The Observer - Solo show by Skurk (NO), by Nuart Gallery on Aug 31, 2018 17:05:20 GMT 1, Skurk WIP for the show! Always nice to see some process photos and have a closer look at the 'behind the scenes' preps for a show.
Here are a few shots of the manual work that Skurk put up for each one of his original pieces. Every single print in “The Observer” series has been hand pressed from the original woodcut. It’s a highly manual process: chop, plane, sand, burn, ink, press, conceal & sign. No computers involved.
These trees have all lived through (observed) a significant event in human history. The prints seek to capture these unique moments in time. A hand written quote has been concealed within each print, at the actual point in time the event took place. Count the rings. It will help you find your place in the larger historical context.
Due to the hand-printed nature of each piece, no two are exactly alike.
We are very much looking forward to this one. Join us next Wednesday at 19:00!

Grey Scale: The art of cutting and spraying, by Nuart Gallery on Aug 17, 2018 13:33:35 GMT 1, www.facebook.com/thenuartgallery/videos/1049571371876825/
The level of detail in ELKI's work as well as his dedication to putting art on the streets has elevated him to almost mythical status across the North East of Scotland. While we wait to see what he has in store for this year’s Nuart Festival, here is a little video for the works we currently have on display in the gallery. Have a look and/or mail sales@nuartgallery.no for interest! 🌟 .

A 42 year old poplar tree, hand painted from one of the prints coming to my first solo exhibition at Nuart Gallery next month. Looking forward to sharing more of this project in the weeks ahead!”

We are so looking forward to welcome family member and good friend Martin Whatson to Stavanger for this year's NUART FESTIVAL. Work is currently on display on our walls and available in person in the Gallery and/or on sales@nuartgallery.no!
This stencil was recently painted on a wall in Longyearbyen, on Svalbard island. Have a look at the images below and go check it out if you happen to be at the North Pole

The self-taught Iranian artist Nafir with a new pair of mirroring stencilwork
Nafir´s stencilwork embodies scenes of suffering, but are balanced by his ability to understand form and execution. His streetart subjects are often scarcely colored, as he puts an emphasis on the canvas. The canvas is as much the subject as the art itself.
For the Dead Not Living #1 and #2 Size: 90 x 75 cm Price: 11.000 NOK + 5% BKH 20.000 NOK for the pair Available at : sales@nuartgallery.no

The Observer - Solo show by Skurk (NO), by Nuart Gallery on Aug 13, 2018 16:24:58 GMT 1,
It gives us great pleasure to announce 'The Observer', a solo show by Bergen based artist Skurk (NO).
Exhibition dates: September 5th – October 6th Opening night: 05.09 at 19:00 Nuart Gallery - Salvågergata 10, Stavanger (NO)
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The Observer as a concept stems from the artist’s deep-rooted fascination with the woods and a growing desire to leave behind all the digital tools of the trade. Every single artwork is the result of a time-consuming, labour-intensive and exclusively analogue process. Within each one lies a hidden message, seamlessly blended in with the tree-rings. An observation of a time and place in history that this particular tree has lived through.
The exhibition showcases original artworks on paper as well as on canvas which are hand printed directly from the wooden source. There will also be a selection of screen prints, including a triptych of the original observers that marked the beginning of this year-long study. In addition to the visual art contributions, Skurk has also collaborated with Bergen’s sound designers to bring out the voice of the trees. The result can be heard and bought at the exhibition in the form of a beautifully crafted vinyl.
As the artists states, “The Observer is by far the most complicated and extensive project I have undertaken. I hope you enjoy the exhibition as much as I have enjoyed making it.”
We very much look forward to welcome Skurk to the Gallery!
*Disclaimer: no living trees were intentionally harmed in the making of the exhibition. The woodcuts used in the process were foraged exclusively from fallen trees from the hills and valleys of western Norway.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
ARTIST BIO
SKURK has been a fixture within the Bergen street art scene since 2013, but it wasn’t until 2016 that the artist got his international break with the mural Angler Fish at Rådalslien School. The piece, which incorporates both the connected staircase and wall lamps in its clever design, went viral after being picked up by the online street art community.
In the years since, SKURK has experimented with a variety of visual expressions while in the search of his own niche. In the artist’s own words, “Having your art recognized is a fantastic motivational boost, but what really drives me is constant self-development. Trying out new techniques and looking for unique ways of expressing myself.”
In 2017, SKURK donated the mural Piece of Mind and a cut from the accompanying print release to the charity, Psych Aid, which offered psychosocial aid to children suffering from war trauma. This piece, much like the Angler Fish before it, signaled a clear change of direction for SKURK in terms of both visual style and thematic, and has acted as stepping stone towards his current project The Observer.

