MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by joeschmo on Apr 10, 2011 17:39:00 GMT 1, Banksy would never be MOCAs bitch, he might do a piece in the street taking the piss out of it maybe, that'll get him some reach arounds and a ton of free PR, which he loves more than anything.

That would be sweet if there was a Banksy print release! I'm not counting on it though.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by thx1138 on Apr 13, 2011 9:28:16 GMT 1, It's been a long while since i posted anything on here but felt compelled to do so now....I have had the pleasure of seeing what has been going on inside the MOCA walls for the past many days and I gladly will go on record and say that this show is 100% HISTORIC!....As far as anything Graffiti or Street Art related there has never been such a collection of talent under one roof...EVER! While of course it's not 100% complete or inclusive I don't think it's meant to be but it does a beautiful job of telling the story of Graffiti from it's roots to current day...Kudos to Deitch and Co!.....the giant space is so jam packed with eye searing visuals it is overwhelming and will definitely warrant repeat viewings....The LA version of Mcgee ESPO REAS Street Market blows the New York classic exhibition out of the water! it's like the ultimate Disney Ride for art vandals....mind blowing detail!....The Banksy room is retarded fresh with a few new large canvases and some new re-workings of classic images...my favorite so far that I will trade my mother in for if I could is a giant Indian "No Trespassing" on wood that is fantastic! similar to the one he did in San Fran I believe but this time the Indian is standing....the man is no dummy and more than holds his own in a space full of art Kings...The Os Gemeos room is classic Os Gemeos with a few stunning stunning pieces....They have also turned the outside box office cube building into a giant double faced classic Gemeos Balaclava man that is fresh and the kicker is what they are building inside the chain link fence on top of the guys head...will not spoil it. The Basquiat that is hanging in the storefront recreation of the legendary Fun Gallery might be one of the rawest Basquiats I have ever seen and also might be one of my favorites of his that I have never seen before. all that being said I do think that Phil Frost is sadly missing from this exhibit and is a crucial link that cannot be overlooked....hopefully they will include him in the NYC version of the show...and oh yeah...can't believe that BLU is not inside the building at all?!! fucked.....in two days history will be made!! and i urge anyone that was born between 1965 and 1995 to make a pilgrimage to this ART MECCA!!!!

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by thx1138 on Apr 13, 2011 10:26:06 GMT 1, Jeffrey doesn't need any help from me trust me.....I am simply giving credit where credit is due....the feeling and emotions that I felt walking around the space were akin to a 5yr old kid walking around Disneyland for the first time...you could not wipe the permanent grin off my face....and I challenge anyone else that get's to see the exhibit to hold back a perma grin....
again I will say:
"There has never been a show...museum or otherwise with this caliber of talent and historic scope with regards to Graffiti/Street Art anywhere in the world...EVER" I just hope that this show doesn't spawn a slew of bastardized lesser versions of itself in random other museums around the world.....sort of like how after Bonhams first Urban Art auction every auction house jumped on the wagon and started milking the 'Urban Art' cow.....until they got blood....but I have a sneaking suspicion that the cultural impact that will be created by this exhibit will cause ripples for many years to come....it is inevitable.

Why would you hope that? I'd have thought it would be a great thing to have more graffiti and street art in museums, its not Jeffries god given right to be the only person allowed to show this type of art in a museum environment.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by thx1138 on Apr 13, 2011 12:20:33 GMT 1, I have no issue with Graffiti/Street Art getting some much needed shine in Museums or anywhere else for that matter...that is obviously inevitable and would be amazing to see....
I am talking about the 'Bastardized' versions of this show that will be rolled out by Dilettante curators hosting the 'Graffiti Show Du jour'... that always hurts to see..... Once you see the quality and intelligence of the MOCA shows content and curation you will realize that the bar has been rightfully set very high....Will it be tough to repeat/surpass? absolutely.....will that stop the bandwagoneers from trying? probably not.....
All that being said, the MOCA show only tells one angle of the story/history....the most popular one..... and the one that most of us know all too well....
I look forward to fresh, thoughtful and well thought out future exhibits of Graffiti/Street Art wherever they should pop up......Lord knows there are many more artists and stories to focus on and the MOCA show is merely one slice of the pie........just please for the love of God don't try and repeat/copy this one!

