Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by craigf on Sept 29, 2012 14:45:53 GMT 1, Does anyone have one gathering dust?. Ideally looking for a jail broken version 2. Alternatively what set ups do other people use to stream movies etc to their tv's. My technical abilities don't stretch much past putting a thread up on a bulletin board, but there must be an easier way than my current set up of attaching my pc directly to the tv
Have ยฃ or lots of art swaps

I just bught a smart tv (philips pfl5507) and did some research. If your tv is wifi compatible I advise you to use tversity. It is a mediaserver application which enables you to share the files on your tv, for instance the movies and music you downloaded, with your tv via your homenetwork. Its not free, but the service works very good for me. I'm not an expert in all types of files, but divx works great for me. One dissappintment was that itunes downloads are not sharable becuase of dsw or something like that. But for movies it works great!

Depending on which firmware it's running you can install a custom firmware and attach a external hard drive full of media to watch/view/listen and back up's of games IF the discs get damaged

I have a WDTV Live. The interface isn't the best but it gets the job done and it does play just about any file format unlike the apple tv.

Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by papilio on Sept 29, 2012 19:38:05 GMT 1, I was wondering if I should get an Apple TV to connect my TV to the internet, but eventually went with a Mac Mini. Unlike the Apple TV, this work as a full pc with the benefits that brings (don't need jailbreaking, anything you can watch on your pc you can watch on the TV, etc.).
But, altough I am happy with it, I find the remote to be a bit big.. Wireless mouse and keyboard.. And it is a bit more expencive than the Apple TV.

With the Mac Mini, someone that streams football online (not me obviously, that's naughty), would they be able to do this through the mini straight onto the connected tv??

Yes. I've watched three games today fullscreen on my tv, via the Mini, works like a charm. (Thats one of the reasons I got the Mini )

Completley different language to mine. No idea what any of this means. Makes me feel quite the ludite.

Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by afroken on Sept 29, 2012 23:28:19 GMT 1, Plex is just a piece of software that sits on your computer, manages all your media (regardless of what format it's in) and streams it to anywhere you have the client software installed: Phone, iPad, Google TV Apple TV or certain brands of Web TV. It finds all your media and then grabs all the descriptions, art work and subtitles from the Internet automatically. And it's dead easy to set-up and use and the client interface is very slick, particularly on iPad and the Apple TV.
The only tricky bit is that you can't install the client software on the Apple TV without jailbreaking it. You need an Apple TV 2 with the previous firmware installed (5.02) as the latest one hasn't been jail broken yet.
You can bypass that challenge and just install the client on your iPad or iPhone and then use Airplay to stream from there to your Apple TV but it degrades the quality quite a bit.
More info here:

The forums are very helpful if you have any trouble.

Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by Happy Shopper on Sept 30, 2012 8:07:03 GMT 1, I have a jail broken Apple TV (old white model), but transferring files onto it to watch is a pain in the arse. Doesn't read recent mp4 files, so I have to convert them to legacy, then FTP them to the Apple TV, then tell it to search for new files, and it often doesn't see them, so you have to find the manually. If your TV has a USB connector, just whack files onto a PC formatted drive, and plug it in! Easiest option I've found!

Thanks, the reason for thinking the apple tv was the option to go for was the additional tv channels you can allegedly get on top of the ability to streaming your own files

Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by Deleted on Oct 1, 2012 7:45:24 GMT 1, Apple TV is nice if you are the apple guy (have Iphone + Mac + Itunes account).
Otherwise, you can wait another month and preorder the new Wii called Wii U which has Wii Internet TV
As you can see, you can watch something on TV and at the same time download or preview stuff on the pad then switch everything back on TV... etc... plus there is live commenting, which is fun... just watch the vid.
I wanted to purchase the WD Live TV last Saturday but then I have decided to wait for the new Wii

Looks like Boxee, which you can get on a jail broken Apple TV... but it's not as good as it sounds in my experience. Most shows only play in US (and Nintedo TV wil be US only too), and channels you can play (like BBC iPlayer) are their web feed... so shit quality. Only thing it's actually good for is giving your stored TV Shows and Films a nice library look. With images and synopsis, etc.

Apple TV - Non Art WTB, by grafik on Oct 1, 2012 10:21:45 GMT 1, I have an apple tv 2 and a 3 also...
all my AVi files have been converted via handbrake or isquint to apple format and sit on my main server.. i can then stream music and films to either apple tv, or both at the same time.
I would swap my apple tv 2 for a 3 if someone wants one to jailbreak

aah I think yours is a bit newer/pricier than the one i was looking at - that's a pretty well specced machine...!
If I can give 1 piece of advice, its spend the ยฃ35 and get 8GB ram (you'll probably have to ditch the 2x2GB in there already.) For the cost of doing it it is really worthwhile. Crucial Memory is the place to go!
