Dolk Still Rising , by letiss on Jun 26, 2013 23:20:35 GMT 1, I know I'm probably in the minority but I find Dolks work as boring as hell. Either 3rd rate student type stuff, or images where I have no idea of the message (bomb suit, crown, pope with a brush, skipping pope, etc, etc...) With you on this. I made an exception with "bombsuit" as I'd watched hurtlocker a few days before and bought it on a whim, even though I don't remember any gifts being exploded. Most Dolks don't have that punchline that might be political or otherwise that Banksy does and that's a big part of why Banksy is an international household name and Dolk is in the main only known to us forum types.

Either 3rd rate student type stuff, or images where I have no idea of the message (bomb suit, crown, pope with a brush, skipping pope, etc, etc...) I'm with you happyshopper. How people on this thread can even compare Dolk's work to Banksy's amazes me. One has developed and evolved as an artist whilst never losing their sharp, observational wit, whilst the other keeps on producing meaningless, poorly constructed ideas with no real message before turning them into a print to generate profit. The day Dolk does something as innovative as The Village Pet Store & Charcoal Grill is the day I stop lambasting him.....
Some of Banksys stuff is clever I'll grant you but then Rude Copper? - it's a Policeman swearing, CYW? - a chav with a dog. Kate Moss? - erm well its Kate Moss. Am I missing something as I see no sharp observational wit in these.
I like some of his stuff and some of it is quite clever so I see no point in getting into a Banksy/Dolk debate as it gets a bit boring. I guess i just don't understand why certain (not all) Banksy fans get their knickers in a twist when it comes to Dolk. This thread started out by someone posting details of an upcoming show and some people have used it to have a go.
Pointless.

Dolk Still Rising , by Wearology on Jun 27, 2013 0:56:45 GMT 1, This forum has a rich history of hyping up artists for various reasons. I can think of some artists over the past few years like Charming Baker, Lister, Micalief & Penny who had their 15 minutes. What other artists can you guys remember that had their day in the sun here?

Dolk Still Rising , by mmmike on Jun 27, 2013 2:20:24 GMT 1, Renta, MBW and Dolk are the big ones with very little substance but lots of hype.
You could also include JR based on the sky high jump in the cost of his originals but I'm not sure any sell in the secondary market anywhere close to his primary prices.
As far as dealers are concerned I think Laz is the king of hiking prices way above what the market will actually take.

Dolk Still Rising , by Gentle Mental on Jun 27, 2013 3:25:47 GMT 1, warhol was a lot of hype....so was picasso...so's brainwash.
every piece of weak work is diluting the "fire" (if there ever was one to speak of) of the artist, on the other hand, every piece sold, is re-inforcing the beliefs of the invested.
Faith testing is a strange, slippery beast.
talent, skills, originality, integrity do help, but they're not main criteria for fame and fortune.
"Wall friendliness", timing and strategy are way more crucial.
For every dolk, there are thousands out there who are way more talented, but made less in a month than what one of his print would fetch on ebay, just look at the under ยฃ50 thread.

Dolk Still Rising , by stvro22 on Jun 27, 2013 3:46:37 GMT 1, I do like most of Dolk's work but I think threads like these are constantly started on here by his hype machine. Not saying he's directly involved but every other week it seems there's a new thread about Teddy Riot, The 5 Best Dolk Prints or some other made up reason to start these debates. It's pretty obvious that some effort is being made by a handful of people to keep mentioning his name. But hey if people buy into it and purchase his work then more power to him I guess.

This thread started out by someone posting details of an upcoming show and some people have used it to have a go. Pointless. Banksy has always been inspired by socio-political events and has consistently used reference points from other artists in his work. Taking Peter Kennard's "Haywain with Cruise Missiles" as the inspiration for the early vandalised oils, the 21st century English take on Warhol with Kate and Soupcans and the reference to Keith Haring with Choose Your Weapon (even down to the red dots used on the hand-finished editions, which was taken directly from Haring), his attention to detail is meticulous.
I have no issue with Dolk and there are actually a few images like Burger King and Che that still make me smile. However, on a personal level I find a lot of his recent work dull and uninspiring and what does irritate me is that like Mr Brainwash he appears to have no quality control when it comes to releasing prints for the masses. There are many street images and originals that Banksy has done over the years that would have made great prints, yet he has only selected a small number to release (granted, Donuts certainly wouldn't have been my choice to mark the Bristol Museum show but there you go). Dolk on the other hand just keeps churning them out every month as a commercial machine and the ones over the last few months like Evolution and Pope are just lazy ideas, poorly executed.

