What material do you use for stencils? , by idiom on Dec 4, 2008 10:23:53 GMT 1, It depends on size, how many times you intend to reuse it, intricacy, time, etc but i like to use either acetate, cardboard, thick brown paper or stencil card. For me it really just depends on the situation. Hope that helps!

What material do you use for stencils? , by hero on Dec 4, 2008 17:16:19 GMT 1, i use acetate but TBH im about to switch to decent GSM paper-acetate does not absorbe the paint well enough for a bigger run of images but its much better for cutting on...unless you print right onto the paper!

What material do you use for stencils? , by schlomo on Dec 4, 2008 17:53:52 GMT 1, I experimented with various things at the start, stencil card, normal card, and then plastic. At the mo i tend to use 3mm thick clear plastic sheets. Its a bit of a bugger to cut and you go through a blade or two if you're cutting large stencils, but they dont end up getting ruined after a few sprays (or in a flood)...

seriously i hate cutting stencils, but lately regular paper has been working fine, super easy cutting. if you don't saturate it too much initially, and sandwich between something, when not using it stays pretty flat, and i'm a fan of underspray anyway.

But anything and everything. Thin card, thick card, pizzaboxes, cardboard, photo paper, regular printer paper etc etc.
All you can cut in is possible!
I use a bit of spraymount sometimes, but usually stick it to my pants or sweater before putting it on the canvas to remove the most sticky parts!!
Just be carfeful when you add the spraymount to the stencil!

Take the box apart to cut the stencil and then reconstruct it with the opposite panel removed. It holds everything in place so you have a stable stencil and it also gives you a ready made spray guard to prevent the paint leaking around your work. The thickness of the card is about right too.

they are a bit softer than acetate but great for size all on one sheet
they normally work out really well for huge stencils
smaller stuff I normally use acetate or waxed manilla

I hate using acetate! it reacts with the paint IMO. it will bubble and bend when i spray it. anyone have the same problem? (after a few minutes it will go strait again tho)

Can't wait to try this out for some really large stencils ;D

The tape makes the paper more sturdy and also allows you to reclaim your stencils after it is covered in paint. Just wait until the paint is dry on the stencil and it can easily be chipped off the tape.

thats what acetate does, but it takes ages to dry

Saying that...my kitchen table would be in a better state if used a machine I guess.

I know a lot of people would find this really flimsy but it seems to work for me, even on the street. I love how you can press paper in to grooves/rough texture as you spray to minimize underspray
