Jake & Chapman ๐ฌ๐ง Chapman Brothers โข Whitecube โข For Sale, by pezlow on Jul 7, 2010 18:39:22 GMT 1, I have an original drawing by jake and dinos chapman for sale. This was a drawing done for charity and sold to me in early 2009.
It is A5 in size and is signed by the brothers on both the front and back. The drawing is pen and ink on card.
I have full provenance for the piece namely a paypal receipt and the original envelope it was sent in together with a flier for the charity. The image is also still on the charity's website.
I'm just getting some scans together and will post them shortly.
The extreme corners of the card is slightly bent and there is a tiny crease on the bottom right hand corner. All these are barely noticeable but included for the sake of completeness.
I'm looking for ยฃ2000 ono for this. I'll donate 10% of whatever this sells for to the original charity who sold me the piece.
Cheers

Faile Ecstasy Print - June 15th, by pezlow on Jun 18, 2010 9:54:59 GMT 1, Yeah, I don't doubt that there are occasions in this bubble where a piece you buy keeps its value or even increases in value. But I would suggest that the majority of pieces bought in the last year to 18 months have not kept their value. And I think this is true for most art purchases at our levels, it's obviously different at the top end of the market.
Outside this scene prints by well known artists can be available from source for years. Clearly the print is therefore not worth what you paid for it as soon as you buy it. But it doesn't stop you buying because you want to put it on your wall and enjoy it.

Faile Ecstasy Print - June 15th, by pezlow on Jun 18, 2010 8:41:29 GMT 1, Agree Weeble,
I can't really see that buying a print for around ยฃ500-ยฃ600 is much of an investment. Sure if you are going to buy an original for 1000's then so be it but "investing" at this end of the market is pretty foolish.
Why do people buy art. Mostly to have something nice to display in their homes. I think people do genuinely realise that most of the art they buy is immediately worth less than what they pay for it. But art is a luxury purchase. And of course it is not the only type of good that you can say that about. Cars, White Goods, Technology all of that is immediately worth less than what you pay for it. It doesn't stop people buying it because it gives them utility (unlike art) or pleasure, just like art.
This scene is in a little bubble. I think a lot of people buy art created by the artists in this scene because they are addicted to the buying process, the thrill of the chase etc. If I am honest quite a few of my purchases have been like that. They don't genuinely buy to flip but once the thrill of the chase has gone they realise they have too much art to fill their walls, or they don't like the piece as much as they thought they did, or they need to fund the next purchase. So it gets moved on, often at a loss. Again I would admit to doing this as well.
As for the artists that James identified I agree that quite a few are probably better buys "investment wise" than this faile print. Maybe. But ultimately a ยฃ600 print is never going to make you big bucks whether it is by Wegman or faile.

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 31, 2010 21:18:00 GMT 1, Like I said, not fussed if you like him or not, art is a fickle thing, I just don't understand your criticism of him. There is a lot to think about what he has done, why he did it and how he did it. Not trying to convince you of anything and if you want to understand just pick up the guggenheim retrospective book and read it. Maybe you'll like it more, maybe not, but an artist for the twitter generation just doesn't make any sense to me. And your three quotes above could easily be leveled against Banksy as well.
Cheers I might well do. You are right about the quotes. I appreciate that once artists get to the top value and prices are all some people talk about.

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 31, 2010 19:55:18 GMT 1, I'm not talking for an internet forum Snausages I am talking for myself alone. I'd very happily listen to what you or anyone else has to say about Prince that may persuade me that I have been wrong about him and that there is more depth to his work than meets the eye. I have had my mind totally changed about artists in the past as people have discussed and explained his work more fully.
But mostly with Prince all I hear is words to the effect of:
"his work is worth $millions"
"he is the hottest artist of the moment"
"auction prices for him have rocketed"
Etc etc. Frankly none of that interests me nor, IMHO, gives the work much if any validation if I personally don't understand what all the fuss is about.
There are plenty of big name artists I do get and I do like. The aforementioned Richter is one and there are plenty of others. I'm just not really into Prince (nor Koons for that matter but we probably shouldn't get started on that )

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 31, 2010 19:31:25 GMT 1, no mention of his photographs? why do you choose to ignore the marlboro man and brooke shields and girlfriends, etc.?
Because I'm not writing a dissertation I was discussing things on an internet forum. But we did discuss appropriation further up, which would include the marlboro man work.
me thinks your biggest problem is that you have no appreciation of conceptual art vs. easily understandable, get it in a second type illustrations.
Maybe that shows how little you know about me. I suggest you go back and maybe look at some of the art I have posted that I own, or read any number of posts I have written from me. Alternatively you could just take it from me that you are talking crap.
And there is a delicious irony in someone having a go at me for not liking Richard Prince and saying that it is because I only appreciate get it in a second type art.
and seriously, a huge reason banksy is where he is is because of the internet. an artist like prince would be who he is and has gotten where he is with or without the internet.
I agree but ultimately who cares where an artist is or isn't and how they got there? Isn't it about what you like not who they are, how big they are and how they got there?

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 31, 2010 19:25:17 GMT 1, I don't have the audacity to think I can aesthetically rank artists of this level in any realistically objective way, so consequently I would base my choice on my subjective opinion alone. Therefore, an Ed Ruscha is worth an Ed Ruscha, and 10 Richard Princes are worth 10 Richard Princes to me.
I think this sentence shows the difference between us James. It seems like you are saying that you would buy art broadly based on other people's opinions. But ultimately your opinion of the aesthetic appeal of the piece is the only thing that matters, it should be the reason why you buy a piece.
And I think the comparisons with banksy are a little forced , I personally consider that there is often considerably more depth to banksy's work than Princes. But again that is just my opinion.

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 31, 2010 10:45:54 GMT 1, I guess he is an artist for the twitter generation as you look at his work, laugh at the joke and move on. But for me there is very little substance to it. You are talking about Banksy here right? Richard Prince will be around a while folks, get used to it. He is a huge influence on the entire young New York scene (Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, Dash Snow). And he took Warhol and Rauschenberg's use of appropriation to the next logical step, whereas koons seems to follow an Oldenberg/Johns approach, and Hirst seems to follow Richter.
I suppose you could say that about some of Banksy's work yes, but it is equally appropriate for much, not quite all, of Prince's work.
I don't dispute that Richard prince is a big name, I don't dispute that he will be around. But I'm still entitled not to think much of his work. The use of appropriation, yeah sure, but I struggle to accept on a personal level that this is much of commendation.
As I say once you get to the top of the art world it doesn't really become about the work, sadly. All the talk around Prince focuses on his prices.
I struggle with a few of the artists you mention, maybe I'm too parochial or European but a number of them just don't do it for me.

seven-emerging-artists-new-york-art-scene, by pezlow on May 30, 2010 6:29:32 GMT 1, Richard prince is an artist I really don't get. The jokes are ok, but I don't see them as groundbreaking at all and the nurse paintings do absolutely nothing for me at all. I guess he is an artist for the twitter generation as you look at his work, laugh at the joke and move on. But for me there is very little substance to it.
I can't for the life of me understand the art market at it's highest end. I would say Ruscha is worth 10 Richard Princes. But there isn't much point trying to equate artistic merit with pricing because once you get to a certain level it no longer becomes about the work but the "brand" instead.
