithic, mesolithic but mostly paleolithic Neanderthal tools) Ancient coins (Anything older than 1800's is game, love Greek and early eastern cultures) Watches (big and mechanical) Books (fiction, non-fiction and comics about the prehistory) Designer Toys (mostly customized) Art (prints and originals) Cars (just one by order of my wife, but a nice one, Mercedes 600 SEL - V12 - 410 BHP) Children (3 sons) Movies (DVD's now, 300+ VHS tapes in the trash last year) Old cellphones (a drawer full from the last 20 years)

Thanks! You also have a very nice collection of collections!
The 600 SEL is great fun, 5.10 meter, 2300 KG, 0-100 KM in 6 seconds, 20-25 liters for 100 KM
I do believe you have a very nice car. I seem to remember a picture of something Italian in silver with a prancing horse in the logo?

it starts off looking like Marmite - but it is a drink when you add boiling water - magic My mum was addicted to it as a kid and ever spread it on cream cakes
ps I seem to collect Buddhas - not sure how and when but there are several in every room.

weird collections, by bmjt on May 15, 2008 18:26:52 GMT 1, I just don't understand the draw to collect or even buy those kaws etc. vinyl toys. Can anyone explain?? I mean it's not like they're some weird fascination like toenails or belly button fluff, they're intrinsically linked to street art, but they're toys.....just don't quite get it.

if they were made of bronze would you class them as a toy?

weird collections, by rosstierney on May 15, 2008 18:50:06 GMT 1, calling them 'toys' is just stereotypical for someone who doesn't collect
they're a form of art & if they were made of bronze they would be 'statues'
i mean, who's going to play with a ยฃ600 'toy'

weird collections, by bmjt on May 15, 2008 19:03:36 GMT 1, I appreciate that, but that's their label isn't it. Plush toys etc. Fair enough some are made of more expensive materials, but they are in effect idolised; if only initially, in a cartoon-like, colouful, sometimes poseable form that resonates with a childlike 'toy' form. You could say you buy them to put on a shelf and look at, the same could be said for art, in that it serves no purpose bar an aesthetic one, but you can't escape their socially constructed meaning of child-like symbolism. Just seems stange for an adult.

I don't really mind, if that's what you're into, great, it's just looking at the sites dedicated to the stuff, and having seen some first hand I really can't shake the childish tag.

weird collections, by spencerlee on May 15, 2008 19:26:57 GMT 1, I used to collect the Panini (sp?) football stickers, I remember getting some money for my birthday and spending ALL of it on the stickers trying to complete the 1986 one. Shinies for the club crests and Scotland only getting half a sticker each.......
And yeah, I currently collect toys as well, not loads, I have about 10-15, but they are works of art IMO.
