MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by sand on Apr 8, 2011 10:55:34 GMT 1, Great variety of artists...obviously it's not a complete list of 'who's who' of graffiti and street art..as that would be impossible, and a line has to be drawn somewhere.
But I'm surprised that SEEN and Phil Frost aren't on the list.
It's a shame (although not a surprise) to see Blu not part of the show after his mural was buffed.

Didnt get a good look at the Mcgee/Espo etc Street Market thing, but the Os Gemeos stuff looks SICK! Mr Cartoons piece is amazing too. Alot of good stuff From MSK and Retna etc... Ben Eine was there but not painting at the show.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by oneeye on Apr 8, 2011 15:18:02 GMT 1, It's pretty disheartening that FAILE and PARLA didn't make the cut. And I hear KAWS only got a small wall to show his stuff. Oh well, can't please everyone. I do hear the show is next level tho. Can't wait to see it.

Was surprised to not see him on the LA weekly list considering he's in the 'Art in the Streets' book!

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by A.R.T. on Apr 8, 2011 17:41:59 GMT 1, Blu was included until he kinda shot himself in the foot by putting up the mural he did right in from of a US Military Veterans Building. I would assume that if the mural went up anywhere else in LA it would have not been buffed.

Placement isn't part of street art? imo it was perfect for an anti-war mural. And on the other side, you just have censorship wich is bad, very bad.

Just from my vantage point I thought it was Deitch who shot himself in the foot given his reaction. It wasn't even the strongest piece from Blu but the reaction certainly elevated any lasting impression on the viewer. No reason for Blu to do anything else with that show as how could an artist possibly encore and bow after that?

I guess the reason for that is Blu knew it was being buffed before it was anywhere near finished. He decided to finish it to that standard rather than stopping as soon as he found out. I read a pretty interesting interview with Blu talking about it, i'll try to find it.

Street art is not a widely accepcted form of art so I agree with Dietch's censorship. Putting up an image like that is fine, but the placement was totally wrong being that MOCA would take the heat for everything not Blu. Like I said, if this mural went up anywhere else in LA, it would not have been buffed. Just imagine if there was a huge street art show opening up next to Ground Zero in NYC and an artist put up a mural condeming the US and their capitalist ideals, and mocking the people who died in the tragedy. That would not be taken to lightly either and would be buffed immedialty like Blu's was in LA.

Blu said that during the time he painetd the mural (about 6 days) he talked with a lot of people, veterans too, and all of them understood that the piece was not offensive and liked it.
Just Deitch when he came back to L.A. ans saw it (before it wad finished) asked to Blu to paint a new piece, something that could invite the people to enter MOCA. Blu said no and the day after he found (informed by a blogger) that his mural was going to be buffed.
Blu didn't shot himself in the foot. Deitch shot Blu's foot.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by boaty on Apr 9, 2011 23:40:43 GMT 1, Re the move to Brooklyn.... "The LA exhibition expects to travel and next year it will land at the Brooklyn Museum, where the audience, Gastman says, can expect an altered version. This tidbit of information will probably provide relief to New York art fans who have already noticed the exclusion of a number of prominent local talents in the LA debut." sadly, I may miss the LA show - unless I get out there in early summer...but, real excited about the show at the Brooklyn Museum - can't wait!
anyone know when the book is coming out? - would be cool to have every graf writer, street artist etc etc etc. under the sun sign it! (yep, I'm a dreamer...!)
