I thought "AP" meant "artist's proof" i.e. a proof copy of a print, something for the artist to approve the edition, which would mean it was the same as the full edition rather than something different. If I were trying to check that I was happy with the red on my print, I wouldn't be too convinced if the red were in fact black. Am I confused? Yeah, that is what their original purpose was however now they're just a chance for an artist to sell a slightly different colourway of a smaller edition for a massively inflated price.
I think also the artist asks to have a few different colourways printed as proofs, then would choose which one they prefered to be released for the full print run
