WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by gibbin82 on Dec 9, 2011 0:14:29 GMT 1, Went to the book launch tonight and found it a little disappointing compared to last years Dran book launch at Marks and Stencils. I was fortunate to get in a little early while they were still setting up and although a few of the choice covers had already been spoken for, I had a choice on what remained (must spend a little more time when I get a list and not just scan through it, only looking where I expect things to be :. As expected the really choice covers had been already spoken for by the overnight campers ;D, this included the Dran (which was the older style one, rather than the little girl with spray can that I expect now is Berlin bound) and the really nice Shepard Fairy, that was there when they were setting up (it had been wrapped around a book ) but was not there once they opened for the book launch , I was very surprised that there was still quite a few good covers available including an excellent Jago which I should have got while I had the chance but missed it when I had earlier looked through the list of available covers, it was listed under Duncan Jago rather the Mr Jago still I think it went to good home, as did the C215. As usual the POW staff were very friendly as were the few people I spoke to, there wasn't a lot of folk around though but they were probably still on their way from the VNA party.
One thing I have picked up on from some of the comments in the thread is not everyone thinks a book cover is a suitable medium for a piece of art. I must admit I find this a little odd after seeing work on all sorts of things including cans, skate boards, oil can lids, pieces of found driftwood, fridge doors and lots more . Personally I found the book cover an ideal medium for some of the work and it was clear that some of the artists had really thought about the shape and made excellent use of it. Pictures to follow

Interesting..........but did you buy one?!
Fwiw, I am not too impressed with the whole idea. I would not really want a painting with the name of a book printed on it. But thats just imho.

That is exactly my thinking. I think the ones that looked best painted out the title.

this is why I liked Evol piece so much... it's just an image building wall, that would get framed.. and it says "walls & frames".. perfect!.. if it had some sort of graffit reference on it, I'd probably go for it.. but Im glad its now sold so it's not bothering me

TBH evol is actually one of the only covers it works with. The title just looks out of context on most.

WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by gibbin82 on Dec 9, 2011 0:56:57 GMT 1, Interesting..........but did you buy one?!
No I didn't, I had expected all of the covers I would have liked and were well priced would have already been bought by the overnighters and that was mostly the case, but if I had seen the Mr Jago on the list I would have had it (still kicking myself over that) I originally went down to get the book only with a few of the artists signatures and along with others I expected Dran would have been there being as he is now one of POWs main artists, a little doodle of his would have been nice, but in the end just got the book and no signatures, probably for twice the price they will be on Amazon in a few days. So with a couple of hundred miles worth of petrol, car parking and tube fairs it was an expensive night for not a lot!

WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by Coach on Dec 9, 2011 0:59:23 GMT 1, I would love a Dan Witz og. Especially one with birds. But I would be worried about the description of the medium. "Sticker and acrylic". What part is sticker? If it's the birds, then not so good. I would want to check this before buying. If the birds are hand painted, then peachy. (tho again, would look so much better without the book title, imo).

Couldn't be certain but I do think it was the birds that were the stickers Other that the shadows which I presume was the acrylic there was not anything else on the cover.

WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by Coach on Dec 9, 2011 1:09:05 GMT 1, It does say sticker, rather than stickers. If I was a potential buyer, I would check this first. I would not want to pay that sort of sum for stickers! Surely the birds must be handpainted for that money? But I would certainly check first!

May well be that the birds were hand painted stickers, can't be sure. But what was clear is some of the artist had really put a lot of effort into producing a real piece of unique art (the Shepard Fairy, C215, Jago and Miss Bugs were particularly stunning), where some of the artists seemed as though they didn't particularly care much at all, IMO this included Boris Hoppek (a crude image done with black marker pen on paper) and much as I admire his work Blek (surely something more than one small stencilled rat would have not been too much trouble, even a trio of rats would have been nice)

Agree on the Blek's, a bit disappointing as the Rat was so small as well ;-( Glad you like my C215... I woke up with a huge smile on my face this morning ;-)

Nobody (well not completely true as Pure Evil was there but appearing more as a spectator rather than there to sign the books, but I am sure if I had asked he would have signed my book)

WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by Suben on Dec 9, 2011 20:34:42 GMT 1, Hi everybody,
Here is a little update and useful information about the releases and sleeves:
- Sorry that I couldn't get back on the forum inquiries before, been very busy setting up the show and looking after last moment sleeves arrivals.. I did my best to reply as many emails as possible.
- On Monday I'll update the sleeves online gallery (Link below) indicating all sold sleeves, the ones for London or Berlin and new arrivals. And will also add show pics. www.subenysuben.com/exhibitions/walls-and-frames-london-berlin
- As you know there'll be more sleeves at the Berlin release since many sleeves are coming in late. Though I haven't separated 'the best ones' for Berlin.. There are great sleeves for both cities.
- The sleeves exhibition at POW will stay onsite until Thursday 15th.
- Artists featured in the book that attended the POW release: Pedro Matos, Miss Van, George Morton Clark, Will Barras and Pure Evil.
- The 'Dan Witz' hummingbirds are stickers, though he made some details on them with acrylic paint.
- Despite many sleeves have been sold there still many more available.
- All of you not living in London or Berlin: keep the faith! There will still be some great sleeves available for online purchase on the 16th. And actually some great artists will only manage to deliver after the Berlin release so expect great surprises on the online gallery after the 16th.
- The Evol was sold immediately actually, we just forgot to add the red dot until mid show..
- To 'Kimble': We received the Vitchรฉ's sleeve just 3 hours before the opening.. really nice one.

WALLS & FRAMES book launch at POW 8/12/11, by speebe on Dec 9, 2011 22:32:08 GMT 1, I bumped into Will Barras earlier at the VNA launch and headed down to see the show/book launch at POW getting drenched.
The book is a solid and handsome addition to my ever expanding collection. While at POW I managed to get Pedro, Pure Evil and Gorge Morton-Clarke to sign my book.
I was really looking forward to meeting Miss Van but missed her, which is a big regret as I've always been a big fan and fancy her a little too... Would have loved to have added her signature to my collection too.
Wish I'd hung about to make that happen... Ahh well.
Looking forward to seeing more, love the idea of the book covers and really want to see the Doze Green.

While at POW I managed to get Pedro, Pure Evil and Gorge Morton-Clarke to sign my book. I was really looking forward to meeting Miss Van but missed her, which is a big regret as [glow=red,2,300]I've always been a big fan and fancy her a little too... Would have loved to have added her signature to my collection too.[/glow]Wish I'd hung about to make that happen... Ahh well. Looking forward to seeing more, love the idea of the book covers and really want to see the Doze Green. I bet you would ;D

The suben site is going to be selling any that are left over, not sure when though
