Re Plip Think it might be interesting if you looked a little bit deeper into what he does, what he has done in China and how he has used art and his installations to promote the development of the Chinese people and freedom. Check out his school bag piece at the front of the Kunst Musuem in Munich the history surrounding it and his involvement.
Also often lost in the media as not really understood is his promotion of and usage of traditional artisans and crafts men to produce his installations. If you notice he does a lot of ceramics they all come from jingdezhen? This produced the famous Chinese porcelain long before the Ming dynasty but most people know the Ming porcelain. Through the cultural revolution and Mao they made Mao badges and statues and cheap crap and the tourist dross and copies in general. Ai Wei Wei has a factory there where he employs and support true porcelain and ceramic artists. Hence all the sunflower seeds were individually made and hand painted. His use of wood and wood artists So without knocking Hirst you are very much mistaken in your comparrison as Ai Wei Wei uses his money when not taken by the Govt in very different ways. Not many artists if any have become architects and he has been involved in amazing structures.

Not sure if we're looking at the same work here. These are technical architectural sketches from a world class team and not a random mess. It's a bit different to photoshopped Einsteins from MBW or Hirst fodder.

on the print, i think it's more than blueprints. it's like watching great minds think. chess movements. it's beautiful just staring and imagining their thought processes.

That makes eleven Pavilions so far, our contribution is the twelfth. So many Pavilions in so many different shapes and out of so many different materials have been conceived and built that we tried instinctively to sidestep the unavoidable problem of creating an object, a concrete shape. Our path to an alternative solution involves digging down some five feet into the soil of the park until we reach the groundwater. There we dig a waterhole, a kind of well, to collect all of the London rain that falls in the area of the Pavilion. In that way we incorporate an otherwise invisible aspect of reality in the park โ the water under the ground โ into our Pavilion. As we dig down into the earth to reach the groundwater, we encounter a diversity of constructed realities such as telephone cables, remains of former foundations or backfills. Like a team of archaeologists, we identify these physical fragments as remains of the eleven Pavilions built between 2000 and 2011. Their shape varies: circular, long and narrow, dot shaped and also large, constructed hollows that have been filled in. These remnants testify to the existence of the former Pavilions and their more or less invasive intervention in the natural environment of the park.
All of these traces of former pavilions will now be revealed and reconstructed. The former foundations and footprints form a jumble of convoluted lines, like a sewing pattern. A distinctive landscape emerges which is unlike anything we could have invented; its form and shape is actually a serendipitous gift. The plastic reality of this landscape is astonishing and it is also the perfect place to sit, stand, lie down or just look and be awed. In other words, the ideal environment for continuing to do what visitors have been doing in the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions over the past eleven years. The pavilionโs interior is clad in cork โ a natural material with great haptic and olfactory qualities and the versatility to be carved, cut, shaped and formed.
On the foundations of each single Pavilion, we extrude a new structure (supports, walls, slices) as loadbearing elements for the roof of our Pavilion โ eleven supports all told, plus our own column that we can place at will, like a wild card. The roof resembles that of an archaeological site. It floats a few feet above the grass of the park, so that everyone visiting can see the water on it, its surface reflecting the infinitely varied, atmospheric skies of London. Really fun use of the space, the giant Corks, there were people just chilling in one corner while kids were jumping about on another side. The water on the top creates a mirror that reflects the gallery (and the sky obviously).
I think the print is a great way to remember it, although not a work of art in itself. I'm still tempted though as it's such a lovely thing!

with slightly different wording, that's about enough reason for me to get excited about this.. Herzog & de Meuron are huge names in architect world, Weiwei is a huge name in the art world, and Im not living on a cloud thinking I'll ever be able to get any of their really important, more iconic works.. so having a signed blueprint by these guys works good for me..
the reason I bought this, and the reason I bought a painting by Tessar Lo are totally different, but the way they make me feel comes to about the same..

Apart from the later explanations there are two video posts about the pavilion. Think looking at it most people would agree its a stunning piece of work. May be you should watch them.
I've not seen the print in the flesh but would assume and did assume that it will be beautifully put together and therefore well worth the 300 quid. So yes the artist is Ai Wei Wei deciding factor in the purchase but nothing new in that. Part of that attraction is also who he is and what he stands for. In a lot of art symbolism and the meaning is often more important than the image. Banksy as this a Banksy forum in almost all cases the message and symbolism is more important than the image.
Did I buy it because it was an affordable Ai Wei Wei yes I did. Does it look good yes and will it look better in the flesh I assume so and very happy with that.

Johnny, Iโm an architect. Iโm more than well versed in the serpentine pavilions over the years, have watched the videos above, visited the pavilion and seen the print in person.
My reason for asking my initial question to see what peopleโs opinions of the building was rather than the usual โI love itโ, โgetting it dropโ, โmissed outโ bollocks that normally populates threads. I wanted to start a discussion on an art forum which I think is fair enough - sorry if you thought I was wrong for doing so, the negative karmas Iโm getting show that some do.
I think the project is brilliant theoretically but a let-down in reality and finish. The project was about revealing the original foundations of the previous serpentines which would then be used as this years. The reality was that when they started digging they found nothing so altered their description and created a series of new โfalseโ foundations creating a false past. Taking it back to street art/Banksy as you did I guess it is like the Cargo tunnels on Rivington Street trying to restore Banksyโs early Rivington Street exhibition โ but failing and just re-painting it. The concept and reality would be flawed. I also think the premise of the serpentine is tired and dated but that is another discussion โ who could do it next year for example??

The reality was that when they started digging they found nothing so altered their description and created a series of new โfalseโ foundations creating a false past. Taking it back to street art/Banksy as you did I guess it is like the Cargo tunnels on Rivington Street trying to restore Banksyโs early Rivington Street exhibition โ but failing and just re-painting it. The concept and reality would be flawed. I also think the premise of the serpentine is tired and dated but that is another discussion โ who could do it next year for example?? I would presume that the majority of people who will be buying this from this forum will be buying for Ai Weiweiโs named that of course is fine, his work typically stands up by itself. If you are going to frame this and put it on your wall I would like to know how you would describe it to people visiting your home. theycallmesteven, You dont happen to have any jobs going do you.?

As according to them and as architects they would have had plans, drawings and concepts what they have done is adapt to what was there and incorporate some of those things and whatever cable pipes, concrete was there. So unlike Rivington they did not try to re create anything they just incorporated any thing that was there and adapted the Plan and used those foundations. I guarantee there were some sort of foundations there as there will be when this one leaves as no one would bother to dig them up when they had finnished.
Now not an Architect but do work for one of the largest exhibition companies in the world so have been involved in these types of structures. These structures always leave scars as no point taking them up. So I think that is the point they were making so not re creating anything more a case of re cyling rather than planting new ones

I would describe it exactly how it is. These are samples of the architectural plans, sketches of the Serpentine pavilion put into a print by H & M & AWW. As not sure how else you would. Good architecture and especially that which involves Ai Wei Wei always has a strong artistic concept in it. Just look at the Birds Nest and the Jinjua Architecture Parkjust stunning beautiful objects or pieces. That's what seperated him from the architects and makes his colaborations so interesting in my view.
So yes signed and sealed for me. A piece I will be very happy to have in my collection.

Thanks for this. Still looking forward to the print, hopefully they'll be signed and sent back to the gallery soon. Would have probably have been quicker though if the gallery had used some of the local Serpentine migrating geese to do the couriering.
