"There are many artists in the urban / street art movement. For this show, each artist was selected based on his or her unique voice and ability to push the boundaries of the genre, while remaining true to its origins." - Bumblebee
Carmichael Gallery is pleased to present My Turn, the first curatorial project by Los Angeles-based artist, Bumblebee. The group exhibition includes mixed media collage, sculpture and works on canvas and paper by Bumblebee, Hyuro, Interesni Kazki, Jaz, Klone, LineLineDot, Moneyless, Penny, Stinkfish and Zeus, ten artists whose work activates creative conversations with the geographically disparate cities of Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Downey, Kiev, London, Los Angeles, Milan and Tel Aviv.
About the Artists:
Bumblebee
Click carmichaelgallery.com/available/bumblebeeavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Bumblebee’s work first came to life on the streets and abandoned buildings of Downey, a city located in southeast Los Angeles County. With a focus on themes of innocence, communication and coming of age, his stencil and sculptural works are most often rendered in the simple, but instantly identifiable color palette of yellow and black. Ongoing campaigns range from the remodeling of urban furniture such as abandoned phone kiosks and newspaper boxes to large-scale mural projects that address and work to raise awareness of issues such as youth homelessness.
Bumblebee has exhibited his work in group exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Mark Moore Gallery, Thinkspace Gallery (who also included him in their curated exhibitions at Together Gallery and London Miles Gallery), LeBasse Projects and the Portsmouth Museum of Art. Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include tasj magazine, Ekosystem, TEDxBloomington, The Downey Patriot, Unurth, SlamxHype, Arrested Motion, PSFK, The Dirt Floor, Vandalog, GOOD, Wooster Collective, My Modern Met, Sour Harvest, Daily du Jour and The Daily Portsmouth. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Hyuro

"Una vida sin cuestionamientos, no es digna de ser vivida. (A life without questioning is not worth living.)"
Buenos Aires-born painter Hyuro once asserted in an interview with graffiti and street art blog, FatCap. The weight of this statement rings with particular strength upon examination of the intricate, Surrealist-infused narratives and introspective themes she explores in her monochromatic murals, canvases and works on paper.
Hyuro received her BA from Escuela Nacional Manuel Belgrano, Buenos Aires and her Masters from Politecnic University, Valencia. In addition to unsolicited murals projects throughout Europe, she has participated in events and festivals such as Nuart (Stavanger), ...CAPITALISM? (Bergen), Festival Poliniza (Valencia), Primavera Valenciana (Valencia), Festival Mislata (Mislata) and Bien Urbain (Besançon). She has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Starkart, Zurich, Nice Nice Gallery, Hanover, Jonathan Levine Gallery, New York and Hollywood In Cambodia, Buenos Aires. Online and print media outlets in which she and her work have been featured include Wooster Collective, Unurth, FatCap, tasj magazine, Ekosystem, Zupi, Design You Trust, Arrested Motion, Juxtapoz, Fubiz, Vandalog, Complex, Brooklyn Street Art, Visions Paradox Magazine and The Citrus Report. She currently lives and works in Valencia.
Interesni Kazki
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/interesnikazkiavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Interesni Kazki, whose name translates in English to Interesting Fairytales, is a Kiev-based collective comprising artists AEC and WAONE. From large-scale collaborative murals in India, Slovakia, Spain, the Ukraine and US to individually painted works on canvas, the meticulous duo's work explodes with color, fantastical imagery and loaded symbolism, offering both humorous and deeply philosophical views on the world.
In addition to group and solo exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery and Mid-City Arts, Los Angeles, Galerie All-Over, Lyon and AvantGarden Gallery, Milan, Interesni Kazki have participated in festivals and events such as The Wynwood Walls (Miami), Walk and Talk (Azores) and Bloop Festival (Ibiza). Online and print media outlets in which they and their work have been featured include Unurth, FatCap, Street Sketchbook: Journeys, tasj magazine, The Independent, What's On Kiev, Arrested Motion, BOOOOOOOM!, It's Nice That, My Moleskine, Mural Art: Volume 2, Ekosystem, Vandalog, Walls & Frames: Fine Art From The Streets, The Day and Segodnia. They currently live and work in Kiev.
Jaz
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/jazavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Jaz first started painting in the streets of Buenos Aires in the 1990s; what began as more traditional letter-based graffiti evolved into the figurative murals he is best known for today. Inspired in part by the culture of his native Argentina and his experiences as a set designer, his pieces inside and out have become increasingly ambitious in scale and complexity, blending unconventional materials such as asphaltic paint, spray paint and petrol to create work that at first glance assumes the delicacy of a watercolor. An ongoing theme in Jaz's recent work is the abstract representation of football hooliganism, in which anthropomorphic creatures appear locked in combat, their faces often obscured by Mexican-style lucha libre wrestling masks.
Jaz studied scenography at the Instituto del Teatro Colón and painting, drawing and ceramics at IUNA (Instituto Universitario Naciónal de Arte). He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Rosario, Rosario, Hollywood in Cambodia, Buenos Aires and Causey Contemporary, New York, and participated in mural projects such as Living Walls / Primary Flight (Miami), Living Walls: The City Speaks (Atlanta) and Open Walls (Barcelona). Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include Buenos Aires Street Art, tasj magazine, Unurth, FatCap, graffitimundo, Geo Street Art and Juxtapoz. He currently lives and works in Buenos Aires.
Klone
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/kloneavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Born in Harkov, Ukraine, Klone is a master of reinvention, having defined and redefined his creative scope with bodies of work that ranged in years from black and white abstraction to earthy illustration and his current stark watercolor works on paper. Perhaps the artist describes his evolution best himself, however, when he says, "My work is dealing with memories, my own and the ones I manage to collect in everyday life from surroundings, if it's my childhood in USSR or the coming to Israel, if it's the layers of the city, walls crumbling apart and graffiti covering and being covered, people getting old and the new generations appearing every moment. The search is endless, thus my work of documenting it is still long. I learn a new language that invents itself along the way."
