Martin Whatson โข Still Life 2 Print, by sonmi451 on Nov 13, 2016 18:27:03 GMT 1, This is not my favorite image by him, but I really don't get the backlash toward MW. Yes, art preference is subjective, but who couldn't argue that, at the least, that his work isn't amazing eye candy?

framing Martin Whatson, by sonmi451 on Nov 8, 2016 2:32:11 GMT 1, I realize he is polarizing, so if you're not a fan, I understand; personally, I like the vibrancy of his work a lot. I have Zero Tolerance and was wondering what people thought might be the best way to frame this. The wife is tired of black or white frames, so any advice for this newb would be appreciated! http://instagr.am/p/BKBNdLCj5wB
Thanks for the response! That looks really good... but it looks like black is a no-go for our apartment... any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Damien Hirst, by sonmi451 on Sept 20, 2016 0:44:45 GMT 1, I realize I could scour the webz and this board's history to provide insight, but I was wondering if someone could explain to a new collector his appeal/historical impact? is his art polarizing? This isn't meant to sound like a loaded question, but I have certainly noticed how much his prints sell for given what I perceive to be relatively "minimalist" images.ย To get a rare inside look at Hirst's market and what has driven (manufactured) it, I highly recommend this BBC documentary. Only has the first few minutes here but I have the entire file link if anyone would like to see it. Juts PM me.
Found the documentary online... Pretty fabulous... Thanks for the tip!

Damien Hirst, by sonmi451 on Sept 19, 2016 21:46:08 GMT 1, Big fan of the Spot prints myself. I do own one and I enjoy seeing them in the variety of ways in which they have been produced. I am partial to the woodcut with deckled edges. I am personally attracted the the uniformity of shape, size, and spacing of the multi spot prints but I also enjoy the complete randomness of the colors. Even the concept of Hirsts involvement being nothing more than the final approval. I think the the torn edges and the tiny wood grain impressions / imperfections left in the ink from the wood press balance the in your face overall uniformity nicely. I also agree with Coach in when kids see it their eyes light up. Who knows if it's the symmetry or colors or just not living long enough to have been told what to like and what not to but it's the only piece on my walls that gets this type of reaction from a young age group and it's fun to see. If just for aesthetics (to me), your whatson/hirst combo looks amazing. That's yours right?

Damien Hirst, by sonmi451 on Sept 19, 2016 18:40:54 GMT 1, For the record, I dont buy Hirst because its not my thing. However, I have a gallery I deal with from time to time who does deal in Hirst and Ive had some great conversations with them. First, its not about process. The pills, the spot paintings, etc, its all concept. The pills are a critique or conversation about how commercialized mood controlling substances have impacted our lives, and taken over as a form of sustenance. The spot paintings, from what I was told, are color pattern meant to illicit an emotional response in line with the title. Its the thought, the concept, more than the execution. There is no rendering, color field, etc. I personally have no connection with the work, I get it, I just dont have an emotional or cerebral response to it. Other than to think "maybe i should become an artist" The gallery i deal with loves thats**t. To each their own. Thank you both for your responses. That color pattern thing is interesting to someone who has taken several courses on cognitive psych... somebody should experiment.

Invader LED Print, by sonmi451 on Sept 5, 2016 3:19:09 GMT 1, Strange, now they removed the 8th from her website. It just says Sept 2016 Where are you seeing this on the website? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious! J On katrin's website, the rotating picture banner on the home page shows the print black and white with September 2016 indicated... Sorry this invader thread has been hybridized!

Invader LED Print, by sonmi451 on Sept 1, 2016 16:24:24 GMT 1, Got this from today's Laz newsletter. Katrin Fridriks' upcoming print release After her successful spring solo exhibition Macrocosm, Icelandic artist Katrin Fridriks is ready to launch a new print in collaboration with Lazarides Print Studio. Thanks! I'd kill for one of her prints. Was there any date or price? I didn't receive the newsletter for some reason. Thanks! I'm a big fan as well. If you look at her website, on the front page, it says September 8th for the release!

ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by sonmi451 on Aug 25, 2016 20:09:12 GMT 1, I think this might be an appropriate question for this thread... What is a good online resource to check an artist's sales at auction or otherwise? Preferably a free resource?
