Seems to me that the institutions that deal with art and culture in NY do not care so much to safeguard the works of one of the greatest artists of our time...I do not think that just because it's graffiti it is right destroy. One day there will not be trace of his works on the streets. I think posterity would like be able to see a Banksy works on the streets...

What better way to show the world that one of the most significant buildings in the street art movement should be put on the National Registry of Historical Buildings and protected like George Washington's boyhood home.
IMO the developer should've sold the air rights(which is quite a bit of sq.footage being that the buildings are slated to be 41 and 47 stories tall) to TF Cornerstone(the huge development company in that basically builds everything in Hunters Point,LIC) and saved the building/make it into a 'museum' of sorts...remember it is basically across the steet from MOMA PS1...win-win for everybody

The reason I ask this question is because that is exactly what happened to me when I went to go see the 1st Banksy mural and quickly realized that the sign could be very easily removed.
My 1st thought was - I can't believe Banksy's Team didn't cement glue that sign down.
My 2nd thought was if I don't take it I am sure that it will be gone within the hour as darkness started to fall. My 3rd thought was that I have never stolen a thing in my life and why would I start now.
I guess we all learn a little bit about ourselves when we are presented with scenario's that usually just occur in our heads like what if I won the Lottery dreams.
After standing by the piece for quite some time I realized that I should be the guy who protects the sign not the profiteer who would eventually take it and try to sell it via Twitter. I was hoping that when the mural got destroyed the sign got vandalized too. In retrospect I am glad that I didn't take it but the thought of a free Banksy original on my wall does bring a smile to my face. I was curious what you guys would do if you had the opportunity to take a Banksy street piece.

Honestly went to a "The Musical" piece thinking it was not painted, but stuck on there--thinking it could be removed.
I had the same thoughts on the subway over and was utterly relieved that it was painted on. As much as I think I could do it---I think the guilt would be too much.
Although, I got super jealous when I heard the first guy took the spray sign on Allen Street.
Still no Banksy's in my possession--still saving up, dreaming.

You did the right thing both ethically and legally (I'm guessing the guy who ended up taking the Banksy Sperm Alarm piece here in London didn't imagine he'd end with a suspended prison sentence).
