Margaret Thatcher Art, by pezlow on Apr 14, 2013 9:26:35 GMT 1, I agree that it is senseless to glory in someone else's death. If you are left of centre you are supposed to have views that are compassionate and take into account other people's feelings. That's hardly consistent with calling a dead woman a witch and rioting in the streets of Brixton.
Then again there is nothing to stop people having an honest and frank discussion and appraisal of her life. Did she have convictions? Yes. Did I agree with those convictions? Absolutely not. Do I think the country is better off now than before her period in office? On balance no. The country was in a pretty shocking state in 1970's but this wasn't just down to the unions as the right would have us believe. Britain was broke, it was still paying off its Second World War debts and its manufacturing industry was suffering in competition to cheaper foreign alternatives. Many other European countries had similar economic problems to the UK. The labour government before thatcher definitely has to take its share of the blame for all this as it clung on to power with a tiny majority in the commons, and therefore wasn't able to pass the legislation it wished. The period when the practice of "pairing" was stopped (whomever was to blame for it) was a low point in British parliamentary democracy.
Then thatcher comes in and for the first years of her leadership is the least popular prime minister EVER. Even more unpopular than Gordon brown was. She fights a war in the Falklands and retakes power on a wave of nationalist fervour. She has a lot of luck, North Sea oil being the main one. That period in the eighties was great for the government because there was so much cash coming into the coffers - privatisation, North Sea oil, the sale of council housing stock. It's no wonder it is seen as the loads of money era.
But through it all was someone who lacked warmth, compassion and the human values I think are so important. Thatcher ushered in an era of the uncaring Conservative party. There is no such thing as society etc etc. I cannot ever agree with that.

Margaret Thatcher Art, by pezlow on Apr 8, 2013 20:09:13 GMT 1, Owning art has nothing to do with liking or disliking thatcher. It's like the fatuous arguments that vegetarians receive who wear leather shoes.
Anyone who lived through the eighties and the way that thatcher decimated communities probably isn't shedding too many tears right now. Lets not forget that thatchers cabinet basically decided to leave Liverpool to rot (as recent cabinet papers revealed). I will never forget celebrating the day she deposed from office. Then again I do accept that if Michael Foot had got into power in 1983 it would have been a disaster for the country. Thatcher was able to win 3 elections because the Labour Party self destructed in the 80's (a bit like the Tories in the early noughties).

Why do you buy art?, by pezlow on Apr 6, 2013 20:03:16 GMT 1, I'm pretty sure most people buy to have something nice on their walls. Then their walls are full but they carry on buying because it is fun, and pretty addictive. You'd have to be crazy to see it as an investment. Far too risky.

Oli Postcards , by pezlow on Apr 2, 2013 19:55:59 GMT 1, Thanks Atomone
Nice to see the enthusiasm but please no more emails asking how you can buy cards or whether you can reserve cards by a particular artist! I'll post details much closer to the time as to how the sale will work. Thanks

Oli Postcards , by pezlow on Apr 2, 2013 14:57:48 GMT 1, Yes I've been persuaded to do it all again. The Oli Bennett charitable trust will be running a secret art postcard sale that bears a passing resemblance to the RCA secret sale....
Last time we ran the sale it was a raging success, raising over ยฃ8000 and generating a lot of publicity for the charity and the artists involved.
All the postcards from that sale can still be viewed on the website www.olipostcards.com until 31st May. We had donations from, amongst many others, DFace, Sir Peter Blake, Candice Tripp, Anita Klein, Remi rough and Josie McCoy and actors Eddie Redmayne and Clemency Burton-Hill.
This time the sale will be on 21st June 2013.
If there are artists on this board who would like to donate a postcard or three then please email me your details to
olipostcards@btinternet.com
I'll will get a pack sent out to you.
Thanks for reading!

RCA Secret 2013, by pezlow on Mar 24, 2013 21:34:48 GMT 1, Gary has framed a number of mine in the past, does a good job. I've also had a few framed by John Jones, expensive but generally worth it. And some I've put in Ikea frames, they fit perfectly and look absolutely fine. John Lewis also do a decent off the shelf frame.

RCA Secret 2013, by pezlow on Mar 23, 2013 14:00:47 GMT 1, I got a card by Ron Fuller who was a contemporary of David Hockney at the rca. The card is a photo of Hockney in a waistcoat taken by Fuller. I'm very pleased with it as it is a piece of art history. I also got an Alan kitching and a Ryan Mosley. My fourth card was a beautiful painting. I had no idea who it was by when I bought it and it is by Zadie Xa, an MA fine art student.
