This is an unusual step from Banksy and I'm not sure quite what his motives are but at least he's keeping us on our toes.

The world trade centre buildings were not exactly iconic in architectural terms so must say not sure what he means think the new one looks much better. Although to be fair to him pretty sure there were better choices etc.
Could also be that he thought today's piece was a a bit flat so needed a bit of a spark to keep the fire burning

Wanted to write something because to be honest, i am wondering.
I am wondering about the value you all give to Banksy (not saying this guy is not a great artists, i believe that he is one which will change the street art movement for ever).
Since a week, he is everywhere (TV, radio, press) and every single piece he is doing make a huge buz online.
Owner of building spend big amount of money to protect each of his piece as a treasure and the police look after him as a big criminal. In other hand, when he try to sell his piece without people knowing that it's original banksy, people don't show such interest ... so is the value on his name only, on his images, on his political way ?
Some prints are sold now a day more than some original piece of great artists (including some famous one) with a simple COA when the chiness copy don't get much interest (they are the same without COA), make me wondering more about the value of the art ...

As usual can't really articulate what I'm thinking!
I think where I'm coming from is the article doesn't have the usual Banksy (left field) magic (if it had been published it would hav been seen as balsy tho), but it just comes across as a simple complaint that a more iconic building should have been built. And disagree NY's lost something because of this architectural decision.
If he'd done something around design by committee (faceless uneducated beurocrats making decions they have no expertise in or passion for), making our urban spaces more grey and uninspiring, I may have understood the piece more.

Anyway, as a NY'er, there has been some stunning building work done over the last 5, 10, 15 years by some of the world's best architects. The new WTC building, which might still be called Freedom Tower, is a joke amongst NYers in name (give the workers shirts with targets on the back) and is ugly as the developer is a classic bait and switch type.
But we all know with blanket generalizations - there's no good new architecture in NYC - that blanket generalizations don't actually cover that much.
Like saying everything George Michael ever did sucked (I know, hold the jokes) when the Freedom record was actually quite good.

My thoughts are that the Op-Ed and Graffiti are part and parcel of the same day's project.
And an Op-Ed piece is not a bought ad - it would be the editorial pages.

People liked the Childs building, but the landowner/developer was/is a snake, and tried a few games to up the potential insurance payment on the fallen towers. I hang with a few crowds, arty, more importantly educated...none have anything good to say about this project and at the pace this city moves in to be honest 2 weeks after the towers fell everyone was giving each other the finger again like it had never happened. My thoughts are that the Op-Ed and Graffiti are part and parcel of the same day's project. And an Op-Ed piece is not a bought ad - it would be the editorial pages. |

i read it and thought - ala some kind of manifestoish.. diatribe - it sounded .. a tad ... eh what ?
the other night it was boc without the guitar solo and ... well c'mon this needs work... coulda shoulda canned this one.. imo o course.
..dust off and move on... you've got a few days to bring us back on board B... c'mon we're still with you...!!

For me it's not a fitting memorial but that's my opinion and I don't live there, New York residents may love it? Well see what reaction it gets in the press....
Hoping for another piece like the wiki leaks installation. Best piece so far and hope this month just doesn't fizzle out.