Grey Scale: The art of cutting and spraying, by Nuart Gallery on Aug 7, 2018 10:47:33 GMT 1,
Introducing Malene Dekke Eik/Von Dieche (NO) who will be joining the line-up for our forthcoming show 'Grey Scale: The Art of cutting and spraying'.
Von Dieche is a Norwegian based artist working within the realm of fine art and street art. She is currently working on the series Fragments; which combines sculpture with various painting techniques and installation methods in order to explore the relationship between street art and the ‘white cube’ of the gallery space.
The creation of these fragments requires serial processes, such as stencilling and moulds, as well as traditional oil painting techniques. White plaster is used in the creation of the bricks to embody the white gallery wall, whilst their form and texture imprints the familiar urban backdrop of street art.
Depicted in here is her latest addition to Stavanger's outdoor museum! Come check out her work on Thursday, kl 19:00 or mail sales@nuartgallery.no for interest!

Grey Scale: The art of cutting and spraying, by Nuart Gallery on Jul 27, 2018 14:40:03 GMT 1, Booom! ELKI love!!!
Over the past 15 years Nuart Aberdeen artist Elki (UK) has developed a unique, photorealistic style using hand-cut stencils – no mean feat considering the number of layers required for each piece – operating out of his studio in Glasgow. Having made the move to legal walls and commissions, he has developed his work to produce some of the best stencil pieces in Europe over the past few years. Although his style and execution may have changed since those early days in Aberdeen, Elki continues to produce work with reference to numerous subcultures associated with street art, graffiti, sneaker and DJ culture with the occasional nod to Scottish heritage with the odd bit of tartan here and there!
Check out the below video and join us for the Grey Scale: the Art of Cutting and Spraying show where his work will be featured!!

Grey Scale: The art of cutting and spraying, by Nuart Gallery on Jul 25, 2018 15:55:06 GMT 1,
"GREY SCALE: THE ART OF CUTTING AND SPRAYING"
A group show of Stencil Art
Exhibition dates: August 9th – August 25th Opening night: 09.08 at 19:00 Nuart Gallery - Salvågergata 10, Stavanger (NO)
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Grey Scale surveys the most popular, authentic and democratic form of street art to emerge in recent times. Tracing its 35,000 year old lineage from pigment blown handprints across Asia and Europe to it’s use in political propaganda, decorative arts, industry, the punk movement and more latterly, the explosion of the form in contemporary Street Art practice.
Banksy’s visit to Bergen in 2000, where he decorated the venue for Tellé Records debut compilation alongside stencilling 100 Røyksopp promo album covers kick-started a Norwegian love affair with the stencil that is still inspiring artists today. It wasn’t long after Banksy’s visit that the likes of Dolk and Strøk began experimenting with the medium and produced Norway’s first contributions to an art movement and technique that would shortly after sweep the globe. Showcasing work from our roster of recognised international artists alongside pioneers and emerging Norwegian names. Grey Scale includes contributions from stencil art pioneers such as John Fekner, Blek le Rat and Banksy alongside some of the most talented emerging names today.
Artist line-up and further announcements coming soon! EVENT PAGE HERE

"DECKED OUT" An exhibition of art on skate decks, by Nuart Gallery on Jul 6, 2018 12:18:52 GMT 1,
"Fair Play" by French artist Levalet for our ongoing show 'Decked Out'! Acrylic and ink on wood and skate decks, 80 x 20 x 76 cm, unique, 2018.
Levalet often displays his works on the streets of Paris and definitely has a sense of the absurd. He fills niches in urban spaces with his black and white drawings that interact with their environment in an original and entertaining way. His figures are often hiding, climbing, peek-a-booing from some crevice in the pavement or object on the street. Sometimes sequential images are placed in an almost sitcom fashion to amuse and befuddle lucky passers by.
Levalet's humour brings to mind the wholesome cheekiness of filmmaker Jacques Tati, touching on our obsession with material goods and the stress of modern living.
Functioning like optical illusions, Levalet's art brings life to the mundane in an unexpected way. Opus Délits has published a book on his works and he is permanently exhibited in the Cabinet d'Amateur gallery.
Visit nuartgallery.no/product/fair-play/ or mail sales@nuartgallery.no for further details!
