Maybe they would do better if they were treating potential customers decently instead of driving them away..

Then again maybe its all a big secret. Maybe im wrong but I heard that most of POWs day to day business was as a printers and not art related?

POW Closed?, by Winter on May 6, 2012 12:22:46 GMT 1, I needed to go in there about 6 weeks ago and it was appointment only. This isn't new news and when I was in there they were clearing the last show and talking about the next. POW is a strong brand so it's probably ok. A bit like Woolworths was.

Haha. Have you ever thought about how much money is generated by a single print release and then thought about how much potential profit there is in selling a ยฃ10 print for ยฃ400?
All the Christmas releases: Invader, 2x sold out Dran editions, Banksy to come... plus after market things like Pest Control. You can look up how much the pair of them are worth as of last year from directors accounts.
They won't be doing the weekly shop at Aldi or Lidl for some time thats for sure.

So ? Just because they have 2 weeks of queues, does not mean they should have the gallery open 365 days of the year. If you could save 100k a year from wages and bills, without harming your income it's a no brainer.

Have to agree with barryh, they must have giant overheads. And I doubt that a couple of shows a year and pest control sustains those costs. Im sure they are doing fine and as I said before they do a lot of other printing down there besides the bits they sell artwise. If I remember correctly this is nothing new as Ive gone down to POW in previous years and been told its appointment only. It only makes sense to cut back services during down time / prep time

POW Closed?, by iamzero on May 6, 2012 15:38:27 GMT 1, Giant overheads? From what a place in a not so popular area that runs good business from printing anyway? To open the shop upstairs with someone to man it on minumum wage would cost 100k a year, I'll take that job. Happy do be made aware of my ignorance.

Hmmmm, think you may have an oversimplified view of the world amigo or its maybe because you've never lived in London. The location on commercial street is anything but a "not so popular" area they are in the epicentre of all things "trendy" and popular in east London right next door to Shoreditch. Im sure you may have noticed how all galleries are only a stones throw from each other. Not to mention how huge their floorspace is, the commercial letting if they dont own it will be very expensive. We're not talking about a factory in skipton (no offence to anyone from skipton). + there are quite a few people employed, you may have only seen 5 or so of the guys behind the desk but there are others not on the shop front. Oh and Im sure they dont work minimum wage considering where some of the guys live. Im not in the retail buisness but if it was as easy and cheap as you think im sure everyone here would be trying their hand at making a quick buck, but no its hard and even with their rep its expensive and requires a lot of work.
