Numbered or AP ?, by Happy Shopper on Dec 11, 2008 0:18:20 GMT 1, Personally I think the Pink J&J looks weird. So much better in blue... which is probably why they printed it blue!

Numbered or AP ?, by pfffffffffft on Dec 11, 2008 3:47:05 GMT 1, ^is that a fact or your opinion??
That is a fact. as posted:
The desire for lower print numbers came from the printing process itself. In the case of lithographs, etchings, and woodblocks, the first prints off the press tended to be sharper images. As more images were pressed, the stone, wood, or metal plates tended to wear down so the images pressed later in the run didnt seem to be as crisp. In the case of screen prints, the more the screens are used the more likely it is they will get clogged up thus not as much paint/ink will come through. Depending on the printer, some will be sloppy about cleaning the screens, but others will be a bit more vigilant in cleaning them. I usually dont find the print quality on later numbers of screen prints to be as dubious as it would be on lithos, etc. Aside from APs being essentially the lowest print number you can get as they are first off the press, because they are artists proofs it's also thought that the artist inspects each of prints for quality control. Personally, besides the quality of the print (because they are first off the press), I think the only reason they command slightly higher prices is because they are unique to the standard run (just that little AP and different edition total listed makes them unique). I am not sure that it dictates a much higher price but it does tend to command a slightly higher price (usually around 10 to 20%)

Numbered or AP ?, by Martin Whatson on Dec 11, 2008 8:49:11 GMT 1, Usually there is a reason why the artist (and the printer) chose to do the original run in the colours they are done in! That said, there is always something a bit special about a print that noone else got!
Personally I think Nick Walker prints WAY too many artistproofs. Look at the get your artistproofs out there lads thread. 75% is from him!!

Numbered or AP ?, by mcster on Dec 11, 2008 9:05:39 GMT 1, My friend has a Gangster Rat that she bought in person from POW. She'd never got it framed and I finally convinced her a few weeks ago that she can't leave it in the tube forever. I got it out to have a look and it's numbered (a high number), yet by the Banksy signature was "A/P".
Anyone seen that happen before?

Numbered or AP ?, by doublehelix on Dec 12, 2008 12:39:14 GMT 1, The only APs I have are gifts from artists. I'd usually go for the numbered edition unless I've missed out, then I might chase an AP. I don't really understand why people attribute extra value to APs, unless they differ from the numbered edition that is.
