If there wasn't so many flippers surely you might have been more lucky to of paid the standard price rather than double ... I know there will alway be flippers but at least what eelus has done has cut the numbers down a bit so the people that really want them on the wall have a better chance !

Eelus โข After The Rain Print, by Someones Brain on Jul 1, 2013 9:47:22 GMT 1, The idea was brought forward earlier in this thread with regard to the immense amount of flipping of this print, but I didn't find an answer: Why do so few artists consider a timed edition (you know: accept orders for an hour, a day, a weekend - whatever - and then print the number of prints that were ordered)?
It would make (instant) flipping almost impossible. Whoever likes the image and wants a print for his/her wall or collection would get one. The only reason I could think of (despite the printing work needed to conclude a successful drop) is, that many artist might be afraid to sell less prints than through an hyped release attracting lots of flippers. But I cannot imagine that this fear would be justified with regard to artists like Phlegm and Eelus (BTW, I missed both of their last drops and I'm not paying Ebay prices).
Any answers?

But I cannot imagine that this fear would be justified with regard to artists like Phlegm and Eelus (BTW, I missed both of their last drops and I'm not paying Ebay prices). Any answers? That's true, but doesn't answer my question. So when is a print limited? Edition of 10, 100, 175, 350, 500, ... when does it end? Or does limited just mean that demand has to be bigger than supply? And most important with regard to the topic of flipping: Is being "limited" a value for itself that justifies the acceptance of flipping as a consequence of releasing a print?
BTW, I also collect gigposters (sporadically) and an edition of 500 or 750 ist still considered to be limited in that area of (screen)print making. In fact, some of my most valuable (personal and monetary) gigposters have editions of 450 to 750, one even of 2000.

Eelus โข After The Rain Print, by Dr Plip on Jul 1, 2013 10:45:04 GMT 1, It's all relative. Depending on the subject matter, it's not unusual to see "Limited Editions" of other (non print) items with runs of 10,000, 50,000, or even higher.
With the population of the planet, and the potential for the artist to acquire more fans as time goes by, I don't think it'd be unreasonable to make larger runs or open editions. But the artist probably doesn't want the hassle of dragging out sales, and it's easier to get one big cash hit and move onto the next item. Plus "Limited Editions" sell like hot cakes. Open editions sell like..............well, not so hot cakes.
I'm not being pedantic, but everything is limited. Even open editions. They have to stop making them someday. And it does happen that some open editions sell fewer than the limited runs, because nobody rushes to buy them before they sell out.
You make a limited edition print. That's fine. But a better description is probably something like "A numbered, limited edition print".
How large an edition do you think would satiate the fans? Not picking on Eelus (who I love), but take away the flippers, galleries, resellers and dealers. How many fans do you think he has worldwide, that are willing to pay a couple of hundred pounds for one of his prints?
And while I'm here, I hate the word "collectable" being used to describe something. Usually by a seller. Everything's collectable. If you can collect it, it's collectable. My bookshelf collects dust. Doesn't mean the dust is worth anything.
Oh, and rare. Don't get me started on "rare". How many times do you see something described as rare, yet there's always at least one to be found on eBay. Or it's just a call to a gallery away. So many things are described as rare, when they're not rare. Just expensive. It's rare if you're poor, if that's what you mean.
Anyway, I'm off to eat biscuits.
