Your latest Art Purchase?, by pezlow on Dec 24, 2009 9:48:51 GMT 1, Pez - I'd have bet evens that Carol Robertson was a Bridget Riley!
Except she wasn't exhibiting. I knew it was by Robertson. She is an artist I have long admired and I was very pleased to get the card.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by pezlow on Dec 23, 2009 22:11:54 GMT 1, Some RCA secret postcards framed, the big ones won't be back from JJ until the new year but here are Mister Frameman's excellent frames
First my daughters two selections - Louise Edgington
Pauline Place
A couple from previous years I have had reframed
Graham Crowley
Maggi Hambling
And 2 from this year
Carol Robertson
Pierce Casey
Now to find wall space for them!

Where can I buy a LS Lowry signed print, by pezlow on Dec 21, 2009 8:31:59 GMT 1, There are loads around. In the 70's there were signed prints that you could send off for from sunday colour supplements. I think they sold thousands of signed but unlimited editions. My dad has one hanging on his wall.
Limited editions much harder to come by and much much more expensive.

Your best buy of 2009! , by pezlow on Dec 17, 2009 22:12:34 GMT 1, Probably, one member was kind enough to email me the Richter's and that's exactly what I thought to myself, "gee this is easy and I would have had a few". Still doesn't change the fact that I think the one you got is one of the 2 best for my eyes Pez, enjoy it - well done. Were there other squeegee compositions form lesser known artists to throw you off? I'm amazed that you got one of 6 and were that far back- congrats.
Yeah there were a few other abstracts that could have been but also there is just such a wealth of stuff your eyes goes funny trying to look at it all.

Your best buy of 2009! , by pezlow on Dec 17, 2009 21:56:36 GMT 1, Yep they are just over 6 x 4".
I think a lot of people may have thought the richters were overpainted photographs. It seems obvious which ones were his now but it wasn't at the time because of the diversity of work that he does.

Your best buy of 2009! , by pezlow on Dec 17, 2009 21:27:01 GMT 1, Thanks for the comments all. yes it is from RCA secret and yes it did cost ยฃ40. But that is only half of the story. I queued for 24 hours to buy it in the rain and was, despite queueing for that length of time, 72nd in the queue.
To answer Snausages question the cards are on display for a week before the sale, both in person and online, so I had plenty of opportunity to look at them all and work out which cards might be by richter etc. I should also acknowledge the help of printguru who I exchanged a couple of pms with and exchanged ideas. He gave me more confidence about the cards I thought might be by richter.
There were six cards by richter in the sale out of 2,700. By the time I got to the front of the orderly queue that was the only one that I had spotted that was left. I feel very privileged to be lucky enough to have got it and have booked an appointment with John Jones next week to give it the special framing treatment.
Some more great art on this thread. Araki is very cool. I like the polaroids. Could never put one up though.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by pezlow on Dec 17, 2009 6:55:24 GMT 1, Not massively urban but a nice addition to my collection. My daughter's particularly fond of this one. (Quentin Blake)
This was from Chris Beetles I assume? They always have some nice illustrations in that show but the framing absolutely sucks

My favourite pick up just has to be Gehard Richter
But I am also very fond of the paul benjamins I bought in the summer

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by pezlow on Dec 12, 2009 9:45:05 GMT 1, Spending one night outside in the cold for rca secret is an absolute killer and I bring hot drinks, sleeping bags, inflatable mattress etc etc. I honestly don't know how the homeless cope. It's a sobering experience indeed.

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by pezlow on Dec 12, 2009 8:01:46 GMT 1, Respect to those who have queued the night. I know how you feel having queued overnight for RCA secret for the last 9 years. It is fun for the first part of the night but the period between 1am and around 7am is absolutely miserable, especially when it is as cold as last night was. I hope you are all pleased with your prize at the end.

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by pezlow on Dec 11, 2009 22:41:15 GMT 1, Seriously shocked there are not 250 people there already. I find that very surprising and actually quite disappointing.
Why disappointing? Its pretty cold down here, there wasn't much notice.

Shepard Fairey - OBEY - Jasper Johns, by pezlow on Dec 9, 2009 22:11:30 GMT 1, Can't come into this world knowing everything pez, I'd rather admit I hadn't the faintest and go and look it up than pretend I knew all along. If Jasper Johns has never come up in conversation in my 21years, given I never went to art school or had arty family or friends, there's not much to be done about it.
As has been observed there is plenty of stuff to do about it. I suggest a little bit of reading about contemporary art will enrich your life. A good starting point is Matthew Collings This is Modern Art. Under a tenner at amazon and filled with enough starting points to make you want to go and explore the world of contemporary art even further. Stick it on your xmas list!

Shepard Fairey - OBEY - Jasper Johns, by pezlow on Dec 9, 2009 7:40:05 GMT 1, Whatever way I say this it is going to sound patronising so apologies in advance
But never heard of Jasper Johns, WTF! People need to read up on contemporary art a little bit - there is a whole world out there outside this little scene. Johns is one of the foremost US painters of the 20th Century.

RCA Secret 2009 dates announced, by pezlow on Nov 22, 2009 21:46:09 GMT 1, Yeah I am gonna have to give some sort of consideration to value as I need to get the richter insured. At the moment I haven't really thought about it though.

RCA Secret 2009 dates announced, by pezlow on Nov 22, 2009 21:20:07 GMT 1, Scanned my cards in tonight. Hopefully a bit more detail than the rca website
Richter
Grayson Perry
Carol Robertson
An abstract artist I have always admired and I was very pleased to get her work. However on close inspection it mostly a giclee print rather than painted, with only some handtouches. A little dissapointing but I will still frame it
And finally Pierce Casey - I like this one a lot. I had half a mind it might be Barbara Rae but really liked so am not too bothered either way:

RCA Secret 2009 dates announced, by pezlow on Nov 22, 2009 18:24:02 GMT 1, Did anybody like any of the postcards or is it just about the possible value of them?
Actually unlike this scene there is very little flipping that goes on, or indeed selling at all. Given that there are 2500+ cards released onto the market each year very very few of them hit ebay. Last year there were about 10 sold immediately after the sale. That's about 0.3% of the total cards sold by the college that year. Moreover everyone I know who queues regularly has most, if not all, of their cards framed and up on the wall.
So no it isn't about value for most people.
Although I did have a comment reported to me overheard by someone in the exhibition on friday. Woman says to the person behind the desk "But what am I supposed to do with the cards if they aren't by someone famous". Lol.
