Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by hunter007 on Feb 24, 2012 13:41:00 GMT 1, That was going to be my next question. I have previously seen names like Damien Hirst, Anthony Micallef and Takashi Murakami talked about on here as "urban artists", and I don't think that they have any connection to street art? It's quite simple. The results of the Urban Art Awards should give you some guidance: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=urbanartawards&action=display&thread=91059Urban Art includes names such as Banksy, Eine, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Invader & Blu. Street Art on the other hand, includes names such as, er, Banksy, Eine, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Invader & Blu.
spot on analysis

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by hunter007 on Feb 24, 2012 13:42:36 GMT 1, Street art is art, specifically visual art, developed in public spaces โ that is, "in the streets" โ though the term usually refers to unsanctioned art, as opposed to government sponsored initiatives. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, sculpture, stencil graffiti, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, and street installations. Typically, the term street art or the more specific post-graffiti is used to distinguish contemporary public-space artwork from territorial graffiti, vandalism, and corporate art.

Yes, well, that certainly clears things up...
However, I find it a little bit difficult to put my faith in the categorisations of these awards, since the MOCA (i.e. Museum of Contemporary Art) has been nominated and given second place to as a gallery.

How is this more specific? This term seems to suggest that all street art descends from graffiti?

The primary difference is that while one goes to an art museum to view art, one goes to an art gallery to view art, from the perspective of purchasing the art.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by pelle on Feb 24, 2012 13:53:05 GMT 1, who's marketing him as an urban artist? Laz? really?
I wouldn't think that he is being marketed that way anymore (since Laz have now shifted to the term "outsider art" anyway), but in the past I seem to remember it being so.
I could be wrong, though.

If urban/street art didn't exist, then whatever Micallef would be classed as, revert to that.
In effect, its a bit of a lazy term that is only there to satiate peoples desire to classify.
And can some add 'i don't care, 'this is pointless' and 'i know but i am not allowed to tell' to the poll above.

Sorry, I changed the font of the piece of text I wanted to highlight instead of the color. I've edited it in my original post to make clear that I was talking about the term "post-graffiti".

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by papsino on Feb 24, 2012 13:58:33 GMT 1, ok, my worthless 2c as usual... Banksy and his people should try a differnt route and not underprice this one at source... add this one to monkey parliament and morons - you've got GOLD! this whole notion of providing urban art at reduced pricing to 'fans/collectors' and to take steps to deter flipping - lollllll... street art is already on the 'street' and is free for all who walk by and see... which Banksy does a considerable, meaningful job at... (ducking under the covers now... ) reminds of a discussion i often have with buddies about the separation of church and state (the analogy may not make sense - but it's early and i don't drink coffee...)
Let him (Banksy) or them (POW) charge what they feel.
There should be no comments of people saying prices should be raised and priced at this and that.....the people who tend to say this are those who are well off enough to afford a piece at any price
TBH Banksy knows he has a big fan base. The personality he appears to have seems to be grounded. He not looking to milk everyone for his prints, he know has has a huge fan base and would like to give people he opportunity to have his work on their walls.
So he supplys the demand.... There should be no formula FFS its just a print release. If your there you have an opportunity to get one if not you wont or might have to pay more from someone else. Simple As....
As they say "You got to be IN it, to WIN it" ;D
So get your sleeping bags out, ill meet you outside POW at 1.30pm sharp

wasn't really expecting this to be sold from POW this year, but if it is, its got to be better sleeping on the street in March than a week before xmas.
Another queue jumping fiasco outside their offices though....? Part of me says POW don't give a flying fuck and the other half says maybe they will wise up and find another way to sell.
I'm in for the street though, great fun.

I personally doubt that, given last years debacle. Every man and his dog now knows (if they didn't then) there's a couple of grand for free annually in Commercial Street....
Queue for tickets for a raffle, maybe?

This year they will fork out.
But that's not for deff.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by Deleted on Feb 27, 2012 11:38:47 GMT 1, I don't think there will be a queue because it will be carnage and there's a huge difference between policing a queue for an Invader print and policing a queue for a Banksy print.
POW are a commercial operation, they'd have hated gifting the QJG edition last year, they didn't and don't need the hassle. There's a cost involved in hiring security plus any required consents? Or they might just print an open edition and release at ยฃ300 odd and see how many people ship that in??
Can't see it myself - online / raffle style methinks.
If there is a queue, I'll see everyone there with my mates from the local bike club - they are lovely blokes when you get to know them and effective debt collection agents too!

yea but they love getting people in the gallery, create a buzz/hype. all part of it & and fun.
the banksy queue is nothing compared to other queues which have caused far more problems inc stabbings. but they still carry on with further realeses.
banksy queue just needs some security and it will be fine. like the nbg queue one of the best ive experienced with no problems. everyone had a great time despite the cold. few beers and able to leave for a quick meal no problem, it was chill.
yes they dont have to do a queue, but i dont think they will immediately disregard it because of the mayhem last year.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by klyde on Feb 27, 2012 12:08:20 GMT 1, Would love to see POW keep the details under wraps and for a massive queue to form based on rumor, panic and greed.
The queue filled at first with over privileged London fan boys tapping away on their ipads discussing how great it is standing in a street, before being brushed aside by gangsters 10 minutes from the doors opening.
The moaning and fury at POW in this 10 minute window will make for some hilarious reading.
That said, the fanboys get the last laugh when POW reveal itโs an unsigned open edition for ยฃ200.
The gangsters buy dozens.
I pick one up from ebay for ยฃ60.
White box frame.
Nice.