Dolk Still Rising , by Warm Gun on Jun 27, 2013 9:58:01 GMT 1, I'm interested to know why gravity1 started this thread in the first place (a post detailing a conversation he'd had with two people who told him that Dolk canvases are now fetching ยฃ30 grand.....yeah, that's right, two blokes [probably down the pub] told him Dolk canvases are fetching thirty thousand pounds a pop, and yes, Gravity1 does happen to own one). I'm also interested to know why he chose to delete his posts. Hopefully he'll re-enter the discussion.

Dolk Still Rising , by Happy Shopper on Jun 27, 2013 10:00:34 GMT 1, I know I'm probably in the minority but I find Dolks work as boring as hell. Either 3rd rate student type stuff, or images where I have no idea of the message (bomb suit, crown, pope with a brush, skipping pope, etc, etc...) ok so give me a top 5 banksy prints and top five dolk prints May i make suggestion... Banksy have a chance to loose this competicion Hmmm, I'm not sure what you're getting at exactly here. Even if I name my 5 worst Banksy prints they'd still be better than my top 5 Dolk prints (If I could even name 5)... but it's all in the eye of the beholder... IMO !
Just to give balance, I do actually like Dolk's outdoor work. I just don't understand the message in the majority of his prints.

As far as I can see, this thread was started by someone posting about Dolk's alleged sky-rocketing prices, and on the back of this claim speculating about the possible "deals" to be had at an upcoming show (if you are among the lucky, "select few"):
I spoke to two sources this week who just took delivery of Dolk canvases and the asking prices have been following suit to his prints, or at least the prints in demand. One oversize canvas was listed at just over $30k! I know D is now working on a home town show for Sept where there will be some great stuff, new and old and hopefully will be a small "eye in the storm" that a select few can get originals before this upward surge continues. If you have one of his originals I'd say hold tight but to be honest I have not seen a Dolk canvas for sale on this forum, dealers aside, since I joined.

Ahh yes I forgot about the red dots - yes that makes all the difference then.....to the chav with a dog.
This has become a pointless thread now with the 'Banksys better than Dolk' mob jumping in and putting the boot in. If you like Banksy then great, I like Banksy but I also like Dolk.
I guess we've all been sucked in by the hype be it Dolk or Banksy. I wouldn't pay ยฃ2000 for an unsigned print but each to their own.

Working his way up with a different style to his predecessors. A style that adopted the core basics of boxing but added new sensational moves and displays of cunning and vigour which made him the king of his profession, a real rip snorter, catapulting him to become, some say ,the best the sport has seen and possibly the best known sportsman on planet earthโฆโฆ.we had Blek and along came Banksyโฆโฆcatching my drift.
Dolk to me is Floyd โ The Money โMayweatherโฆโฆbut without the undefeated record.. some of his stuff is ok though, his PR people have been as cunning as a Dunny Ratโฆ.and I reckon his wallet is as full as a Bishops B+ll Bag !! Aww who gives a F+ck..Good On Ya !!

Dolk Still Rising , by Warm Gun on Jun 27, 2013 11:49:21 GMT 1, This thread started out by someone posting details of an upcoming show and some people have used it to have a go. Pointless. As far as I can see, this thread was started by someone posting about Dolk's alleged sky-rocketing prices, and on the back of this claim speculating about the possible "deals" to be had at an upcoming show (if you are among the lucky, "select few"): I spoke to two sources this week who just took delivery of Dolk canvases and the asking prices have been following suit to his prints, or at least the prints in demand. I have no idea how you pulled that deleted quote but I'm quite glad it's back out there for all to read. It's far from forum members just 'having a go' at someone innocently posting about a Dolk show as Amboguy suggested. It's a thread created to hype.

Dolk Still Rising , by Deleted on Jun 27, 2013 11:50:49 GMT 1, Banksy has always been inspired by socio-political events and has consistently used reference points from other artists in his work. If you paid ยฃ100 for the Bombsuit canvas, you may have a point.

Dolk Still Rising , by Deleted on Jun 27, 2013 12:03:02 GMT 1, Ok I'm bored now.
So then I'll state officially 'Banksy is the king of urban art and is much much much better than Dolk' - how's that?
My eyes have been opened and I'll never look at his print of a Copper giving the finger or a girl with a balloon again without seeing the deep socio - political implications and razor sharp wit.
Don't worry your Banksy prints won't lose any value so you can sleep safely.

Dolk Still Rising , by Petrusino on Jun 27, 2013 12:37:56 GMT 1, Banksy is an originator, Dolk it isn't, Banksy is an innovator (in the art world in general), Dolk it isn't. Banky is not just a street artist, he is The guerrilla Street Artist, Dolk it isn't. Dolk is certainly inspired by banksy, Banksy certainly was not inspired by Dolk. Dolk is however a great artist; when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie spend ยฃ1 million on Dolk we can continue this thread..

They might just be scared that Dolk might be about to "do a Banksy", and his prices will skyrocket. Nobody wants to live with the regret of having sold their print for too small a profit. Not that kind of regret.
