Artists that have "grown" on you?, by Deleted on Feb 13, 2013 19:06:44 GMT 1, Just wondering if any of you started out disliking the work of a particular artist, then began to come around and like (maybe even - love) their work now. How did the change happen?

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by jettad on Feb 13, 2013 20:42:36 GMT 1, Agree with anarquee, too many. But here are my top 3: 1. Sickboy. Did not like his work at first, now I cannot get enough. 2. Imbue. I know there are a few haters here, but i am really enjoying his latest work. His print-a-day series, Butterfly Effect, and the latest Corporate Identity (Di$ney) ones. 3. Bast as well. I am still looking for a trade for one.

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by cra66 on Feb 13, 2013 21:13:03 GMT 1, It took me a while before I appreciated Faile's work. Some of their images stuck with me and when I got my first Faile, I was hooked. Now I love their work, but not as much as I love BAST!

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by kenzler on Feb 13, 2013 23:03:03 GMT 1, 1.Bast for me also. Could not get my head around his work at first. Still can't on some but then it hits you.
2. Conor Harrington is the other for me. There was one piece from his last shoe that I loved. Also helps following on twitter etc and understanding the artist I suppose. Missed the boat on this one though which is a shame

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by trasbash on Feb 14, 2013 14:55:23 GMT 1, Adam neate for me. Must of been 8-10 years or so ago when I was first shown his darkheart work. What a load of rubbish I thought. For me no other artist has developed and matured as much as him. Now I look back at some his early stuff with amazement.

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by My Name is Frank on Feb 14, 2013 23:50:18 GMT 1, Jeremy deller. Deller I think deserves a mention on here for his work, it suits what this place is (was) about and to be fair does far more than anyone in street art is doing in terms of connecting people with the world and the communities they live in, which was sort of the point once I think, maybe.

Artists that have "grown" on you?, by adewilliams on Feb 15, 2013 10:25:55 GMT 1, Greyson Perry and not because I didn't know how to react to a transvestite potter but because he's so articulate, hearing him talk about his work makes it impossible not to be utterly charmed by him and his art. I think the likes of Bast and Banksy hiding and letting the work speak for itself is all a bit shallow.
Billy Childish is another artist who by hearing his passion makes you see the work differently.

Swoon is the best artist in the urban category that I can think of that actually has something to say about her work that makes sense. I don't really like the flippant attitude many have.

'Well Tarquin I was looking at my original of bomb hugger and I suddenly realised Banksy had never explained it to me....well I thought...how dare he...does he not know who I am? Or care?...How shallow must he be?... I mean what evs... Totes e t**t ...'

Tarquin sounds like the sort of person that might think otherwise I'm not sure about Bast, but I don't think Banksy's work is the kind that needs explaining. In fact, if any street art needs explaining, then the artist will probably consider it a fail. Or the viewer isn't "getting it".
Of course there's "art" and there's "street art". Correct me if I'm wrong, but street art usually doesn't need a write-up or a lecture to understand it.
K.I.S.S.
Having said that, if I'm stood in a room, faced with a giant pretzel made out of human hair, and I "don't get it", if the artist wishes to explain to me how the work represents "the tidal forces at work within the feminist movement of the 20th century, while it also highlights the greed of the Disney corp", then that's all well and good, and I'll go away from there with a better understanding of the art (and artist) in question.
But I think I'm rambling now. Are these even words? I need a coffee.
Not all art is enhanced by understanding the artist's motivation or intention.

If so, I'd argue a "flippant attitude" seems rather harmless compared to stealing money from a forum member, and only returning it after being caught out by CCTV and a security guard at your workplace.
