New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Coach on Jan 8, 2013 22:54:31 GMT 1, Unmissable show for those of us the Midlands.
the Herbert Art gallery in Coventry
"Caught in the Crossfire - Artistic Responses to Conflict, Peace and Reconciliation"
25th Jan to 7th July.
"Caught in the Crossfire explores how artists grapple with both the brutality of war and the desire for peace.
The exhibition takes us on a challenging journey from the home front to the frontline and back again, as seen through the eyes of artists, soldiers and people affected by conflict. Visitors will travel through divided lands, debate the role of protest art, explore the aesthetics of violence and machinery of war, and reflect upon the aftermath of war where hope emerges and lives are rebuilt. A section of the exhibition focuses on the work of kennardphillipps made in response to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. On show will be historical works alongside pieces by contemporary artists, featuring: Terry Atkinson, Banksy, Barnbrook Design, Bob Barron, Ian Berry, Blek Le Rat, Muirhead Bone, Iftikhar Dadi, Nancy Davenport, Anthony Davies, Thomas Galler, Ori Gersht, Bita Ghezelayagh, Siobhรกn Hapaska, Peter Howson, Al Johnson, Ross Jones, Rosie Kay Dance Company, John Keane, Peter Kennard, Kennardphillipps, Eric Kennington, Laura Knight, Langlands & Bell, Nalini Malani, Raymond Mason, Locky Morris, Simon Norfolk, Cornelia Parker, Michael Peel, Jamal Penjweny, Matthew Picton, John Piper, William Roberts, Paul Seawright, Graham Sutherland, War Boutique."

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by tomega on Jan 9, 2013 1:14:24 GMT 1, I concur, great heads up. Great mix of superb artists as well. The fact that will be much more than a pictorial depiction and considers the opinions of others means should make for a very interesting art event. I just love it when something good is happening on the door step - no trains, or a long day out just to catch an exhibition in The Smoke.

I agree. This should be very interesting, and hopefully hard hitting at times.
I am looking forward to seeing what War Boutique has in this show. Like what I have seen by him so far. I have two Met peace badges, that I love (one signed thanks to AP - cheers fella!). This is what I did with them, after nicking some of my lads pink spray paint for the background.

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Feral Things on Jan 9, 2013 23:24:32 GMT 1, I think this is shaping up to be a really interesting show. The diverse range of artists should give a whole range of perspectives on the subject. At one end of the spectrum you've got people like Banksy who was involved in the anti-war protests and Brian Haw and at the other end of the spectrum you've got people like Graham Sutherland who I think was an official war artist during the Second World War.

Yes, mostly painting bombed out buildings and war torn landscapes, from what I've seen so far.
There should also be some hope in this exhibition, as part of the theme is reconciliation.

I have a War boutique T-shirt with a patch I would be happy to listen to offers on, It's never been worn or washed only out of the bag to look at it !

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Deleted on Jan 9, 2013 23:58:32 GMT 1, Thank god!For a minute I thought a discussion about art was going to break out.
(WB has been criminally under rated by most, summed up by discussion of a patch created and then used by banksy in his museum show some 3 * years ago.
Here's a young artist trying new mediums with a worthwhile narrative, I just hope he garners enough popularity to continue wl well away from the urban art arena)

Perhaps a little harsh on the criticisms DD. I would like to have been able to post a picture of one of WB's brilliant pieces, but I don't own one - not sure why you object to me posting a picture of the Met badge, that I do have. Maybe start a thread about what you want to talk about? You do seem to really dislike this forum.....

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Deleted on Jan 10, 2013 0:33:41 GMT 1, No I don't hate I just try to fire up some discussion and a little honesty.
It's utterly fine to show the patch, it's just dated, and then becomes about buying and selling which is just so what this place has become. But I'm grateful you've at least answered me back.

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Coach on Jan 10, 2013 0:47:36 GMT 1, Fair enough. It was never my intention that this thread should have anything to do with selling. It was supposed to be about what might be a very good show, that I wanted others to know about. It's actually refreshing to me that this type of show doesn't have print releases and the like. It means the show is just about the art. And in this case, given the subject matter of the show, that could be quite powerful. I will always be honest.

I hadn't seen the patch before. I'm new. But I'm learning all the time.

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Coach on Jan 24, 2013 23:56:15 GMT 1, Went to the PV of this, this evening. PV's are very different in big art galleries, compared to PV's at the type of galleries that most of us usually go to - speeches etc! Was hoping to meet War Boutique, but needed to get away quite early. Shame. The show is good - worth a visit if you are in the area. Few banksy prints - was pleasantly suprised to find a Bomb Huger canvas there - beautiful too. Loved the large War Boutique piece - The Great game - stunning. The Kennard pieces were fantastic - three of them huge - like 20 feet accross or so. Have admired his work for a while, but seeing them in person has made me really want to see more. The medal pieces were especially gorgeous (perhaps not the right word, in the circumstances - but the were fantastic).
I managed to pick up a few show flyers (bit more than a flyer - more like a small pamphlet). If anyone wants one, pm your address, and I will post it out to you.
Also managed to pick up 1 spare A4 book/pamphlet - about 20 pages or so - really quite nice - agaoin, pm address if you want it - but only have 1 spare.
I took a few pics - dont think photos were allowed - will post them tomorrow once sorted getting them from iphone to pc (need son's help with that).

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Deleted on Jan 26, 2013 0:12:09 GMT 1, Coach, sorry to have missed you last night. What a great show, some amazing pieces with a good diverse mix of different mediums from paintings, prints, videos and sculptures through to textiles. Well done to The Herbert for being brave and bold enough to show such a body of work when most large institutions have shied away from this subject matter.

Agreed - its a good gallery, with some very good shows. This one was special. I'll post the few crappy iphone pics I took - not many.
I had hoped to meet you WB. Wanted to get you to sign a flyer for my lad - he has something of a collection going. But by the time we got into the exhibition, it was getting late, and I needed to get home. Next time I hope.
Love The Great Game! quality.

New Show @ The Herbert "Caught in the Crossfire", by Coach on Jan 26, 2013 13:20:10 GMT 1, I think its worth mentioning that I think its important that this exhibition took place in Coventry. Coventry was dessimated by fire bombs during the second world war, and is now a city of peace and reconciliation.
There was a very interesting piece by an artist whose name escapes me, which were two large portrails of the city of coventry and of Dresdon. Buildings were represented by small loops of paper, and on each, there were little burn holes where bombs fell. very haunting.
