Whilst I have been buying art for some time I have never had the chance to visit POW Towers. I have spoken to them many times on the phone and indeed sent them Chocolates on occasions when they have gone overboard and helped me out with prints when they didn't have to.
I was one of the guys that tried for 4 hours and still missed out on the Applause print... but that doesn't make me bitter? Of Course NOT! Lets not forget we are all trying to get something that is Limited Edition, and the important word there is LIMITED. I think alot on here have forgotten that and assume that they "Deserve" a Banksy print.
I got to the Ghetto yesterday.. there was an almighty queue, full of jostling art fans some young and some, suprisingly for me, very elderly. The atmosphere was electric! There most have been 100 people just looking at the queue and shop asking "Whats in there", loads of people with their camera's and phones taking pics of Tony Blair, it was ace, you felt part of something!
Bouncers were friendly and shared a joke or two.
And then inside... f**k! Where do I start... wondered round just staring for 10 mins, got my bearings and looked at all the canvasses etc and then all the presentation folders giving me the chance to see all the POW prints in the flesh for the first time. Went out the back, watched a funny video, playing a game of hula and had a Go on the ยฃ1 Banky lottery to win an Applause.
Next I met Dora. I have spoken to her loads on the phone but never met her. We had a laugh and a joke and immediately that broke the ice. Of course she was stressed, imagine being in a shop with 100's of people asking "Where are the Eelus, Banky & Micallef prints?" one after another. But when you use a little empathy and understand her position, she was an angel and couldn't have been more helpful!
I then ordered my Stanley Donwood "Happy Families", Tittifreaks "Telegraph" and was over the moon. Whilst I waited for my prints I nipped outside to get me a coffee and Dora a Tea. On my return I met Remy from Laz.inc... what a legend, a thoroughly top guy!
Turns out POW didn't bring the Donwood print to the Ghetto so alas I collected only one ยฃ60 print. Was I unhappy after having driven for two hours to get there to be told, no Eelus or Donwood? NO.. I had a wicked day!
As a little sweetener I managed to grab the last DFace "Hate" as Dora's Cousin told me they had one so actually I was over the moon!!
Now I can buy the Donwood from the POW site and be complete!

The moral of this little tale is:[/glow]
POW owe you nothing. Banky and all the other artists owe you nothing! POW is an orgainsation making art more attainable to the masses, I had never heard of Tittifreaks, Stanley Donwood, Insect, Lucy McGlaughlin and a million others before I found out about POW.
With regards to service. Well f**k the lot of you who think it's poor. Have a little try to put yourself in the boots of the team at POW and Santa's Ghetto, once you have a little empathy you will discover how great they actually are at what they do!
Just by being nice and not hassling the staff I didn't have to rush, I was let in twice by the bouncers, Dora's cousin "found" me a print so I didn't have a wasted journey, Dora was really sweet and helped me choosea print I had overlooked.
What a post...sorry but I can't bear the knoking of POW & Sg without just deserves.

It was the best art show/shop whatever I ever been to in my life, all i'm saying is that I would of like to of had the oppotunity to buy a print from the shop like others had.
I souldn't be made to feel guilty about liking an artist and trying to buy a print that I would enjoy having on my wall, I thought thats what it was all about! PICTURES ON WALLS!!
I couldn't care less now, i'll just buy from the fat lady off ebay.

However, POW has now reached another level concerning how big a business it is. It is no longer a small concern.
They put santas ghetto on oxford street. They have massive international artists on their book's. Banksy,Hewlett and Donwood to name a few, are known worldwide.
Did they expect one man and his dog to turn up this year?
On the whole I had a great experience at Santa's ghetto and it was well worth the trip from nottingham at 6am on saturday, ;D ;D ;D queing for 90 minutes, the doors not opening  chatting to fellow art fans in the queue(if your reading this dave,hope you got the prints you were after)and getting some of the prints I wanted eventually in the chaos(I am not criticising the staff but maybe if they had tubed and numbered the prints beforehand it might have made things easier for themselves).Couldn't wait to get home on the train to pop open the tubes and look at the prints I'd bought. Tittifreaks wires is awesome ;D ;D ;D
It might be a good idea not to physically sell prints at the event? people could have a look around order what they like or what is available and then wait for them to be delivered. Then people will go just for some of the amazing art that is on display!!

I was very unsure at the time about spending ยฃ500 on a print in a frame, and the more the sales guy spoke the more he was putting me off, he was going on and on about it going up in value and it could be worth double in a years time and that he's got one more out the back and he'll be selling that for ยฃ550, lots of pressure etc. When I came home I did the research (after all I didn't even know if I had been sold a dud) I joined this forum, found out about POW and realised that Art Republic were taking the piss, if only I had known about POW before (or even looked at ebay).
Remember if it wasn't for them and their ideals it would all go straight to places like Art Republic and we'd all be worse off.
But the best thing is the whole experience has introduced me to lots of new art and artists I would have never of realised existed and thanks to POW is actually affordable, and now (thanks to this forum and numusic) have been introduced to and bought Charles Krafft. Sure POW buggered up a bit recently with the LA prints and from the sounds of it should have been a little more organised at the ghetto, I guess a lots changed over the last year, but I do hope POW doesn't change much in the future.

Then a really old lady, 70ish was inquiring about the originals (forget the name) of the animals at the back-right of the Ghetto.
It was a right mix.. and indeed a mix that felt good!

I turned upat about 4.00 pm so maybe the real rush had subsided by then. I have to say that all the staff were really helpful and friendly. O.K. It's not run like Tesco's but then the odd'antireatil approach all adds to the charm.
My only observation was that most of the prints were in 2 floor standing lecturns and there was a big crowd of people around each, so no time to assess a pint for too long. Nice to see some new artists there though. Love titifreak's face. Hope he gets added to the POW stable soon! Too much to take in...Did come away with 5 prints though after a surprise late delivery!

Also managed to order Titifreaks 'Face' (last one apparently) last night. What a talented chap he is!!
No complaints about SG from me. Thoroughly enjoyable plus POW are nice people :-)

Thought i would be clever and look into POW a little, iv got my wires crossed and im little confused! maybe people can shed some light on it....this is what i found www.ukdata.com/creditreports/viewCompanyDetails.do?companyId=05143539as far as i can tell this is POW - whats with the address? different to the print studio, does that mean the company is registered to a different premises, if so, what premises? also searching for the POW postcode in ukdata doesnt show any business registered as POW to that address... www.ukdata.com/creditreports/viewCompanyDetails.do?companyId=05143539Iv opened myself up a can of worms that i dont really understand, maybe someone can inform me - or maybe someone can confirm that the annual reports and such on ukdata are infact that of POW - im just nosy!! |

chatting to fellow art fans in the queue(if your reading this dave,hope you got the prints you were after)and getting some of the prints I wanted eventually in the chaos(I am not criticising the staff but maybe if they had tubed and numbered the prints beforehand it might have made things easier for themselves).Couldn't wait to get home on the train to pop open the tubes and look at the prints I'd bought. Tittifreaks wires is awesome ;D ;D ;D