Klone has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions at Speak Easy, Tel Aviv, Fresh Paint Art Fair, Tel Aviv, GO Gallery, Amsterdam, Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Anno Domini Gallery, San Jose, Helenbeck Gallery, Nice, Inoperable Gallery, Vienna and Urban Angel, London, amongst others. He has also participated in a number of site-specific installation projects in Tel Aviv. Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include tasj magazine, Unurth, Vandalog, FatCap, Israel Street Art, Urban Art Core and Ekosystem. He currently lives and works in Tel Aviv.
LineLineDot
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/linelinedotavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Californian artist LineLineDot's work was born from his search for a new truth in graffiti. Observing the art form to be a conceived illusion in public space, he investigated the qualities of these stylized letters and simplified them to the lines and dots they really are. He deliberately places these shapes on surfaces he appreciates for their unique visual qualities, creating compositions that both interact with their respective surfaces and act as an indicator to the public of the beauty and structural dynamism he perceives within urban environments. He continues this Formalist conversation to an even greater degree of abstraction in his works on canvas.
LineLineDot is currently studying at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. He has exhibited with Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles. Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include Unurth, Sticky Shadows, Melrose and Fairfax, Vandalog and Ekosystem. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Moneyless
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/moneylessavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Moneyless explores and exploits dimension and geometry to create compelling minimalist works on paper and conceptual yarn sculptures. Perhaps best known for this latter of work, often referred to as yarn bombing, the Italian artist has traveled around the word installing these complex, often large works in both secluded and heavily trafficked locations. The precision that characterizes these sculptures echoes that of Moneyless' smaller scale graphite and ink pieces, which provoke color and angle to induce new layers within the two-dimensional format.
Moneyless studied multimedia at Accademia Carrara, Bergamo and completed a postgraduate degree in Communication Design at Isia (Istituto statale di livello universitario), Florence. He has exhibited his work in group exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles and White Walls, San Francisco, amongst others, and participated in events such as Fame Festival (Grottaglie) and Bien Urbain (Besançon). Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include Unurth, Graffuturism, Vandalog, Coroa Magazine, Urban Art Core, Rebel:Art, Arrested Motion and Ekosystem. He currently lives and works in Milan.
Penny
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/pennyavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Penny brings his highly technical, intricately detailed hand-cut stencils to life with the application of an idiosyncratic color palette. He regards the complex, lengthy process of stencil cutting as being as important as the final piece and his methodology greatly informs his work. Penny uses his art to examine themes such as the juxtaposition of the industrial with the organic, playing with scale, the subtle subversion of reality and the creation of narrative within the inanimate. His provocative style translates equally well to canvas and street.
Penny studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and Central Saint Martins, London. He has exhibited his work in exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, AAK Gallery and Rook & Raven, London, Intoxicated Demons and ATM Gallery, Berlin, amongst others, and participated in The Cans Festival, London. He has also released several prints through Pictures On Walls, London. Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include Street Art News, VNA Magazine, Stencil Revolution, Vandalog and Brooklyn Street Art. He currently lives and works in London.
Stinkfish
click carmichaelgallery.com/available/stinkfishavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
Stinkfish first began making stencils in 2000; between then and the middle of the decade, his work became increasingly complex, evolving into the flamboyantly hued portraiture he is known for today. The subjects of these stenciled pieces are most often young children and exude a youthful punk rock spirit of discontent, mingled with a transfixing celebration of humanity and cultural pride. Inspiration for this body of work is drawn from photographs Stinkfish finds on the street, as well as the artist's own photographs of the people he encounters. Stinkfish also creates hand-drawn mixed media collage work, which involve the application of labyrinthine ink patterns to the faces pictured on vintage record covers and magazines and reference the tradition of Latin American indigenous tribal face paint and tattoo.
Stinkfish has exhibited with Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles and Brooklynite Gallery, New York and has in special events such as Memoria Canalla and the Bogotá Stencil Festival(Bogotá) and Latir Latino Peru (Lima). He has also released a print with 1xRUN. Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include FatCap, Unurth, tasj magazine, 333 Zine, Nuevo Mundo: Latin American Street Art, VNA Magazine, Bike Art: Bicycles In Art Around The World, Vandalog, Arrested Motion, Geo Street Art, Five Forever, Wooster Collective, Ekosystem and Street Art News. He currently lives and works in Bogotá.
Zeus
click www.carmichaelgallery.com/available/zeusavailablevip.shtml to see the available works.
For the past 20 years, Zeus has been drawing inspiration from urban culture to create dynamic, experimental compositions that have re-defined graffiti art. Captivated by the hip-hop scene of the 80s, he began expressing himself on the street when he was just 14, using walls, trains and open spaces as his galleries. Continually pushing the boundaries of graffiti artistry, he takes the form out of its traditional setting and into new, exciting and more legitimate places. His work today, which reflects both his formal training and background on the street, represents an innovative fusion of graffiti techniques and typography, fine art and sculpture.
Zeus studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. He has exhibited his work in exhibitions at Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, Prescription Art and Ink-d Gallery, Brighton, Collectors Contemporary, Singapore, and Urban Angel, London, amongst others, and has participated in special events such as Nuart (Stavanger), Mutate Britain and The Cans Festival II (London.) Online and print media outlets in which he and his work have been featured include Urban Art Core, NotCot, tasj magazine, Art Of The State, Unurth and Vandalog. He currently lives and works in London.
