How to invest £30k?, by linter on Jul 17, 2012 19:19:27 GMT 1, I would go into photography to invest, especially big names between 1930 & 1980's. Prices have been booming like crazy!
The time to buy is not when prices are booming ... unless, of course, you believe in the greater-fool theory and, furthermore, have reason to believe that you would not end up being that greater fool.

People are now understanding how photographs are important aesthetically & historically.... Hence prices have been on the rise for years & the segment is way less hyped than street art....
Difference between volatility & security...
It's not because prices are booming that it's not the bad time, you'll never know if prices keep on rising or not...
It depends on a lot of factors (risk aversion, investment timeline....).
Anyway, don't tell me that if you buy a picasso or a van gogh now, it won't be worth more in 20 years... (and prices already boomed)

How to invest £30k?, by achtungbono on Jul 18, 2012 12:22:06 GMT 1, I would humbly suggest - and I will get negged for this - to avoid 99.9% of the urban/street art that is around if you are looking at investment. Its great lo priced decorative stuff, but you have more chance of willing the Euromillions that stumbling on the next Banksy, as much has no value outside of this. The big money left the Urban art sector a while ago
As a Risk manager ( unemployed!), I woud suggest that spreading his purchases around to mitigate a collapse in a segments value would be the way forward. £30K is nothing in the real worls, so he needs to be selective as to where he spends
Maybe a Good, signed COA'd early banksy - say 5-8K
A Warhol Soup can - up to about £15K at auction for anything except the tomato
The other 10K, you should be able to get interesting stuff - I would suggest tracking down a good authticated Grosz drawing - a nude should be attainable for 3K or so. mebbes a good Hogarth, but this needs careful research as they are multiples and fakes by the hundreds.Consider good stuff from the Borough school if you have the time and effort.
My own area is Soviet propaganda art - they aint producing this any more, so a Klutsis montage poster is becoming very sought after. ditto Cuban art- this is niche at the minute, but once Casto goes and Cuba becomes another US satelite state for drugs/gambling and Girls, the stock of what remains will become hugely sought after, once the trade restrictions are lifted
Maybe an Emin - cant stand the stuff meself, but for some reason, the Guardian reading middle classes love her., though with Emin International, she has a veritable factory scale output nowadays.
Try to ensure what you buy is what you can tolerate looking at for a long time.
the rule of thumb for the small investor is to be selective and go for names, and ideally dead ones, cos they aint making any more of those. If he wanted to reserve a couple of K for low cost impulse purchases to pad out the core tranche, then it could work
I have others that I am looking at at the minute, but keepings schtum about them until I get the oens I want
good luck with this, he wont make a fortune, but he could limit his downside by the purchase of a selected portfolio.

How to invest £30k?, by achtungbono on Jul 18, 2012 14:12:03 GMT 1, the big issue is not buying what you like, but what stands the most chance of capital appreciation and stability & is tolerable to the eye
Its an uncomfortable reality that the two dont always overlap.

I like MBW and would love to have a soup can for the lols but
a) wont pay the money they go for b) am unemployed, so any buying has an investment aspect, as much as I hate to have to admit this amd as much as it degrades the idea of art n purity

How to invest £30k?, by linter on Jul 18, 2012 21:06:06 GMT 1, here's my buying logic -- 1 / I'll spend up to 1k U.S. on art that I love, even if I don't think the artist is going anywhere. Can anyone say ... Stik? 2/ $1k to $2k -- I gotta love the art and, boy oh boy, am i hoping that i'll be worth more in the future than it is now. Parla print, an original dal east, etc. 3/ over $2k: I still gotta love it, but for that kind of money, I'm counting on at least breaking even, so I'm buying only when I feel that I'm getting a bargain of some sort, ala a skyblue CWY at around 6k U.S. and the like. I could get hammered, but I'm thinking I won't be. Meanwhile, I'm loving the art. 4/ I'll take fliers on stuff that I don't really like but can't afford to pass up at the price. I recently bought a signed, fairly rare Keith Haring poster that I can't put on my wall. The drawing is of a va***a. I have nothing against vaginas. Some of my best friends are vaginas, ha ha. But I don't really want one on the wall. So, why'd I buy it? Vs aside, I love Keith Haring and the poster was cheap and i think, but don't know, that it's worth a lot more than i paid.
anyway, that's me. what about the rest of you?

How to invest £30k?, by johnnyh on Jul 23, 2012 6:12:17 GMT 1, Needs some research but he should buy one piece for that amount by an established artist. This should then just basically follow the art price index as it were. If lucky will come in above that and if not below that but as an established artist piece should maintain a consistency. So a good contemporary artist is worth looking at or as mentioned a dead one like Warhol. Eg Warhols will not shoot up but will appreciate along with general art prices. If Art prices go up most likely your Warhol will. However he must remember if he buys at auction and intends to sell at auction it's a long road before profit.
But one good piece is better than 4/5 average pieces. Likewise one nice piece by a top artist is safer than 4/5 hopefuls. Unless its a gamble speculate investment as opposed to part of his portfolio which I assume it is and that's why he is doing it

How to invest £30k?, by jaimesl on Jul 23, 2012 8:38:48 GMT 1, I've really enjoyed reading this thread - a load of good advice, from some smart people.
I am surprised though, that no-one has raised the obvious...
A set of D-Face Street Improvements!
Now I know they're super rare - and that those who have them would rather sell a child than part with them - but if you're lucky you might be able to get your hands on a set (drop me a pm ;>)
Your mate won't get change for his £30k but he'll be rolling in years to come
