Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by kahuna on Jun 18, 2008 2:27:39 GMT 1, Similar experience with TLSG. Not sure if they are stupid or arrogant when it comes to contract law.
Filed a complaint with my credit card co. about 6 weeks ago and received an instant refund.

Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by Karl Read on Jun 18, 2008 8:55:18 GMT 1, I called them and asked for a refund as mine turned up broken! They told me i was not entitled to one if they were offering a replacement! I had a long arguement on the phone asking why and they came out with loads of lame excuses. I told them to put it in writing why so i could use it against them to get my money back because i knew they were lyeing. They eventually agreed to a refund and the whole time they have consistently not replied to emails or not returned my calls. Im going to ask again soon about when i will be refunded and if i dont get an answer im taking it to my credit card company. I will not be dealing with them in a hurry.

Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by freeisthemagic on Jun 18, 2008 8:56:32 GMT 1, Ok he's a fucking con man who will stab you in the back to get what he wants. If my character assassination helps people to not get ripped off then I'll assassinate all day long. I have been told by a number of artists that have shown there that the man in a total crook and never to be trusted. I doubt we'll see another decent artist there from the US or UK, his names muck in NY.

Very strong words - have you personally experienced this behaviour, or is it all on heresay from people you know? Doesn't quite add up to me, why would a gallery run by such a crook have appealed to Doze Green & Rostarr? I also think that you'll be hung on your own words with regards never seeing another decent artist appear there.

Strong words for a reason, talk to any artist in NY/LA or any gallery owner even in the UK and they will just raise their eyebrows and shake their heads. Crooks and con men are good at what they do, smarm their way around and get you to believe their bullshit, if you think I'm full of shit just go ask any of the artists that have shown there in the past two years and see what they have got to say about the place, it will be pretty damming.

Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by DYL4N on Jun 18, 2008 9:50:57 GMT 1, Part of an Email received last week - IMHO I think there doing there best, they have just made a holy bollox of the whole thing Although they could have sorted it out a bit better
QUOTE: -
Please understand that we have produced all 600 hand-crafted sculptures in house and there were delays in guilding and boxing. Then we had to package and ship out the sculptures in batches of 50. This has been a tremendous learning experience for us as we are an art gallery and not a factory. We have sincerely tried our best to deal with the situations that have arose.

So you're basing your opinions on what you've been told as opposed to directly what you have experienced - rumours and conjecture - and again this still doesn't make sense as to why Doze, who has been around writing in New York since the early 80's wouldn't have had such conversations with connected people, prioir to showing, and decided that this was a bad place to show. is he really that desperate to exhibit in the UK I don't believe that he is. I can accept that there are always going to be mistakes made, and relationships break down. However I sense a hidden agenda with what your implying, an axe to grind. Maybe they have f*cked you off and you have good reason to state what you do, but somehow I feel you've slightly overstepped the mark

You really have very little idea about what goes on and just look at glossy facades, they are bad news sadly, they con their artists, their clients and their suppliers. Do I have an axe to grind? no not really but I know a WHOLE LOT of people who do, and they have big axes.

Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by zippyblip on Jun 18, 2008 11:28:56 GMT 1, Just picked up on this- seems to be a really sad outcome as I had high hopes for this gallery.
I bought a Union Mask at the Kennard show last year- and chatting to the staff it seemed like a very decent outfit, group of friends going into business together etc etc - everyone's dream job (well at least mine, but then I work for a management consultancy ).
Having said that, it took a long time to actually get the print, and communications weren't great. It did eventually turn up, but only after I called a few times and also reminded them they had committed to sending it to me and not for me to come get it myself.
I then went to the Beejoir show and it was back to normal gallery service. Massive queue outside which was only if you wanted a print, but no-one seemed to know this so we stood in it pointlessly before having a strange Orwellian double-speak conversation with the girl on the door and eventually managed to convey a commitment NOT to buy anything. Show was also a bit of a disappointment anyway (but that's only my opinion).
So i guess another enterprise that felt ethical and genuine goes the same way as Laz? C'est la Vie.
On the bright side, I thought the organisation at the Walker show at the BRP was much better, although I didn't manage to buy anything.
I do think TSLG is a top venue, I like the layout and feel. Maybe things will turn around, but it sounds like there is a lot of ill feeling out there and it'll take a lot of work and a pretty serious change in the style of leadership to correct.

They should npt have taken pre-orders. Bad judgment on their part. Nevertheless, they should at least communicate better. Maybe a mass email to all buyers explaining the situation, offer refunds and ask for more time.

Leonard Street Gallery - Big Disappointment, by fergy on Jun 18, 2008 13:17:05 GMT 1, I've never dealt with TLSG myself but I constantly hear bad things about them. Bad communication if any, taking money then selling to someone else etc etc.
It's a shame, some of the smaller galleries really struggle, but are much more personable and better to deal with. Guess the biggies like TLSG get away with being arses. Its a vicious circle really, the big artists go with the big galleries and vice versa.
