How long would you queue?, by insite on Nov 26, 2007 12:46:33 GMT 1, On the assumption that I was queuing for a signed print of an image that I really liked, I'll use Festival as an example, then I reckon I could do 24 hours+. A day outside in the cold is nothing new to me and if it meant I could buy a print that I could never afford from a secondary source then so be it.
As to FPRs point, well yes it's not right is it ? but if it were the only way to have the image for my wall then why not ? I would be buying for me not for potential profit so I wouldn't see myself as the good little capitalist, maybe some others in the queue, that wouldn't surprise me. I can see how the accusation could be levelled at the sellers though, taking full advantage of the hysteria to create lots of free publicity.
I came to this party a bit late so I don't have previous years Grottos to put me off, also arriving late as I did means that the (possible) sale of the L.A. prints MAY be the last opportunity that I get to buy Banksys that I can afford so again it's worth a bit of discomfort. £500 (just a guess I don't know anything ) plus a couple of days of my time weighed against £2K on ebay there's only one option for me and it's the route of the mentalist ;D.
Although I say all this in all probability I won't get any where near the Grotto, travel times plus the need to arrange child care at short notice all mean that it's going to be all but impossible for me to make a trip at short notice so if I'm going to go to a show it'll be Bristol which is close enough that I could go and spend more than 20 minutes there before having to catch a train home.

How long would you queue?, by dmandpenfold on Nov 26, 2007 12:54:05 GMT 1, So now the Ghetto looks like it is happening would be interested to see how long people are prepared to queue. Assume hypothetically that you are queueing for a SIGNED banksy print and it is an image that you really like.
If FPR has any friends in high places, he might be able to arrange with POW for a banksy release on the 15th Dec. That way we can all get tanked at TLSG on the evening of the 14th, start queuing 6 pack in hand at 2 am and take it in turns to do a dash for a donner and chips (felaffel for the vegetarians)
at the very least we should be guaranteed of good company

How long would you queue?, by numusic on Nov 26, 2007 12:55:35 GMT 1, I wouldn't queue anymore, to be honest standing in various queues this year and hearing about others has allowed me to see the most negative sides of collecting art On top of this I just think its a way for galleries to have a power trip, I doubt they can really argue from the side "it allows our true collectors to get something" anymore. Is it only me or is there something not very not right buying festival in a massive queue in a shop that has always seemed anti-capatalist for hundreds of pounds. Isn't it demeaning and doesn't it label those that queue as good little capalists or the shop that sells them as lacking integrity? It just seems like a prime opportunity for the murdoch press to scoff at 'banksy fans'.... Unless the profits go to a good cause.
Ironic hey.. perfect for a Festival release. !

How long would you queue?, by danvnuk on Nov 26, 2007 13:06:16 GMT 1, see that's the thing - if I was queuing with some of the good guys of the forum(No, not you c*nts, the good guys*) And we had beer, food etc etc - I could sit there for ages.
*Just Kidding of course.
Athough saying that, there is a 'Buzz' at Santas Ghetto - think I preferred it in previous years when it was less well known and more empty (wonder why? LOL) - but there is definately a buzz....it's exciting to see what's been put on display. (still pains me to think of being able to purchase a CWS for £280 and thinking it was too expensive)
Don't know If I'd bother queueing up much - but depends what the image was I guess....If it was festival for example - I wouldn't bother at all ;D if it was Sale Ends - I'd consider it.
If it was something totally suprising and new by Banksy (like Flag's was) - I'd probably get swept up in the hype and be donning a bobble hat and purshasing a sleeping bag before you could say 'complete-c**k'

How long would you queue?, by corblimeylimey on Nov 26, 2007 13:09:33 GMT 1, hmmm I queued for a few hours for an unsigned Flag last year - was boring....cold....and boring...and cold (did I mention that already?) and I wanted a sausage and egg McMuffin and a disgusting coffee from the McDonalds across the road but couldn't leave the queue in case I lost my spot.....only got interesting the last 30 mins or so when the TV people and Journalists turned up. hmmmm so bearing this in mind - 3 hours or so is my maximum queuing time for anything desireable, be it a signed Banksy or whatever else I want- after that, I'll start going a bit mad, possibly soil myself, and then try to chew my own arm off, or arguably worse, some other poor queue'ees arm. You've all been warned. ;D ;D ;D ;D
I agree, 3 hours tops for me.

It just seems like a prime opportunity for the murdoch press to scoff at 'banksy fans'.... Unless the profits go to a good cause.
Isn't that the whole point of the Festival print? I've always viewed it as a piece of self-effacing art. Banksy taking the p*ss out of himself, POW/Laz and to a lesser extent his fans - in the nicest possible way of course. The anti-capitalist hero becoming the very thing he despises. The central message of the print remains the same whether we stand in a physical queue or frantically press f5 for a day. Obviously a massive queue at the Ghetto would add to the irony, but then it's not like it's the first time people have queued for the print.
If POW do release a signed Banksy at the Ghetto and publish the date in advance, I've no doubt we'll see completely unprecedented numbers queuing. Many of whom will be completely new Banksy "fans". Reduce this question to its core and you're effectively asking "how long would you queue to be given £2K+?". That's going to be a very very strong driver for a lot of people; particularly, with Christmas to pay for.

How long would you queue?, by goodbyekitty on Nov 26, 2007 16:44:42 GMT 1, The 10 hours I spent in the Laz queue/shambles has hardened me I think! The positive side of that day was the people I met who kept me sane (ish)
I got my flags in Bristol so it was only an hour or so wait (or long dentist appointment as I told work....)
If I had good company and an endless supply of hot chocolate I'd go for the 24 hour+ mark.

How long would you queue?, by bert on Nov 26, 2007 21:14:29 GMT 1, I would queue for a seriously long time if I knew I was going to get a decent print at the end of it, but not knowing puts me off.
Taking the day off work to stand in the cold all day and possibly not see anything I like is too much of a risk...but then what if the rumours about Hewlett and Banksy are true!! Aggggh!
