POW Closed?, by iamzero on May 6, 2012 19:26:21 GMT 1, I'm not completely blinkered to Fancy London prices but I'm not gonna blow smoke up POW's rear quarter, The Invader and Dran prints alone in the last 6 months total about ยฃ120k without thinking of OG's and specials plus the other artists from the 12 Days period. There is no huge advertising campaign to pay for as one release mention on here and everyone's peeing in their pants to put it in their folder for a few weeks before whacking it on ebay and as stated one Banksy commission wipes out this years rent.
I resent being felt as if I know less than London folk about how the world is ran, I've gotten to know some galleries over the last couple of years and know quite well how things work. I care not if POW is open or not, I don't really like the place. From the times I've been there I have always felt as if the place was doing me a favour by letting me in when in there... Maybe just outside of the clique.
Just a thought different to yours?

Right gonna leave you with a final couple of points and then drop it. Number one Im not from London, I live in the West Midlands and was born in the North east. Have lived all over the country and I only lived in london for a few years and do not live in the bubble of M25 wonderland. The point that I was trying to make about London is that many who have not lived there dont realise how high the tariff is, it wasnt a personal thing against you. Its like weddings no-one understands the expense until they go through it, you can buy a victoria sponge from the corner shop for 99p but slap some icing and and a couple of figures on it and its wedding cake costing nearly a grand. London living is very similar.
Next you prove my point about oversimplification. Yes POW probably made little over 130k for those prints mentioned but they probably got barely 50% (the artist does have to get paid, it is his work), and lets not forget everyones friend mr taxman who defo gets his cut. Im not even going to bother getting into production cost, legal bills / contracts (which im sure artists as protective as banksy, Invader and dran will have) and the PR guys and employees.
As for OGs POW primarily deal in primary market which is not as costly as christies etc (yet again artist cut, tax etc). And most secondary sales they are only taking comission as the piece belongs to someone else. I cant keep listing the flaws because I dont normally type this much and its boring me.
Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion and you can have yours, but when its ill conceived you should be willing to take criticism.
Im done

The rent is assumed ยฃ80Kpa, the rates are likely to be around the same, then there's the salaries, the leccy (and tax).
I'd wager they have a standard tenant break clause @ 5 years and they're offski! Commercial property rents have fallen off a cliff in the last five years, the ERV is falling still and savvy tenants know this....