Let's put it in context hey.
You could equally say...
It would be easy to smash this show out the water for a curator with access to that type of money and that list of sponsors.. Tristan Manco/Steve Laz & Serota curating at the Tate would be far more interesting and relevant for example.
Art in the Streets is Dad dancing at some dodgy wedding sponsored by Nike. Like you say, a candy shack at Disneyland that rehashes the past with focus on the Deitch stable of artists. Copying what provincial museums and the commercial galleries have been doing for years, just supersized.
It's an easy sell to the likes of us.
If it's making "History" , it's only doing so in a "Museum" context and its cultural relevance is a fraction of that of the Beautiful losers show for example. Would be a mistake to see this as "defining" anything other than a small fraction of the past.
In saying that, I'm sure it's gob smackingly awesome and they've made the show they wanted. I for one will for sure be making the trip.
Thanks for the "review" appreciated !

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by thx1138 on Apr 13, 2011 13:24:16 GMT 1, Listen martedanielsen...you clearly have a bias against Deitch and whomever else has alot of money and access that it probably actually takes to put on such a show...I for one don't give a shit Who What Where is responsible for this show, I am merely speaking my honest opinion of what I have seen with my own two eyes and am sharing my excitement with my fellow art loving forum members...
No one is taking credit away from any other gallery or museum that has been championing this art for years well ahead of the big boys...we all know there have been many....Nuart for one is excellent every time...shit...even the friggin Cans festival was historic IMO....
Tristan Manco & Laz doing a show at the Tate would be more interesting and relevant? Are you listening to yourself?
Can Tristan Manco and Laz recreate Ramellzee's entire studio that has never been seen by anyone inside a museum, and that has been donated by Ramellzee's widow? Can anyone else other than the people involved track down and recreate the Fun Gallery with some of the earliest Basquiats, Harings, Dondis Lee's that no one has rarely seen all sourced from the personal collections of Henry Chalfant, Patty Astor, Martha Cooper etc? Can Tristan Manco & Laz pull together an exhibit on early Los Angeles Cholo gang Graffiti from the 70's and have Mr Cartoons insane customized Ice Cream truck on display? In London? come on mate please don't drag me into an argument I was not even making and channel your obvious gripe with whomever it is you're griping about elsewhere....
IMO This MOCA show is 50% for the purists and & 50% for the general public that knows fuck all about this art and that will guaranteed walk away from this show having a whole new found respect for Graffiti in general...and that in my book is huge task to accomplish....it's even possible that after seeing this show your grandma might be able to tell the difference between a Twist throwup and an Os Gemeos burner ...and what's wrong with that? why the vitriol?
This show is not 'making history' because it's in a 'museum' please don't insult me..this show is making history because it is AMAZING in quality & content period!
I never said this show is 'defining' anything new...it is merely the best version of what many have attempted in the past...I have an advantage because i have seen it, and i urge you to hold judgement until you have seen it for yourself.
I welcome anyone attempting to put together intelligent quality shows why would I not? Laz & Manco want to have a go? fuckin hell why not let's go! but I am not a gallerist, or a businessman, nor am I associated with anyone responsible for this show....but I am not above giving credit where credit is due and I am not some art tourist that knows not what he speaks of....
Listen martedanielsen...you clearly have a bias against Deitch and whomever else has alot of money and access that it probably actually takes to put on such a show...I for one don't give a shit Who What Where is responsible for this show, I am merely speaking my honest opinion of what I have seen with my own two eyes and am sharing my excitement with my fellow art loving forum members...
