I am sorry to have hurt your gallery pride Castle Gallery, but I hate to see this type of WTB, and while I never mentioned that before, this time I got pissed because they are looking for the same stuff I do. I think it is an unfair business model to buy cheap from private and reselling to other private collectors who get advantage of just because they do not know the existence of this forum.

Moreover in the past they tried to buy my bomb hugger for 2.3k while on their website they have it for 3k!!!

As I said, I am putting down my opinion, can be naive or not, but it is my opinion. I do not believe I know it all, but I do believe in what I said.

There are several parts to my comment:

1) Buying cheap from forum members to flip it to outsiders is not a very respectable way of doing business. It is my opinion, fair. All the requests that come as WTB from "undisclosed" galleries as missurbanite are very likely triggered by requests from other collectors. So why selling to them instead of selling to the end-user directly?

2) just for the fact that she is not disclosing that she is representing a gallery, she deserved the threads to be hijacked. Again this is my opinion. This is something I respect in the way you conduct your business: you are upfront about what you do. That is why I do not understand why you were defending her, she is damaging you as well. Coming to a forum trying to buy cheap without disclosing to be a gallery is ruining the seller's market here and the buyers' price outside. It is a no-win for everybody except for missurbanite. I think many experienced this frustration judging by the way flippers are addressed in the various FS threads. This pisses me off more than seeing a private buyer reselling right after release.

3) In my specific case, you can check my previous posts: I am much much more a buyer than a seller, and I would have sold the bomb hugger for less than 1.9k as well because in the end this is not my job. What pissed me off is she telling me that my price was too high and then seeing her flipping it at 1k more. This is the key point.

I respected your opinion and I did not get personal with you Castle Gallery (I even gave you a smiling face to show I was not being harsh/impolite with you), please do the same. I am a "serious" collector because as you said you do, I am here for the passion not for the $.

you actually make some very good points here d, my apologies for being so harsh and quick to jump the gun, sometimes things dont read the way theyre meant or maybe i just took it wrong. You obviously have passion for art i read thro' some of your posts and i do agree galleries should be open about who they are, some collectors prefer to sell to other collectors and i respect that. I really wasnt defending her/him i was just suggesting start your own thread. From some of my earlier posts will show you my views on galleries lowballing and hiding behind identities, also selling works they dont have access to.

To be fair to dueuomo he DID start his own LF Thread, he actually even created it twice ! Both time shouting loud and clear how much he was ready to pay for the artworks he's after (credit to him).

That being said, may I dare (politely) to suggest that you make one small mistake here, it's to believe that "galleries come here to buy cheap" and resell high / flip it for profit later on. I personally believe the time has long gone when they could actually BUY CHEAP here. Forumites know current prices and if they don't they can ask for genuine advices here... that leaves less and less room for free lunches.

When it comes to DRAN (might be different for a less sought after artist) I certainly wouldn't sell my ILY cheap, neither to a gallery nor to anybody (as ultimately I'd want to keep it) and I'm sure you've come to realize I'm not the only one in that position as the $4500 you were offering didn't seem to be enough (hence your understandable frustration). In different circumstances you might have found one cheaper than that, now just doesn't seem the easiest timing for buyers as everybody is expecting great things from the artist's next move... most certainly in a much higher price bracket ;-(

Last point, I also disagree on your view that galleries shouldn't be able to sell higher than they bought here, at the end of the day, if they can do so it's because somebody is happy/willing to be on the other side of the trade. It means THEY have a client that the rest of us don't have, who is happy to pay for the service they've offered (whether it's an advice or to source an artworks), nothing wrong with that business model ;-)

Any way, enough with my lecture, I certainly have NO intention to annoy you. There's no doubt you're passionate and trying to build a tasteful collection. You were more open here than most and I'm sorry it was not enough to secure the DRAN pieces you're after, that so many other forumites failed to source before you (bear that in mind). Patience is key, it took me more than 2 1/2 years to eventually buy my first Banksy original and believe me there was also a lot of frustration in between ;-)

However, I do agree with you that it would be fairer for galleries to operate here under their real nature (credit to Castle Gallery NI for doing so) rather than hidden behind identities. Didn't know about missurbanite/Hang up, now I do. That being said, nothing wrong with Hang Up, they do a very good/useful job. I sold my Invaded Scream print THANKS TO them, on consignment, having failed to sell it here (was offered for some time here, cheaper, and didn't sell). Hence I was VERY HAPPY to pay the very fair commission they were charging me ! See my point above ? They found a client (for me) that I would never have found on my own...

Peace and again good luck in your hunt. Something will eventually come your way, you've just picked one of the most difficult artist (DRAN) so have to realize it's a bit of a different game than the rest of the artists you bought ;-)

Night night ;-) That being said, if you found "some" ILY at $4500 then you shouldn't be too worry about missurbanite / Hang-up looking for one as well (on behalf of one of their clients). Once you've picked up the best one, there will still be some left-overs for them then... all good in a great world ;-)
