What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by Wearology on May 11, 2013 21:05:36 GMT 1, Where is our leader? It has been WAY too long since Mr. B has released any art. The last time any of us heard anything about Sir Banksy was when POW was playing with gorilla glitter. All we hear are rumors and innuendo. I am calling upon BANKSY to come out of hiding and make some new art so we can get back to bun fights, F5ing & playing art critic. Thank you, A Concerned Forum Member

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by Warm Gun on May 11, 2013 23:18:48 GMT 1, To be honest I'm personally not that bothered. The scene is rapidly evolving and has changed direction a lot in the last three years. Artists like phlegm, Aryz and Blu have taken things to new levels in my opinion. To my cynical tired eyes, a black and white stencil piece placed down the side of a dingy canal somewhere almost pails into insignificance when compared to the epic, fantastical, vivid, colourful and imaginative murals that some artists are producing on a grand scale these days. Art has moved on, Banksy has moved on, he's certainly no longer a leader. There are plenty of great artists out there producing excellent works that have a far higher degree of skill and execution than Banksy ever managed at his peak. It's a shame but unless you're in the POW VIP club then you probably won't see another new Banksy print for a very long time, not that that matters too much as DOLK is currently out Banksying Banksy, according to some. He also probably got sick of people calling him Mr B?

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by Deleted on May 12, 2013 8:34:32 GMT 1, I agree with WG, IMO. he is past it now and certainly not in the same league skillwise as some others, add to that he is probably around 50 odd now so probably cant "sneak" anywhere for too long as he will be slower and will also need to pee every hour or so.
PS. What is a "Mewp"?.

I couldn't disagree more:
I don't see many where the placement of a piece is as important as the work itself.
I see little humour.
I see hardly any with a message.
I see none with all of the above even with a boatload of different paints and endless time and equipment.
Dolk had promise up until his quality control department went AWOL.

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by leumasdarnley on May 12, 2013 11:44:21 GMT 1, Street Art ≠ Art on The Street
IMO Banksy perhaps has grown tired of the hate. Everyone one at the top of anything becomes a target and perhaps Mr. B. is seeing if he is actually missed or just his prints being flipped are missed. I miss you Mr. B even if I have been critical in the past it was only because we became spoiled by your witty works. I agree with statements that a cherry picker with an artist and a permit is not the same as a street artist putting up his/her work in perfect placement under fear of arrest. Come back Mr. B.

Theres a huge difference in what your trying to compare, BANKsy sneeks out in the middle of the night to spray illegally and the others spend 30 legal hours up on a mewp. That's my point, attitudes are changing, local councils are opening their eyes to street art. It's now being accepted, welcomed and commissioned, just look at how many street art shows are popping up all over the country and the interest they generate. I mean for Gawds sake, the most conservative town that I know has just held a street art festival (Chichester, west sussex) And don't be so naïve to think that a 50 year old codger sneaks out in the middle of the night and sprays his own work, he gets his pals to do it and has for a long long time, it's well documented.
Banksy can no longer be bothered, perhaps he's tired of the whole scene and the blood suckers that dominate it. By all accounts he's enjoying life in the US with a young family. He'll get one of his mates to spray one of his stencils for some publicity when he needs more nappies or when his kids start school. The VIP elect will get offered the print version.

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by letiss on May 12, 2013 14:05:27 GMT 1, Since I've been following the scene, it has changed a fair bit and I've got to agree in the main with Hunter's comments about artists with "endless time and equipment". That certainly made me think of Shep's trip to London a few months back, where the murals were there really to hype the show rather than a means in their own right. Give me a Banksy with some cutting social commentary any day over some trite Obey paste-up.
Isn't it the case that walls in many hotspots like Shoreditch are 'brokered' by agents and I wonder if this has led to a lack of spontaneity compared to years ago when artists just went out and did their thing?

You can only see so many black and white stencils that contain a pun until you become blasé with them. This new breed of street work seems to capture the imagination of more people, it can only be good for the scene. I could never knock Banksy, it's because of him that I became interested in this scene which has in tern opened my eyes to other types of art. I think that may be the case with lots of members here.

True, but at the time, rumour had it on some art sites that Banksy had 'brokered' some spots in the US when he was out there promoting the release of his film. If it's true then what's the difference? Like I pointed out before, according to his arty mates, Banksy doesn't even do his own street art anyway and hasn't for some time.

From your pov; my eyes have always found repetition powerful which is the Warhol effect I suppose.
>>>Banksy doesn't even do his own street art anyway and hasn't for some time.<<
I have no knowledge to refute or support this statement but most of his work carries a recognizable hand with its execution. His few interviews seem to suggest otherwise too. It seems to me that if it were that easy to teach others that there would be far more convincing fakes out there but that is simply not the case. By and large the copycats are easy to spot better than 90% of the time, no? In the grand scheme it doesn't matter but I'm skeptical of that claim.

I love the message behind it - how the "do-gooders" on their high horse have no idea what they are really doing
(maybe not everyone got the news items - some french boy-scouts removed some ancient cave paintings thinking they were graffiti)

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by Deleted on Aug 17, 2013 9:43:33 GMT 1, The most technically excellent piece of work can leave me cold, the simplest can move me deeply. This is neither of those things, but, for me, carves the most perfect of lines ... it is ART through & through this would make a dope print. There is quite a few banksy images on the walls that would have made great prints.
The most technically excellent piece of work can leave me cold, the simplest can move me deeply. This is neither of those things, but, for me, carves the most perfect of lines ... it is ART through & through this would make a dope print. There is quite a few banksy images on the walls that would have made great prints.

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by freakinstyle on Aug 19, 2013 11:13:15 GMT 1, I sometimes cycle through Cheshire and spot cars I have never seen before, until I spotted a Mclaren dealership. Bit done with cars now, would still love to see Corcket and Tubbs in a Testarossa, but that might never happen. I will be around to experience it, but I think I prefer to move to spotting road kill. Amazing stuff!

What The Hell Happened To BANKSY?, by iamzero on Aug 25, 2013 8:23:23 GMT 1, There's not a single artist that releases prints that people rave about on this forum that could even remotely be compared to Banksy. Dolk, Whatson. Etc.. They spray paint through holes in paper and that where the similarity ends. Message wise I think Mau Mau comes the closest but still not Banksy. And as for the theory that Banksy doesn't do his own stuff anymore, if this is the case how come now its been so quiet why haven't these minions been creating pieces of their own behind the silent ones back?
