Banksy STREET ART, by Bill Hicks on Apr 16, 2021 20:05:52 GMT 1, It would be unfortunate if this thread were overly diluted by faux Ban ksy str eet art. At least collectively, we're able to spot and filter out such pieces. In this instance โ even leaving aside the Chichester location, poor execution and rather lame concept โ the fact we aren't in the presence of a genuine Ban ksy is evident. Because the Chichester rats are based on familiar imagery, previously created by the artist: Croydon (2019) + Paris (2018)

Bristol protests, by Bill Hicks on Mar 28, 2021 21:17:58 GMT 1, Did laying down and taking it ever bring change? Are you sure the cops dont punch first? Anyway i get where your coming from, so not much point in stating the obvious at you. Have a nice life, assuming you retain any freedom. Your false god and his lost profits already took away your freerange status. I believe that unless you provoke the police in this country they wont just come at you. If you feel an injustice about something that happened to you then i am sorry. But there would have been a reason why they took your pants down. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/bristol-protests-journalist-attacked-police-b1823553.html

Bristol protests, by Bill Hicks on Mar 27, 2021 20:54:01 GMT 1, More than 700 of the UKโs leading legal academics have signed a stinging open letter urging Johnson to ditch โdraconianโ restrictions on the freedom to demonstrate, in one of the largest protests of its kind in decades.
The signatories, who represent a significant proportion of the UKโs legal scholars and include more than 120 professors of law from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and York, warned of โan alarming extension of state control over legal assemblyโ from measures in the prime ministerโs controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
Scenes of women being forced to the ground and handcuffed while attending a vigil to murder victim Sarah Everard in south London on Saturday vividly highlighted the dangers of extending powers to control protests and public gatherings, they said.
The 300-page bill, which was rushed through its second reading in the Commons this week just days after being published, dramatically extends police powers to clamp down on protests and gives home secretary Patel the power to define the kind of โserious disruptionโ which could lead to demonstrators being arrested and prosecuted.
Under its terms, individuals could be jailed for up to 10 years for causing โserious annoyance or inconvenienceโ. Police could impose legally binding restrictions on marches or rallies on the grounds that the noise generated โmay result in serious disruption to the activities of an organisationโ or may โhave a relevant impact on persons in the vicinity of the protestโ. And unprecedented new powers could impose controls on protests by a single person.
Letter, published in The Independent, warned that such measures represent โan existential attack on the right to protestโ.
Signatories pointed to warnings from the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association that the threshold for imposing conditions on public assemblies in England and Wales is already โtoo lowโ and โdoes not reflect the strict test of necessity and proportionalityโ in international conventions.
And they expressed โalarmโ that the proposed use of so-called Henry VIII powers would allow the home secretary to alter the definition of prosecutable behaviours without parliamentary approval or scrutiny.

# WithSyria, by Bill Hicks on Feb 27, 2021 11:32:56 GMT 1, I am writing to you from the German town of Koblenz, where earlier today a former member of the Assad regime was found guilty of aiding and abetting crimes against humanity in Syria. I had mixed feelings as I heard Eyad al-Gharib's four-and-a-half year sentence, but I hope this is the first step in a process of justice and accountability that will one day lead all the way to Bashar al-Assad himself. This verdict is not only about al-Gharib as an individual, who was a relatively low-level official, or about the number of years he has been sentenced to. It is about the injustices that so many Syrian families have suffered, including my own. This trial acknowledges in detail the crimes of forced disappearance, arbitrary detention, and torture committed inside the Syrian regimeโs detention centres over the past ten years and beyond. Al-Gharib was tried under the principle of โuniversal jurisdictionโ, where individuals can be prosecuted for serious crimes against international law. Lawyers and Syrian human rights defenders have resorted to this route because a comprehensive international justice process is being blocked at the UN Security Council by Russia and China. Todayโs trial sets a precedent for other cases against the Syrian regime. In fact there are already similar cases in Norway, Sweden, and France being prepared, and another higher ranking official is still on trial here in Koblenz. On a political level it sends a clear message to European countries: that itโs not ok to build political relationships with Assad as crimes against humanity are committed under his watch. Todayโs historic verdict was made possible thanks to the hard work of Syrian lawyers and human rights defenders, as well as the bravery of Syrian victims who were witnesses and plaintiffs in the trial. Those who have told their stories, demanded justice and answers, and will continue to do so until justice is served for all of Syriaโs detainees. More than 100,000 Syrians are still detained or disappeared and the crimes documented in detail in this trial are ongoing to this day. One day, I hope we will witness the referral of Syria to the International Criminal Court. Until then, we must continue to fight for freedom and justice for Syria, and for Syriaโs detainees, wherever we can. In solidarity, Ameenah Show your solidarity with Syrian activists and share this Facebook post to mark todayโs historic verdict

TOP 10 BANKSY TAT, by Bill Hicks on Jan 26, 2021 16:13:21 GMT 1, that is a ridiculous statement lol the gdp cushions will be remembered forever. the entire gdp exhibit will. only fanboys will know about royskopp. The Royksopp covers are very well known amongst Banksy collectors. Moreover, they are hand sprayed. Making them an edition of modest originals. I find a Royksopp cover far more appealing than the cushions.

For Sama , by Bill Hicks on Dec 30, 2020 21:37:09 GMT 1, What a year it has been. A tough year filled with horror, sadness and glimpses of hope.
In February I stood on the stage at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards with my husband, daughter and dear friend to collect the best documentary award for my film, For Sama, which captures life in a hospital in Aleppo under heavy bombardment. I dedicated the award to the medics, humanitarians and White Helmets in Syria and called on the world to hear their voices.
Calling on the world to hear our voice is the daily mission of my friends at The Syria Campaign. Iโm writing to you as their partner and as a supporter of their work at the end of this unprecedented year. The ninth year of the Syrian conflict has seen some of its very worst months, it has seen COVID bring an already shattered health system to its knees and Assadโs regime brazen in its continued use of intimidation and detention as a tactic of fear and control.
As the bombs were falling on Idlib at the start of 2020, The Syria Campaign team stood with me and other organisations outside the United Nations in New York demanding an end to the bombing of hospitals. I was with them in Koblenz, Germany, when brave women from Families for Freedom took the plight of their disappeared loved ones to the worldโs first trial against Syrian state-sponsored torture in detention centres.
Iโm so grateful for the work of The Syria Campaign. This year they have continued to amplify the work of heroes in their struggle for freedom and democracy even when the rest of the world is too busy to pay attention. Wherever decisions on Syria were being made, they were there raising the alarm and demanding action - from the UN Security Council, to the World Health Organisation, the UN Human Rights Council, and capitals around the world. They have elevated the calls of families of those kidnapped by ISIS and teachers working on the frontline.
Next year marks ten years of the Syrian conflict. I know there is so much more work to be done together and I urge you to join us by donating to The Syria Campaign today.

P.S. A group of generous donors have pledged to double up to $20,000 that we raise in donations. That means that if you donate now, the impact of your donation will be doubled.
