Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by jboy on May 26, 2007 13:42:02 GMT 1, Its probably my fault this all started, but i gave a massive wad of mine back to charity. What bugs me is though that every auction that ive seen has copied my description and often uses my images.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by curiousgeorge on May 26, 2007 13:45:04 GMT 1, All the hate on here is silly really, how about you all listing your works at cost?
While i think it may be a bit much re:the books, a betting man would assume the majority of this board have made monster profits on things in the past.
I'm new to all this, so probably appear naive. But someone makes a profit boo-hoo, the irony of people complaining about people making a profit sure seems lost on many here.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by Run Pig Run on May 26, 2007 15:36:53 GMT 1, what charity is it anyway? some of these so called charities are some of the richest companies in the land, charity begins at home in my book and if some scallywag wants to buy a few catologues to sell on i've no problem with it. Theres a bloke who stands outside my local somerfield who sells the big issue day in day out, year in, year out, yet why doesn't he walk into the store behind him and get a fucking job at somerfield, they are always advertising! There are literally hundreds of homeless charities in London and at the top theres always gonna be some fat cat wanker smoking away your donation. It might ease your middle-class guilt but it doesn't make you a better person if you chuck a couple of quid at a charity every now and again. neg me all you want, but you know i have a point.....now let the little man sell his silly catalogues in peace and we can all get on with our lives.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by spidey on May 26, 2007 16:52:20 GMT 1, bombhugger - your point is so spot on.
I spent over a year volunteering for two charities - Crisis and the Jubilee Debt Campaign both in London.
You wouldnt believe the sort of money some of the staff get paid and what they spend donation money on - for lavish 'expenses'.
I was a very naive middle class student, when i worked for them and it was a real eye opener - they truly are businesses, with their eye on their bottom line and what publicity stunt they could come up with next. When the Jubille Debt Campaign decided to throw the Live8 concert - (which didnt have any specific goals by the way) i gave my free tickets away.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by corblimeylimey on May 26, 2007 16:54:39 GMT 1, curiousgeorge & bombhugger, maybe you'd see the different side if you'd just been ripped off for over ยฃ100 then you come on here and realise that you could have bought the catalogue for ยฃ15 direct from the gallery, misinformed, misguided people don't deserve to be ripped off.
I think it's fair that Mike has started a thread trying to warn people and pointing out the rip off so others don't fall for it.
btw bombhugger the charity is War Child there full annual report is available as PDF download from their site www.warchild.org/
WAR CHILD AIMS
War Child was founded upon a fundamental goal: to advance the cause of peace through investing hope in the lives of children caught up in the horrors of war.
As you read this, over 30 wars and conflicts rage around the world. Some fill our TV screens with appalling images of distress, emphasising warโs brutalising effect on man.
Many of these wars go unreported, often due to political expediency or lack of interest. They reveal a shaming pattern: Sixty million people have been killed in wars during the 20th Century. Over 80% of war casualties are now civilians - mainly women and children.
Children are amongst the first casualties of any armed conflict, always the most vulnerable and innocent of victims. In the last decade alone 1.5 million children have died in wars. Four million have been disabled and a further 10 million traumatised.
The severe psychological wounds that war inflicts on children can scar them for life, crippling the very generations that must one day rebuild their devastated countries. For the future peace of the world we must do everything in our power to help these war children.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by tomhills1 on May 26, 2007 16:57:45 GMT 1, get out of bed the wrong side BH or just a bad hangover? maybe your big issue seller has a criminal record, is homeless or perhaps both illiterate and innumerate so really selling the big issue is about the sum total of his employment capabilties?
you're making assumptions the same way those who do give to charity assume their money is doing at least some good.
i agree to some extent, all your generic telethon shindigs are subject to "expenses", so someone is having a free lunch on your donation. though to catogorise all charites and those that make a living raising money for them , as futile and self-aggrandising is just a little pathetic really.
i hope you never have to rely on a charity - local hospices, homeless charities, the samaritans all do work with people going through extremely hard times who have nowhere and no-one else to turn to. people who are in situations i hope none of us or our loved ones have to endure. it is a fact of life though that inevitably some of us will and at these times the work of charities is invaluble.
as for middle-class guilt, i'm a roofer who grew up in a single parent house, on a council estate. i'm now a homeowner with a family and a successful career which is in no small part thanks to a number of charities. so i would be thankful if you would stop taking such a f*cking arrogant, small-minded, ill-considered standpoint when describing the work of charities and all they do for people.
count yourself fortunate, i do.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by insite on May 26, 2007 17:06:03 GMT 1, Bombhugger, your analogy doesn't stand up. Although the Big Issue itself may be a charity sellers have too buy their copies and make a "living" from the margin they get on top. Big Issue sellers are therefore not charity cases but are supporting themselves and if anything would be classed as self employed, unlike the charity muggers that work for an agency and refuse too discuss how much needs too be raised every hour before the charity gets anything.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by corblimeylimey on May 26, 2007 17:14:48 GMT 1, Known as Chuggers apparently.
I had a mate who once sold raffle tickets in aid of a charity, it really was a bit of a rip off, it turned out that it wasn't a charity but they gave some of their profits to charity, it wasn't long before he realised the full story felt very guilty and stopped doing it.

If you think that the "Homeless" main problems lies with not having a home or job.. you're very wrong mate. Root of their problem's usually is the "home".. let's hope none of their experiences are visited on you anytime soon hey.
And you buys Banksy's ? Fucking laughable BH.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by stuey09 on May 26, 2007 17:23:42 GMT 1, Due to previous employment I ended up going out to Africa in order to conduct some humanitarian work after a particularly nasty civil war. Mixed feelings on some charities as a result. Too many hoorays buzzing around in 4 wheels 'organising' workers, then going back to their comparitavely grand accommodation to spend the evening quoffing imported lager. However, on balance, the money that is donated to charity can make a difference, depending on the organisation and destination. Sadly a lot of aid that goes to Africa ends up in the hands of militias which perversley helps to maintain their war effort. Local charities, however, tend to be more succesful.
Just an opinion, but it's based on experience all the same.

Andipa Catalogues Rip Off..., by tomhills1 on May 26, 2007 17:32:48 GMT 1, I read the Independent and think BoombHugger is spot on and entitled to his view.
he's entitled to his opinion and knowing BH he was probably just trying to throw the cat amongst the pigeons (he thinks it's funny). it has however opened up an interesting debate and one that stuey has pointed out is in certain circumstances a flawed process.
when charities are multi-national and have vast support perhaps a little complacency creeps in and with that maybe too much bureaucracy. my point was that it is a little too easy to point to trans-global charitable mistakes and class all charities as failing.
the vast majority of charities work and work well for the people they were set up to help. perhaps those that feel differently would like to detail their personal experiences of appalling failures by a particular charity rather than third-hand, at best, journalism?
