Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 9, 2013 23:41:41 GMT 1, Just logged on and seen the image- what a piece and how powerful a message in the context of the video and the wiki leaks vid which I hadn't seen a problem. No wonder the American military closed ranks around leaks like that. Having not been to war, I won't ever understand what happens in the heat of battlle or how personalities change to 'justify' things, but one thing is for sure, I find the conduct over the audio without a single trace of humanity. It's almost like the shooters are enjoying it rather than dispassionately performing a role. By all accounts that's not something that only Americans suffer from, but a lot of people may feel its an increasingly familiar part of America's war psyche. I personally prefer banksy style of stencil drawing, but I love this for drawing my attention to the attrocoties committed in war. A brave and bold move to do this in the heart of NYC. Hats off
The power of art! People think a little about what's happening out there and maybe just maybe digging a little deeper.
The best banksy piece in a very long time - thank you .
Look up Bradley manning, look at what the land of the free did to a man bringing to light these atrocities , think about how free we really are and pause.
Now I'm sure everyone needs to get back to that collab and getting hold of a street piece because it's a lot less confronting to think about money and possessions.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by spirit on Oct 9, 2013 23:56:43 GMT 1, This piece is incredible in person an I really think here in a bit they are going to hit it with black light to expose more to it. I think this will go down as a piece that people reference when they talk about his legacy as an artist. Very happy I was able to hang out for about an hour and take it in. How long till it gets dark over there AFR1KA?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by dreadnatty on Oct 10, 2013 0:06:20 GMT 1, The covers, for those who were asking earlier. Anyone in the city should just keep an eye out for the red Village Voice news boxes, they're all over and not that many people really grabbed at them, especially uptown where I am. Thanks mate ! Very nice, if someone could send me these 2 tu Europe I would pay the shipping fees ...can someone grab some of those newspapers there in nyc ? Cheers
Just grabbed a bunch more - gonna give some to Wearology to sort out international members and i have around 10 for US members. I have a brutally bad Post Office that i cant deal with so if you want to send me a self addressed, prepaid envelope to send back to you im more than happy. PM me if youre interested.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by randomname on Oct 10, 2013 0:15:43 GMT 1, Look up Bradley manning, look at what the land of the free did to a man bringing to light these atrocities , think about how free we really are and pause. I've been against this war from the beginning, but some people have a really distorted view on Manning. He isn't in prison for releasing this video. If that had been the extent of it, he probably would have been given a dishonorable discharge and bee sent on his way. He also released millions of classified documents not knowing or caring what they contained.
His motivation also wasn't quite as noble as people like to make it out to be. By his own admission, he did it because he was angry at the military due to issues he had with being gay or pre-op transgender (which is what I think he's calling himself now). He had been acting out repeatedly and had been disciplined. This was his way of getting back for being demoted and reprimanded.
If Manning had only released the video, it would be fair to call him a whistleblower and say his sentence is unjust. But given the fact that he handed over classified documents that he never even read, he basically got what he deserved.
That doesn't take anything away from Banksy's piece. It has nothing to do with Manning.

Thanks dude- I didn't know that side of the story. Like it was side before- it's good when u come here looking for art, but walk away with a completely different understanding of a situation.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 10, 2013 0:28:11 GMT 1, I like that someone referenced guernica to this piece as that is exactly what this feels like. Most people know the story of why Picasso painted guernica and now Banksy tackles similar issues with this piece. Not just that it is black and white and references the attrocities of war it is that the artist can have a voice. The addition of the oil barrels also adds a clear message to the agenda of war in today's world. Utilizing art to engage more than political, a humanity issue is a lost art. Not only utilizing the visual talents of the artist but also being able to create context with the audio something that Picasso couldnt do in his day. Banksy has risen for sure and reminds all us artists just how important our voice can be.
The article hairbland posted is also a great read for anyone interested in how the real graffiti artists feel about it, and as I have stated its not the top echelon of graffiti writers dissing banksy its mostly the fringe. animalnewyork.com/2013/why-is-everyone-fucking-up-banksys-nyc-work-americas-top-vandals-explain/

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by naughtyshorty on Oct 10, 2013 0:57:24 GMT 1, Good article re the tagging- just go to the home page and select art and it's about 3 down.
Some interesting reactions there - lots of points about jealousy too. My favourite quote was this one from
"New Yorkers are natural born haters!"
Made me chuckle

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 10, 2013 1:15:26 GMT 1, Look up Bradley manning, look at what the land of the free did to a man bringing to light these atrocities , think about how free we really are and pause.
Note: I didnt say he was in jail due to that video, I was raising the point about this work opening peoples eyes and questioning their reality... So perhaps looking up manning.
Also your view on this case is amazingly biased against him (perhaps just as my words were pro) ... If you think that sentence is just I despair.

What about my opinion is biased? I just looked it up and he released about 750,000 classified documents. He admitted he had no idea what was in those documents. And in his own words, he did it to get back at the military for disciplining him. Under the military code of justice, that is treason and is punishable by death.
I do have some sympathy for him, as I believe he has some serious mental issues going on. And I believe the military should have kicked him out before it got to this. But his actions justify a long prison term without a doubt.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by randomname on Oct 10, 2013 2:02:59 GMT 1, The most interesting part of this whole thing (to me anyway) is that an undercover cop participated in the attack. He smashed the rear window of the SUV, then rode off while they were beating him. Also, there were four or five off duty cops riding with the bikers and none of them did anything to stop it. If Banksy were to do a piece about it, that's the angle I would take.
