MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by joeschmo on Apr 16, 2011 5:10:08 GMT 1, Dont think we would be having this Exhibit if it was not for MR B he made it all possible , alot of artists owe him a beer me thinks .
Why because he spunked thousands of pounds on PR to get famous and make graffiti acceptable again?
I personally think this would have happen without him, just like it did back in the 80's anyway.

shows this big and this well recognised in the '80s? which ones are you talking about? you cannot deny what Banksy has done to change the scene - whether you like it or not, the sort of recognition and acceptance that it gets is hugely down to him

Agreed 100%. I think Banksy's impact cannot be questioned but from a significance perspective that is a UK thing. From a global perspective how can you ignore the critical part Deitch and Beautiful Losers have played with artists such as Fairey, McGee, ESPO, Frost, Futura, KAWs and OS Gemeos (the list goes on).

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by Sally on Apr 16, 2011 10:02:35 GMT 1, From Melrose and Fairfax...
There were a stack of papers sitting on Banksy's big cement roller in his display and it says "Banksy's installation is an ongoing project. He claims this is so he can make new work in reaction to developments both inside and outside the museum over the next few months. It might also be because he was running a bit late."

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by waltercrunk on Apr 17, 2011 5:56:58 GMT 1, I just got home from the MOCA members opening tonight, and the exhibition was simply amazing! I took so many pictures. Gonna upload all of them tonight. Some close ups and stuff many of the art blogs have not posted. Moca is literally 2 miles from my home. And on my way there spotted 2 new Invader pieces just 3 blocks from my house! Saw Futura, Craig Stecyk, Martha Cooper, Steve Lazarides, Fab 5 Freddy, and the Cold Crush Brothers performed. A great night for LA!

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by artpartment on Apr 17, 2011 9:08:36 GMT 1, great wall with samo(basquiat),fekner(decay),leicht(invader) and hambleton with works from 1978!!! amazing stuff
and finally a link to some pictures of the opening
..If Pop artists responded to the shiny new consumer culture that emerged after World War II, graffiti artists responded to its decay, reflecting disillusionment and broken promises.
This underbelly of consumerism also surfaces in several large, immersive installations. โStreet Marketโ by Todd James, Barry McGee and Stephen Powers is a facsimile of a clutch of narrow city streets lined with decaying, fetid buildings and bedecked with cheap electric signage.

Agree with yourself and CG. Henry & Martha played an indispensable & pivitol role in fo 30+ years along with the unmentioned Aaron Rose who initially turrned JD onto street art/graff some years ago now.
Amazing collage of classic runner images

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by Warm Gun on Apr 17, 2011 10:39:51 GMT 1, Look like OS Gemeos stole the show here (imo). Kinda looks like not much effort or thought has gone into Banksy's installation.

Well that answers that. Cool posts Fragile, as ever.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by waltercrunk on Apr 17, 2011 22:14:58 GMT 1, Anyone have more pics of the Haring stuff? Was it just the subway station work?
Funny you ask about K. Haring stuff. He had a separate room with his stuff and Basquiat. 2 of the best pieces the public was NOT allowed to photograph. 1 was a vase that had been hit by multiple artists including Haring, Haze and others, the 2nd was a Basquiat that was guarded by 2 of the gallery employees.
Today is official opening, Im going back later this week and try to get some more pics. Theres alot I didnt get. It was extremely crowded and pretty warm for museum standards. Glad everyone likes the pics!
