Andy Warhol was well known to be an asshole though, so it's not a great person to quote. If business was the primary motive for all art, then it would be a very boring thing don't you think?

Yes,
But sadly sometimes it is boring and motivated by money that's why at least one artists charged a x10 increase in their prices and did small uninspired (boring) canvases to bulk up their show.

top 5 winners & losers in value 2008 & who in 2009, by jamesreeve5 on Dec 21, 2008 23:16:19 GMT 1, I think Banksy could fix the whole problem by not making anymore signed/# prints, and instead only selling unsigned/uneditioned prints at a little over what it costs to make them. Unfortunately, I don't think many of the people on this forum would support that, including most of the people who have posted on this thread. I don't think your last question has as much impact if you would have quoted my entire post instead of the silly tongue-in-cheek quote I put on the end of it.

top 5 winners & losers in value 2008 & who in 2009, by bradpitt on Dec 21, 2008 23:16:54 GMT 1, Money has to be made of course, but as an artist integrity should be top of the list. Plenty of artists have very successful long careers without being greedy and milking their collectors money. I sometimes think it's the lesser artists who cash in, take the money and run.
What do I know anyway, my integrity went out the window a long time ago when I done the rude with a granny.

top 5 winners & losers in value 2008 & who in 2009, by Ruggs on Dec 21, 2008 23:17:00 GMT 1, I believe it'll be the 'unsigned' prints that will drop further in value as they seem to be currently doing so. Signed copies will slip a little maybe, but stablise and rise again in time. If I had any signed prints I certainly wouldn't panic. I would hang onto them. I'd just be happy to pick up a few more unsigned prints. Anyway! regardless of whatever they're current or future value, you have them because you love them, not because they're worth this, that and the other.

I don't think that old unsigned like QV or LIITA etc will fall in value. In fact - in the long run I reckon these will be worth more than modern signed works. Just my opinion

no worries mate, I shoulda put one of these at the end...
I do however think it's ironic that people who are members of a discussion board dedicated to an artist who produces runs of 500 prints at 500 quid a pop thinks it's uncouth to mention art and money i the same sentence.

I agree with JBOY on this... people who see finacnial value in art are no better or worse than those who don't...
This is the Christian calling the Atheist "unenlightened" and the Atheist calling the Christian "uninformed" and round and round we go.

top 5 winners & losers in value 2008 & who in 2009, by Ruggs on Dec 21, 2008 23:44:51 GMT 1, Richard! I could have been more detailed in my comments, but I didn't want to go on and on and bore the sh@t out of everyone. I think I should have said MOST unsigned, not all will devalue of course. The unsigned classics will retain strong values. As I said before the important thing is you have them because you love them and not because they're possibly worth a small fortune.

Exactly, was going to post the same response but you've already done it and better. The most sensible thing i've ready on here in ages.

top 5 winners & losers in value 2008 & who in 2009, by funster on Dec 22, 2008 12:21:12 GMT 1, I have to say I don't think for a second 2008 has produced any where near 5 'winners'. Once again we've seen artists come along and have an almost flash fire success, but just like flash fires there are now some smouldering remains. And I'm not just talking about financial success, it's the artists success that then allows them to grow and adapt which for some people I don't think will happen now. Parla though has had a stellar year and is stronger at the end of it than at the beginning. I also think 2009 will be a turn around for true talents such as Harrington, Micalleff and others.

I think it will become more focused on great artwork than publicity driven dross. Banksy, Micallef, Walker, Neate, Parla - those guys will make it through as they have something real to offer. I also think artists like JR and Slinkachu will be recognised further for the genius they bring to the table.
